Local wood for guitar body
« on: January 25, 2008, 01:11:23 PM »

Eto yung Guitar body na ginawa ko out of our native na kahoy Guijo(see attched pic). .  . marami rami narin ako nagagawa guitar bodies out of kahoy na nakikita dito sa atin. . . like yakal, narra, acacia  etc. . .

pwede mo gamitin most of Native na kahoy dito sa atin specially kung solid body ang gagawin mo. . . . lahat ng kahoy posses its own timbre pag ginawa mo body ng guitar(parang tao kanya kanya boses). . .  generally pag mabigat yung wood(hard wood talaga like guijo) solid talaga tunog and have good sustain. . . this wood and pickup combination gives a good heavy rock or metal sound when bridge pickup is used. .  also a nice twangy sound if neck pickup is swithed to single coil configuration. . (also consider kung ano gagamitin mo pickup, hardware also the paint. . syempre lahat na yan mag bubuo nung over all tonality nung guitar na gagawin mo)

Pero favorite ko Guijo. . . . solid talaga tunog and sustain . . . .  ganun din sya kabigat talaga. .

From tokai silverstar yung neck(maple) psensahan nyo na yung sobra sticker. . .  :-D
Neck is due for replacement. .  recently naka hanap ako ng carvin neck. . . post it later nalang. . .

. trabaho ko kasi travel all over luzon kaya bili ako sa isabela or pangasinan. .  size(20 X 16 X 2 inches) patuyuin ko ng nga 1 year kung minsan naarawan and ulanan. . . . then trace ko dun sa wood then cut ko ng jigsaw. .  . then shaping. . . chisel, martilyo, woodfile, sandpaper, drill, screwdriver etc. .  .

2. Yap, Gumawa na rin ako ng neck (nung wala pa ko pambili late 1980,s), out of big slab of good hardwood(guijo, my favorite wood: parang maple din sya: correct me if im wrong pls.) shape it(very very hard labor) then carefully pantayin yung magiging fretboard then decide yung gusto mo scale length nung guitar para sa sukat nung spacing ng frets, meron formula para ma compute yun, di ko maalala. .  post ko, next wik, nasa prob ung kodigo ko. . . . mga patay na cguro(joke ). . este veteran na ngayon. . .
meron ako souveneir na guitar kaya lang nasa california, its is still very nice and sound good, ,  made of narra yung body. . .  yabang. .  hehe. .

Baka tanong mo ano na ko ngayon. . .  Comm. engr. sa Transco. . . hobby ko lang making and Playing guitar. . . .  Band: "Pangas band" kasama ko si tubero. .

hikli tanong nitotela. . .  kwento na buhay  :-D

hope that helps!

Let me resurrect this thread.  :-D

Marami ako nakikitang furniture stores along the province highways. Like Tagaytay and even going to Nueva Ecija. What are the available local woods we have here?
I have stated that there are more bad sounding suhrs then there are good ones.

check my sig, all made by Max Rufo. contact number on my sig too:

the flying V has a ~3mm narra top. phil mahogany body, kamagong neck and fretboard. low middy itong guitar

the Iceman/explorer hybrid has a phil mahogany body, maple top, kamagong neck and fretboard. nice balanced tone with a bit of mid scoop. chambered din kasi tong guitar.

the tele - ash body, maple board but with a macopa neck. one of my best sounding guitars. dati may maple neck/rosewood board na nakalagay dito. nung pinapalitan ko ng macopa neck, naging brighter at punchier. maybe its the maple board or the macopa neck or combination of both, i don't know. basta mas masaya ako with the new neck.

My mom asked me the other day kung may alam din daw ba ako yungkol sa wood na yan. Don't really know much about it though.

It definitely perked my interest.  Prior to my cebu trip, I haven't heard of it.  :-)  Oh, and "banuyo" as well.

since there's just too much in the equation of good electric guitar tone, i guess using local wood would not be too much of an issue.  but in an acoustic guitar, wood is IT.

i guess most of the local woods are already mentioned above.  i can add Merbau (Ipil) - a very resonant tonewood according to my luthier in Cebu.

yep.  and more of the top and its bracing.  torres once made a guitar with paper mache back and sides to prove that the top is IT.  it was done again by an american and posted his work on the official luthiers forum.  it sounded pretty good.  but to me there's nothing prettier than a good back and side set on a great sounding guitar...

but if you look at instruments from all over, the luthiers made them from local wood.  before free trade and all they made do with what was available and i guess the yardstick was set.  i often wondered what if stardivarius only had malungay for tonewood and leo fender only had santol.  we'd probably GAS over malungay and santol guitars today

i say its ok to build with what we have locally, basta quartersawn :-D

Gusto ko sana talaga try pa custom made, kaso matagal saka mahal din aabutin. By the way, yung RJ guitars ba gawa ba locally? If local, malamang madami na sila nagawang guitars from local woods at alam na nila kung anong kahoy maganda tumunog.
