TIMEKEEPING, DYNAMICS, PROFESSIONALISM, & ETHICS

You can't be versatile without these. Being versatile can mean a lot of things on and off stage. Anyone know the guy named RINGO STARR? I believe he's not versatile enough to play jazz, latin, heavy metal, etc but he made MILLIONS of dollars drumming for The Beatles. :) Anymore case study people?

I dont agree. Kung pakikinggan mo "lahat" ng tugtog ng Beatles, Im sure you'll have doubt about what you said.
So Be It.

1. time(pocket) - sbe nga ni ZORO if your not playing time your not playing music!
2. feel/musicality - tasteful playing(ex. inde after 2 or 4 bars nag cacrash, just keep it simple but tasteful)
3. technical skills(note writing/reading, sight reading) - i think these separate man from boys. If you want to received phone calls and do session this is a must though may iba na nkkpag session pro widow lng but still those people who immerse themselves to technical stuff i think will get the BIG gigs like Vinnie, J.R. robinson, Alba, Regalado's. :-)
oh. okay.  :-D nagkakamali ako sa number 2 mo! hehe. puro crash kasi ako kahit hindi kailangan eh. hehe, but thanks for the tip!

how's that? coz one time i played in our church, then i tried to keep my mind blank. i just focused on my playing and God of course. but i still had a hard time doing drum rolls because of course one reason is that i'm not that experienced yet. and the second reason i think is that i keep telling myself that it won't sound good and i even might make a mistake during playing. and i don't want the people to lose their focus on their worship. so i just keep it simple. haha, wala lang. sharing  :-D :-D

Kailangan mo ng confidence! And, don't worry about skipping the fills! Most of the time, keeping it simple is the way to go! And the people are there to worship God anyway... Not to listen to your drum playing! Close your eyes nalang and don't mind the people. Isipin mo nalang si God sa likod ng kit ni Bozzio.

I would say it's your groove and your musicality.

Groove is somewhat undefinable but I think we all know what it means. When you get your bandmates really into the song and the audience starts moving and or at least nodding their heads in time, that's it.

Musicality I would say is when your drumming really fits and supports the song.

You can have awesome chops, know all the rudiments, can solo well, but without groove or musicality you're better off just playing alone.

hmmmmm...

second important para sa akin naman ay dynamics,a drummer should know when to hit hard or hit soft, for me dynamics is very important, lalo na sa live setting. :-D
WEEDD / brown sugar

i play drums like Ringo Starr, live my life like a rockstar, drive my car like a highway star and  i  F*#@  like a pornstar!!!

haha! ngayon lang ulit ako nakaka.OL.  :-D but you can still have good taste while studying other genres, right? because for me, di ka masyadong aasenso kapag nag.coconcentrate ka lang on one genre alone. at tsaka sobrang importante rin ang pag aral ng mga iba't ibang genres diba? :-D :-D

all those things are important.

but aren't we talking about the MOST IMPORTANT quality or trait in drumming? in other words, in your opinion, even if all those things (groove, timing, dynamics, techniques, soloing, etc.) are important, which one do you think is MOST IMPORTANT?

with good taste, everything else follows -- feel and the necessary technique to carry out whatever it is you hear in your head.

john jr robinson isn't exactly popular for his solos, speed or double bass chops, but his impeccable timing and groove made him one of the most recorded drummers in history. there's a reason why he's first on quincy jones' list.

i think most of you are familiar with michael jackson's 'rock with you'. that one bar fill that begins the song has become a part of the song that it's practically a mortal sin to change it. another thing to notice is, there are no drum fills in that song that takes away the attention from the singer, and if you tried to count how many times the crash cymbal was used, i'm betting you wouldn't even reach 5.

it seems that a lot of pinoy drummers spend too much time practicing drum solos, rather than groove. not a bad thing though. not good either. to prove this point, try to notice how our drummers seem to be better at soloing than maintaining a good groove. also, try to notice how, in drum clinics, more questions are being asked about how to make a kick-ass solo rather than how to get a great groove going. browse around this forum alone, and you'll find questions like, 'papano ba gumawa ng solo na maangas?' and it's been a very long time since the last time somebody asked how to come up with an effective rhythm or feel.

Well-said, Sir Marvin!

Whenever I check out other drummers, I wish to see and hear them lay down a great groove.  The technical stuff may be great, but I always judge a drummer's maturity and musicianship based on how he/she carries a great groove and how he/she treats the music.

I second the motion Marvin! I hope everybody keeps in mind that there's no such thing as AKO & KO in a band. But there's always a TAYO & NATIN. Example: Ok ba ang drum solo KO? Let's keep in mind that we are playing with a band and not a band playing for us. :)

so, puwede bang tanungin, "ok ba ang drum solo NAMIN?" hehe. :-D

it's my opinion that musicians, first and foremost, should serve the music, not the other way around. the music shouldn't be a vehicle for self-glorification or self-gratification. i am more impressed by a musician who shows restraint when and where it is called for...
