yes of course!  That's standard when you mount cymbals.  If your hihat clutch don't have a sleeve, you can improvise using a garden hose.  Kunin mo yung clear, choose the size that fits your hihat clutch.  That's available from hardware stores.

actually a garden hose might not be such a good idea for the hihat clutch because of its diameter. baka di na magkasya yung top hat mo o malimita yung movement.

what i use for the clutch is electrical tape. around 3 or more turns of tape should do it. downside is pag papalitan mo na may madikit na residue.

may nabasa rin ako dati na pwede yung ptfe sealant tape (plumbing tape)? haven't tried it.

sana may ibang mag bigay pa ng suggestions for the best way to do this.

kung madikit ung electric tape, why not use teflon? (the white non adhesive tape that the friendly neighborhood tubero uses) its clean, cheap and not too thick. well personally for me, I dont feel the need for a sleeve for the hihat. because 1. it would not vibrate freely as jason said :) 2. the cymbal lays 180 degrees with the hihat clutch so the possibilities of keyholing are minimal (i think) unlike on cymbal stands where the cymbal is tilted or angled there for creating gravity pressure on the hole and the stand.

just my two cents :)

Actually its a bit hard to insert it in the hihat clutch, i have to use oil for lubrication but its a very snug fit and the top hat can freely move.  One more thing, my hihat clutch has a little indentation so its diameter is a bit smaller and there are no threads on where the hihat rest.  Well, you could use other methods for this purpose but I feel that the garden hose works well for me and I think this will last longer than using the tape method.  Also, the hose is already permanent because you cannot remove it anymore unless you cut it.  I like my hihat loose, like ala Steve Smith swinging hihat or Steve Gadd and the sleeve works very well.  :-D

2 layers electrical tape, 1 layer scotch tape.

electrical tape for softness/give, scotch tape for durability (madali mashred ang electrical tape e)

@ralph
hehe baliktad tayo ako nag teflon na e, subok lang meron kasi dito sa bahay. kinapalan ko nalang since it's quite thin.

hmm may weird characteristic yung teflon e, pag electrical tape kasi napupunit din eventually kahit makapal pa (at di mo pa siya pwedeng kapalan talaga, kasi pag napupunit na siya may epekto sa hihat movement), pag teflon naman ang nangyayari "nadidiin/na-cocompres/nagiging mas compact/nasisiksik" yung tape.
parang sinasakal(?).

i'll wait and see how this holds up.

but the question is... what's the best material to use in this situation? calling all pros...
