DIY Acoustical Door
« on: August 18, 2007, 06:11:58 PM »
ok, i think natanung ko na ito dati dito.. pero di ko lang mahanap yung thread.. hehee..

anyways, im serious of building DIY acoustic door for our studio.. since nagleleak talaga yung sound doon... what i want to know is yung mga materials na kelangan ko, like yung plywood, fiberglass/rockwool ba palaman.. blanket type ba or rigid?

how thick i can go kelangan ng door, kasi diba kung makapal na sya, wala na ako doorknob na magagamit... and if you can post a plan here that i can follow...

im planning din sana yung two door... pero glass naman sya.. pero priority ko parin yung main door.. kasi naka lundo na. ehheee.

post ko floor plan ng studio ko..

thanks in advance

The thicker the better, but what you're really after is mass. Some use a hollow door and fill it with sand. But the most important factor is the seal around the gap. Even a very small gap will defeat your best efforts to create a soundproof door. The door should close against a jam all the way around, and use a rubber gasket to make it airtight. The rubber will also prevent the door from rattling.

Putting sand inside doors or walls made of wood tend to be bad after a few months or years because, as the sand settles down, they tend to sink and be concentrated in the lower part of the door leaving a gap on top.  Furthermore, because of the weight of sand, as it settles on the lower portion of the door or wall, "nag-bubuntis" which will destroy your door or wall eventually.  As the purpose of putting insulation material inside doors or walls is to prevent resonance and/or turn sound into heat energy, fibrous materials such as glass fiber, rock wall, etc. are better as they are lighter and stay in place through the years.

For doors, panel doors with insulation inside are mostly used.  Gasketing like rubber seals and refrigerator magnetic seals are also used to great success.   The problem with heavy doors is that they sag over time.  Best solution? Construct a soundlock.
