hmm, tight ka maggrip ng sticks mo ano? sa akin hindi ko na napapansin yun kasi kung minsan, kusa na umiikot yung sticks kasi loose lang paghawak ko. kapag nagshift na ako sa ride or sa crash, sadyang umiikot na yun. pero i'm not saying each hit, you rotate ok? hehehe....

I need my sticks' tips for the definition and for all those little details and nuances.  I'm not really into utilizing my sticks' butt-end.  Maybe except when I need a fatter backbeat sound, or when my drumstick tip breaks.   :-D

Try loosening your grip a bit. Use your wrists and arms when striking...

Personally, I don't grip my sticks tight. I keep them quite loose. I play matched grip, with my fore finger and thumb being the only digits gripping the stick. I let the the butt bounce inside my hand. Having a loose grip helps you with natural rebounds and especially your fast rolls, double strokes, triplets, para diddles, buzz rolls, and other rudiments too... It will help you play longer too.

Don't use just your wrists or arms only when hitting the drum. You should learn to use both.

Here's a tip... when hitting a drum, start the upstroke with your forearm (bending the elbows... not shoulders)... Then on the downstroke, snap your wrist.. This way, you get a more defined sound.

You should also practice controlling your strength when hitting. Try playing soft with a loose grip first then gradually playing louder and louder then gradually getting softer and softer then loud... soft... loud... etc etc. Also try incorporating the rudiments during this exercise. Start with single strokes... After mastering the single stroke, try double strokes... then triplets... then para diddles... para diddle diddles.. etc.etc...

Dynamics is the key to the feeling of a song...
