..mufflers are really needed for toms..

I have to disagree..tuning plays a big role in eliminating overtones as well..all the more for the snares where too much of anything may get very annoying due to its concentrated play..but all can be be neutralized with proper tuning even with out the use of rings that at times can make the heads even sound better..

..a lot of people resolve to these rings since it is the easiest way to make any drum kit rounder with out the hassle of tuning further tuning experimentation..

..but a less expensive (virtually costless) option is available like what brother Peeves suggested..try using home made dampeners such as tissue paper with tape or using duct tape..muffling rings do tend to make the heads sound too dead at times..

..but then again its all a personal preference..if you like what your hearing then go for it!

IMO, it depends kung saan mo gagamitin ... in recording or live performance, also the type of music you play, if it is reggae do you think kelangan ng o-ring or tissue? what about jazz, hard rock, blues. we have our own preference on how we can sound the toms and snares.....peace.  :-)

Branded or not, it doesn't matter.  As long as it's gonna work for you and it can produce the muffled sound that you're looking for.

Do they have different effects on the kit?

In general, mufflers are any object used to alter or deaden the sound of a drum.

O-rings, moongels, duct tapes, foam rings, Moongels...  These are all called mufflers.
