Personal crash cymbals (upgrade)
« on: February 15, 2015, 12:36:49 AM »
Magandang araw po mga fellow musicians, matagal ko na po gamit ang 16" planet z ko as my personal crash sa out of office gigs. Sa tulong po at blessings ni Lord, nakaipon na po ako and ready to buy my upgrade sa jb. Im considering A custom, k dark or k custom hybrid. Hihingi lang po ako ng inputs sa mga nakapag upgrade na, is it ok to still buy a 16 crash as my personal, or should i consider an 18 inch crash?

As advised, ok yung 18in for your needs...you can go to jb pero wag ka muna bumili until na compare mo na with the other items sa ibang stores, including those na for sale dito.

I think its less of WHAT model the cymbal is but rather determining whether that SPECIFIC cymbal sounds good to the ears.  I have spent some significant time going around locally trying out Brands of Cymbals and 80-90% of them sound like Crap.

Its NOT unusual to find cymbals of the same model sound totally different -- one much better than the other.

true, I just dont agree on the stat rate. i mean, it takes a long time to really find that super sweet cymbal. i think puro bago ang natetest mo alex sa stores kaya "crap" sounding. pero a cymbal kasi has a break-in period for me. also, what you hear in front of you does not necessarily sound the same when listened from a distance (i.e. A Custom Projection/Oriental Trash: pangit sa tenga ng drummer, pero pag audience ka, it sounds great)

Its not just the new ones I tested though...  The problem with buying a cymbal is that we tend to buy without audience participation or is just limited to you and the salesman; so as a result, we try to find a cymbal that sounds good BOTH in front of you and at a distance.

sorry for gatecrashing

ralph and alex got good points

but how do we really achieve the sound we're looking for a cymbals if we got a very limited space and poor SALESROOM ACOUSTICS especially here in the

philippines. what's the SOP in buying cymbals?

well, when i got the chance to play around in guitar center the block (orange county), they asked me to choose the cymbals set that i like then

set it up with a porta-drums to get the FEEL, then and there,

they asked me to play along with a metronome and  allowed me to smash the cymbals as hard as i can,

even my kids had a run with the kit and i heard them from a distance.
try mo kayang kalabitin baka tumunog...

I do agree with this one, and otep's points.

acoustics in local stores are bad. lalo na sa JB, tiled room so grabe ang reverb. what you might take for a nice decay on the cymbal might be the room helping out.

you can also try "channeling out" the reverb of the room, focusing just on the cymbal's sound, but that's hit or miss. It works sometimes on more focused cymbals like bright crashes and pingy rides, but will almost never work for complex cymbals like dry rides and chinas (for example my SH 16" china sounds great everywhere except where it is now)
