10" snares are generally good for high tuning. hiphop drum programmers really like shifting the pitch of their snare samples, and this is what 10" snares are trying to emulate. tuning your 12" (or larger diameters) snares very high is going to kill the sound of the snare, and is generally not good for the hardware, the shell itself and the head.
in general, 10" snares should feel at home in genres such as r&b, hiphop, drum&bass/ jungle, and 2-step, all of which use very high snare sounds. however, sidesticks are not their best features. those are still best with snares with larger diameters. or, put a groove wedge on it's rim. i have the pdp 805 10" snare as well in my studio, and the sonor 10"x 2" jungle snare (the one with tambourine jingles).
