OPM - ORIGINAL Pilipino Music
Revivals of foreign songs for me don't count as one.

Moving on, we have a lot of great music artists here.
Unfortunately, our industry (mostly) supports artists who were already in the mainstream. :-(
There were times that the front act performers were even better than the main artists.

I really hate it when somebody says "dapat pang masa".
Pero ano na ba talaga ang gusto ng MASA ngayon?
Revivals? Mga kantang double meaning? Mga songs na parang pang cheering squad? Mga kantang babagay sa mga teleserye?

BTW, wala naman akong nakikitang mali sa revivals, pero minsan kasi yung isang kanta irerevive ng ibat ibang artist in just a year or two.

Just my 2 cents.

OPM doesn't exist.

Even our own folk/ethnic music came from other countries.

Let's assume na OPM means music made by Filipino artists. Unless you want to limit yrselves to tribal music, I assume this is the running definition. Personally, I have no reason to promote OPM as "OPM" given that all music is equal. It either appeals to your tastes or it doesn't. If it's good from my standpoint, then I'll call it good and push it as good. Ang Bandang Shirley and Moscow Olympics are amazing and that's not because they're Philippine bands, that's because they are great musicians and songwriters. Just because you're geographically situated here by accident of birth, doesn't mean we're on the same page. Nakakababa rin kasi ng standards yung puro promote even if it's horrible, just because you feel it represents you. Couldn't you better represent yrself? I admit na immediately skeptical ako whenever I hear the term OPM. I'd rather not know where it's from and be pleasantly surprised when I find out a band I like happens to be a band I could see live.

you completely missed my point.  :-D

ang punto, kasi yung pagsasabi nating "Original" Pinoy Music, parang may impression na nagiging defensive agad tayo. parang ipinagdidiinan natin na "hoy original tong amin!" when in fact unnecessary naman talagang sabihin pang original ang mga gawa natin since in the first place, artists strive for originality.

ayun.  :-D

tomo

i think at this point we still have to distinguish between pinoy artists who are making original pinoy music, and pinoy artists who are just trying to be the pinoy version of *particular foreign act*. much like the 50s and the 60s where we'd have pinoy versions of elvis presley or perry como. i think being a 'pinoy artist that continously strives for originality' is a still relatively new movement (since it started in the 70s) in our culture and needs every bit of our help and support.

And by that i mean it falls upon all of us, as consumers to be responsible in our choices--not by indescriminately buying local cds, but by buying cds and going to gigs with regards to our own standards of quality and of course, personal preference. In doing so we help WEED OUT those who we think are unworthy of representing our identity as a race and culture. Because in the end, when visitors from the grimlap system excavate the ruins of our by then submerged country, the basis of our culture and lifestyle will be in the relics and artifacts that we produce and value.
