Anlupit!  Mapapatanong ka kung tao ba siya.  hehe.  Pinoy represent!

btw... Although I love Alicia Keys, i believe she isn't hiphop neither is Ashanti or J-Ho... opps.. I meant J-Lo.

The best hiphop came out in the beginning during the late 70s till about the late 90s from the time that Notorious B.I.G. died. There are a few groups/artists/bands that are good right now, but the majority of hiphop on MTV or on the radio is utter garbage.
Title: Talkin bout the best in P.I.
Post by: Sharon on January 05, 2005, 04:26:07 PM
Definitely when your talkin bout the best in the land... 7shots of wisdom comes to mind.. they recently won the 93 flava awards openmic group of the year award. the "Song of the year" award for their song "Tonight your mine ". Their album which is called "love and Hate" bagged  the "album of the year award". and they were included in the open mic "mixtape song of the year" award that is a good day.. krazykyle with 7shots. That was 4 out of the 6 awards given by a reputable organization rx 93.1. These are the people who play the music. A radio station would not be biased about any artist. They have to give love to all the artist especially those who have recording deals with bigtime record labels.. which 7 shots dont have. they are almoxt indipendent.. they are only distributed by EMI but that's about it. So What do you think?[/b]

im not really into rap music now, i used to though, when i was 12... and yes, i think all rappers today belongs to the trash and that they make music that doesnt involve talent... only a computer and a few hi-tech [gooey brown stuff]. the ONLY rappers that ill give props to out there is Bone thugz n' harmony, tupac shakur, nas, and biggie smalls.. they're the REAL poets, none of that nelly, chingy, jaekwon, lil jon [gooey brown stuff].. i bet that if the old school rappers see how the rappers today become so dumbfouned and conceited, they woulda shot them... and yes im talking about that hippo-face fat joe and all the other rappers who always put "yo dawg, i got money, i got bling bling, i got hoes, im a pimp, party party, mah niiiiiga".. to their raps. f*ck 'em.

even though im not into rap music that much anymore, im still giving my respects to the legendary poets of all time...

butt in lang pare,  pero kahit pa in and out sila sa music industry, no one can deny that all of them, I mean ALL of them are very talented artist, especially Krayzie Bone. Plus, yung lyrics nila, medyo socially inclined at progressive, compared to new artists na puro (I think) material and profit oriented lyrics ang sinusulat. I have their solo albums dati, and kahit na di sila magkakasama, malulupit pa din sila lahat. lalo na yung album na Thug Mentality ni Krayzie Bone at Schizoprenic ni Bizzy Bone. A really must have for everyone who listens to them.

well, just my 2 cents.. :-D

the best hip-hop artists don't need to brag about having more money than your average person or brag about how many women he's slept with or how big the rims on his car are. he talks about real issues and is a storyteller in every sense of the word. check the discographies of the notorious b.i.g., big l, tupac, nas, jay-z, little brother, the roots, jurassic 5, dilated peoples, mos def, talib kweli, deadprez, stetsasonic, beanie sigel, the pre-fame eminem, and so much more...

Eric B and Rakim is still my most favorite.  Rakim changed the blueprint of flow and delivery for an emcee.  Before that, everyone did the humpty-dumpty style of spitting a-la Beastie Boys/Run DMC/Boogie Down Productions (specifically KRS One).  Rakim was the first to use the more conversational delivery and train-of-thought spit-style that can be heard in Jay Z, Talib Kweli, and beyond.

Their album Follow The Leader should be in every serious hip hopper's record collection.

Here are three of my favorite Eric B and Rakim tracks.  Old school, y'all!

HIPHOP is
- mc'ing
- dj'ing (turntablism)
- breakdancing
- grafitti

Why?

HipHop == Underground

Yung karamihan ng mga nabanggit dito:
- gangsta rappers
- rNb (not the orig) singers

Maski sa US. PUro gangsta rappers!!

PS - hiphop pala si alicia keys

No one could be the best for me. But there are A LOT of music from Hiphop artists that are worth listening to. The best produced hiphop music are from the golden age era, with artists like:

Nas
Biggie Smalls
Wutang Clan
Killarmy
Sunz of Man
Krs-One
Gangstarr
Marley Marl
Jeru da Damaja
Afu Ra
Az
Canibus
Mobb Deep
Big L
Mood
Kool G Rap
Gravediggaz
Heltah Skeltah
OGC
Black Moon
Das Efx
Pete Rock & CL Smooth
Hieroglyphics
Cypress Hill
De La Soul
Grand Agent
House of Pain
Jurassic 5
Dilated Peoples
Large Professor
MC Lyte
Blackstar
Tribe Called Quest
Smiff n Wessun
Souls of Mischief
People Under the Stairs
The Roots
The Firm
Roots Manuvah
MC Supernatural
Digable Planets

and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
this was the vibe before: now you have emcees who dress like ladies, trying to look cute, putting fashion first before lyrical intricacy.
Enough of the colorful/crunk/south/chicken dance/auto-tune garbage.
The culture needs 'ethnic cleansing'.

@Black.gh0st.Knife: great list, you have all the classics covered...but no public enemy, dr. dre and snoop dog? "the chronic" and "doggystyle" are classics...and p.e./hank shocklee is simply unparalleled for sheer sonic onslaught..apocalyptic stuff it is...

there's also the fairly quirky/"avant garde"/fringe stuff from the era like deltron3030 (with del tha funkee homosapien who later on went to join the gorillaz), dr octagon, boogiemonsters, channel live (they have a killer track "mad izm" with krs-one)

im also partial to the golden age/90s and i dig many of those artists you mentioned, but there's still some good stuff out today like antipop consortium, aesop rock...and you must check out the freehoudini album by themselves. its free for download somewhere on the web, its pretty insane and as far removed from the souljaboi/autotune bullsh*t as you can get

im digging the new jayz "death to autotune" hehe...nice and dirty and how often do you hear a hot jazz trumpet on the radio nowadays?

also obsessing over this track:
mos def is one suave motherf*cker
Title: Re: Best Hip Hop Artist

@chuck sabbath:
Yeah, i forgot to mention them. Cut me some slack. I kinda overlooked them. Personally, I listen mainly to east coast emcees coz for me, they're much grittier and harder than their western counterparts. But yeah, those albums definitely add to the list.  :-D

You're definitely right, though hiphop has been infected by crappy artists, there are still a lot good [gooey brown stuff] coming out. New school artists still preserve the culture of the music, in terms of beat production and lyricism, and is continuing to progress as time goes by. New breed of artists like Jedi Mind Tricks, Army of the Pharaohs, Non Phixion (now disbanded), Immortal Technique, Warcloud, Snowgoons, Eyedea, Rhyme Asylum, Necro, Q-Unique, Mr. Hyde, Mr. Lif, Swollen Members, Atmosphere, 7L & Esoteric, Lost Children of Babylon, Remedy, Timbo King, Royal Fam, Brother Ali, Rjd2, Mr. Dibbs, Sound Providers, Binary star, Jean Grae, Planet Asia, MF Doom, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, etc., still keep the culture sacred. Nowadays, it's the lyrics and skills that will define your wackness or dopeness, that's why hiphop is considered a true test of mind.

For those who haven't seen the hiphop documentary "Rhyme and Reason" watch it here:

Highly recommended and it'll definitely broaden your perspective about the music.

BTW: It's really rare nowadays to hear some jazzy horns or soulful breakdown samples, so that's something fresh from the radio. And yes, Mos Def is an ill mofo.

hey no problem just have a soft spot for the west coast 90s stuff cause thats how i got into hiphop in the first place back in college..amerikkkas most wanted by ice cube is the best of both worlds in a sense with a west coast mc (ice cube) and east coast production (hank shocklee/pe production team)

New breed of artists like Jedi Mind Tricks, Army of the Pharaohs, Non Phixion (now disbanded), Immortal Technique, Warcloud, Snowgoons, Eyedea, Rhyme Asylum, Necro, Q-Unique, Mr. Hyde, Mr. Lif, Swollen Members, Atmosphere, 7L & Esoteric, Lost Children of Babylon, Remedy, Timbo King, Royal Fam, Brother Ali, Rjd2, Mr. Dibbs, Sound Providers, Binary star, Jean Grae, Planet Asia, MF Doom, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox,

damn the only one i know there is aesop rock and immortal technique! have some catching up to do...
