Title: Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival
Post by: pinoymusika on April 02, 2005, 11:45:09 AM
I just bought this DVD last night and I've seen it 3 times already! Sulit talaga!! This is a 3 hour 2-DVD set documenting a guitar summit that Eric Clapton organized last year (June 2004). If you like blues or blues oriented players this is a real treat... though it also has non Blues performances like Santana and Clapton playing together on "Jingo", Larry Carlton playing Steely Dan's "Josie", Steve Vai, and even John Mayer doing an excellent 6 string workout as an intro to "City Love."

There's also a great tribute to the late Stevie Ray Vaughn ("Six Strings Down") by his brother Jimmie Vaughn with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Clapton. And there's this amazing young pedal steel player named Robert Randolph on stage too who will make you scratch your head wondering why you never knew a 13-string pedal steel could sound like that.

The guitar players on this DVD:

Eric Clapton
Robert Cray
Hubert Sumlin
Jimmie Vaughn
Buddy Guy
B.B. King
John Mclaughlin
Larry Carlton
Jonny Lang
David Hidalgo (Los Lobos)
Carlos Santana
John Mayer
Joe Walsh
ZZ Top (!!)
Eric Johnson
Robert Randolph
Doyle Bramhall
James Taylor (what's he doing here)
J.J. Cale (he wrote "Cocaine" and "After Midnight")
Vince Gill (some country guy, good playing though)
and more...

Also nice to see some famous supporting players like:
Billy Preston (Hammond)
Steve Gadd (drums for Clapton)
Nathan East (Bass for Clapton)
Dennis Chambers (drums - played for Santana and John McLaughlin)
Billy Sheehan (bass - with Steva Vai)
Donald Duck Dunn (bass- with Joe Walsh)

There are tons of interviews with the players and an interesting feature that allows you to skip directly to a guitar solo in a song.

I also found an easter egg on Disc 2 - from the "Extras" main menu click at a hidden third option, it wil play back a great live performance of Clapton doing "Layla".

Hi Jim,

Johanns here.  I had to re-register under a new moniker, but thought I'd just make my presence felt again out here in the message board after you sent that link out at the Pinoyrock mailing list.

Anyway, thanks for reminding me about this DVD.  A friend gave this to me as a gift last Christmas and I've still got to see it completely.  I'll have to say that from the portions I've checked out, it's good.  The Steve Vai section is just amazing.  I used to like Vai's music but after a while, I got burned out on the cold technique he always exhibits.  I was drawn more to Eric Johnson's parts and John Mayer's.  I've been fortunate to see John Mayer live on two occasions.  The radio music is just one side to a muti-faceted musician.  He does a really good reading of Wind Cries Mary and some Stevie Ray Vaughn in his live sets.  It was a pleasure to see him the first time around.  I wish he showed the same passion the second time I checked out his set though as he seemed to just phone in his performance.

About Vince Gill...he's Amy Grant's husband and is one heckuva bluegrass/country guitarist.  He was a second-hand inspiration for me when I did guitar duties on a friend's bluegrass recording project.

Ah! Thanks for the info... I discovered Amy Grant in the mid-90's through an album called "Unguarded" way before she crossed over to Pop through those awful duets with Peter Cetera... anyone married to Amy is alright in my book - anyway Gill had a great "sagutan" with the dobro player in the festival which I enjoyed immensely...

That dobro player is Jerry Douglas (http://www.jerrydouglas.com/bio.cfm).  He's part of Alison Krauss's Union Station group.  I'm sure you've heard him before.  He did the vocals for George Clooney and main guitar parts to the Soggy Bottom Boys songs in O Brother, Where Art Thou.  I recommend you pick up Alison Krauss and Union Station's live album and DVD (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006LLLN/qid=1112562200/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/102-9529325-1624942).  It's one of the best live albums I've ever heard.  All the instruments come up clearly and their song choices are top notch.  In fact, their song Lucky One is the song my friend recorded a cover version of and I played guitar in.

Bought a copy of this a couple of months back. And I've watched it a few times already.

Best jams in the DVD would have to be:

the performance by Robert Cray, the BB King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan jam (Rock Me Baby)and the Sweet Home Chicago Jam. All the Clapton sets as well.
