Title: MANGINI vs DONATI

the technical vs the technical
both have been known to session for guitar players, playing polymetric songs, playing fast all over the drums.
in Mike's Z Clinic. He recommended Virgil to Steve when he wanted to leave the band.
My vote goes to Mangini. IMO, he's more musical. Plus, I like his tone better. He knows when to stop doing polyrhythms. I mean, lets face it. Polyrhythms are cool. If you pull one out, its hardly you can't express a fellow stick-in-arms. But the way Virgil uses them doesn't sound musical most of the times. Whereas Mike will use it at the right moment.
By the way, both are really good friends and exchange licks and tips.

I mostly enjoyed steve vai albums where bozzio and mangini were the drummers. But i guess this doesn't say much if I'm about to compare drummers (mangini and donati) since these are different times and different sets of songs. Was mostly looking at it as a whole, not just the drummer themselves.
I'll need more exposure to a lot of both Mike and Virgil's work to get a better view :-)

well for me try to check out reign of fire first before judging donati. mangini is good but I only can recognize his speed. and he plays like a punk drummer. Virgil Donati uses his inovation in playing drums. I mean with regards to volume dynamics. I would go to donati. Well donati is my bet.

For jaw-drops and "how'd he do that?" type of moments = DONATI For jaw-drops and "I wish I can do that..." type of moments = MANGINI
Mike Mangini can do some weird stuff but still sound musical at the same time. Donati sounds more robotic (hence more out of this world). But I like 'em both...

pasingit lang, Pinoydrums dudes! ganda ng topic e :) i'd go for Mike Mangini. i really dig his playing style more than Donati's. and yeah, Mangini sounds more musical. Donati is the ultimate drum soloist, though.. grabe sa speed and technique!

isa pang kinagulat ko when i watched zildjian day in philippines and mangini is the main performer, may nagtanong about paradiddle or something about rolls, kasi nga ang bilis niya and then ang sagot niya di siya gumagamit ng paradidle or madalang so imagine ang mga 5 strokes, 6 and so on and so on doing it by single stroke nakakapagod d ba and i saw donati using bouce rolls or with double strokes most of the times.... so mangini, magaling din si donati.... :-D gulo ko noh....peace po Godbless

necrobump to ha. for me napupunta nako sa mike camp dahil sa dream theater. ang galing ng naiisip niya. pero gusto ko madining ng buo yung dance of eternity ni virgil dahil iniba niya yung ibang parts. pero overall musician pa din si donati. :-D

Parehong halimaw kaso mas kwela si Mangini parang simpleng tao lang kung umasta mas magaan yung dating nya sayang di ko nakita clinic nya dine.
Si VD masyadong siryoso dating nabulyawan nga mga tao dito sa pinas nuong nag clinic sya dito kasi nagkwekwentuhan lang mga tao naingayan ata sya kasi parang di sya pinapansin haha! Witness ko yun kasi nasa harapan ako 5 feet away from the master kaya para akong naulanan ng sandamukal na live drumming porn hahaha!!!
Si Thomas Lang maganda mind set nya kasi sabi nya sa drumeo channel yung mga bago nyang drum routine eh more musical...technical pa rin daw pero more musical naman hehe so mas masarap sa pandinig kumpara sa mga ginagawa nila MM at VD mga drummers at music geeks lang makakaintindi.
Kung may video kayo na tumutugtog sila ng old school bebop jazz swing hehe pashare naman curios tlga ako ano feel nila sa ganitong music kasi di ko pa sila nakita mag drums ng jazz tlga.

Haha sir yung about kay Donati, andon din ako nung time na yun, may libre pa ngang canned drinks at dimsum diba.. yung second round na nag distribute sila ng snacks dun napabulyaw si master Donati kasi mejo nag-ingay yung mga kumukuha ng snacks haha. sa yupangco yun diba tapat ng mapua makati?
anyway going back to the topic 1.Donati 2.Mangini I like them both, pero maka thunder from down under ako hehe...
