Guys - I'm really getting interested in building clones of cool pedals (not modding pedals, that's another topic). I thought we could start a Build Your Own Clone club and discuss our projects and experiences here.
Building my own "bowteek" pedals would be a great hobby but I don't think it will cure my GAS. Let me state my reasons for pursuing DIY pedals:
- some pedals that I want to include in my arsenal are bowteek but prolly shouldn't really cost much (eg, booster)
- some options/configurations/functions in certain pedals aren't offered in botweek or mass produced pedals (eg, three types of boost in one pedal)
- nothing beats the satisfaction of DIY
Having said that, I'm a total newbie in this endeavor (my experience is limited to changing out and soldering gtr pickups). Maybe it'll turn out that I'm too dumb for the task, but I wanna try anyway... But if any of you have tried this, pls share your experience and expertise. If you are a newbie also and wanna form a self-help community, let's learn together. We don't have to post all our questions and answers within this thread; but we can post our overall project experiences (with pics) here. I'm thinking we might even organize an in-person clinic or workshop where one DIYer can help walk us through a build, or someone can teach us something as basic as distinguishing between transistors, capacitors, op-amps, etc. or 'soldering' on PCBs...
One thing I'm very interested in learning is how and why things work the way they do, how certain designs and components affect the sound. Instructions and schematics are prolly enough for most people but it'd be nice to enhance our 'technology of tone'.
Game? Ok, gentlemen (and women)... fire up your irons.
