B.Y.O.C. Club/Blog... (DIY bowteek pedals)
« on: June 07, 2007, 05:35:35 PM »
Guys - I'm really getting interested in building clones of cool pedals (not modding pedals, that's another topic).   I thought we could start a Build Your Own Clone club and discuss our projects and experiences here.

Building my own "bowteek" pedals would be a great hobby but I don't think it will cure my GAS.  Let me state my reasons for pursuing DIY pedals:
- some pedals that I want to include in my arsenal are bowteek but prolly shouldn't really cost much (eg, booster)
- some options/configurations/functions in certain pedals aren't offered in botweek or mass produced pedals (eg, three types of boost in one pedal)
- nothing beats the satisfaction of DIY

Having said that, I'm a total newbie in this endeavor (my experience is limited to changing out and soldering gtr pickups).  Maybe it'll turn out that I'm too dumb for the task, but I wanna try anyway...  But if any of you have tried this, pls share your experience and expertise.  If you are a newbie also and wanna form a self-help community, let's learn together. We don't have to post all our questions and answers within this thread; but we can post our overall project experiences (with pics) here.  I'm thinking we might even organize an in-person clinic or workshop where one DIYer can help walk us through a build, or someone can teach us something as basic as distinguishing between transistors, capacitors, op-amps, etc. or 'soldering' on PCBs...

One thing I'm very interested in learning is how and why things work the way they do, how certain designs and components affect the sound.  Instructions and schematics are prolly enough for most people but it'd be nice to enhance our 'technology of tone'.

Game?  Ok, gentlemen (and women)... fire up your irons.  :-)

Here are some resources to start off with:

muzique.com
geofex.com
DIYstomboxes.com

I plan to source my first kit from BYOC (a tribooster)
http://www.buildyourownclone.com/index.html

FYI, Alexan also offers kits.  I already have an OD kit but haven't started yet.  (I have a feeling that time/availability will be one of the major stumbling blocks.  Builds might take months!)

NOTE:  Since DIY community nga ito, sana we focus our posts and discussion on relevant and useful topics.  Sana naman yung sobrang basic at non-technical questions na nasasagot naman sa resources na binibigay e basahin muna (eg, magkano kit, kumpleto ba, etc.).  In short, no spoon-feeding!

- titser_marco just recently completed a clyde wah (?)
- dami pa...

Care to share guys?

ang daming kits available, but not all of them are for guitar.   IIRC, the instructions are pretty bare/basic.  i'll look at them again and will try to build it over the weekend.

haha! sobrang tama lang! kasi me and my friend are into DIY pedals ngayon lang.. napaGAS ako dun sa overdrive/booster thread (tama ba?) kung saan pinakita na ang big guns ng bowteek pedals.. and since i'm an ECE major naman, might as well masubukan na rin para at least all that theory becomes something concrete.. hehe..

but probably i'll start with the more common pedals first.
and in my few hours of research, i came up with this 2 sites na marami talagang schematic.

http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schempage.php?cat=1
and
http://www.schematicheaven.com/effects.htm

both sites have an array of pedals..

yung tanong ko lang for experienced DIYers, reliable ba schematics nila?
tsaka mukhang mahirap ata maghanap ng mga quality components for opamps and transistors..
hehe..

as of now, sinusubukan mo munang isimulate sa Multisim/EWB para macheck lang. yung DS1 na sinimulate ko dati ayaw gumana. kaya napaisip ako kung reliable ba talaga mga circuit nila. or try ko nalang ulit.

for those experienced in DIY, tips naman!

salamat..

bummer..

so far wala pa ako nahahanap..
yung problem kasi dun is nakakalito (at least for me it is) tingnan yung connections na naka etch sa PCB.. kaya as much as possible having a schematic helps..

and it also helps if the schematic and actual wiring pictures/diagrams are presented together.. hehe.. pampadali ng buhay..

baka gusto niyo itry to.

www.generalguitargadgets.com

mas comprehensive siya kesa ibang sites with schematics. dito kasi may mga wiring diagrams and item list. kaya mas nakakatulong.

ay question..

pano kayo gumawa at ano ginamit sa casing for the circuitry? metal talaga?
bummer..

actually totoo din yan.. but pwede rin namang tingnan as learning experience (not only for tone) but for DIY as a craft..

 :-D

Nice layman's language resource!  Tnx for sharing.  :-)

Altho we're not promoting any specific builder, sana yung mga ibang expert mag-share din dito.. (eg, ejbasses, BAMF, etc.)... tulung-tulungan lang...  Sa TGP yung mga boutique makers nagtutulungan and support each other altho they're products are competing in the market.

mas ok kung meron talaga magbu-build ng clone, then document dito sa thread... in that way, mapagtutulungan i trouble shoot kung meron man trouble...

also, magiging magandang learning experience sa lahat na makita yung step by step development ng paggawa ng DIY clone.

o, sino mauuna?  :-)
