PINOY INDIE BANDS HEADLINE BRITISH SOUNDTRIP
Top rock bands Twisted Halo and Squid 9 topbill the
special concert
at Dish on Saturday, April 17, capping the British
Council's sound
engineering workshop. Joining the indie triad is
up-and-coming
group The Purplechickens, which completes a three-set
gig that opens
its doors to the public at 4:00 p.m., courtesy of
Natural-Born
Klubbers (NBK).
Twisted Halo is known for their principled,
uncompromising approach
to rock music. With a tightness and synergy borne of
discipline and
passion, they translate the emotion inherent in their
song lyrics
into sonic messages that evoke the very moods of
today's youth
amidst Philippine society . Darkness, redemption,
connection and
communication indeed thread the virtual wall of sound
that envelops
Twisted Halo audiences. Claiming musical influences
from UK acts
like Radiohead and David Bowie, they are at the
forefront of the
current independent music movement in the Philippines.
Squid 9 is more popularly known as Raimund Marasigan
of Eraserheads
and Sandwich fame. His forays into electronica, rap,
and drum n'
bass have earned him collaborations with such artists
as Rivermaya,
Imago, and Freestyle. Squid 9 has released three
albums -- "Inkjet"
(recorded in his home studio), "Deleted Scenes" (a
remix compilation
of songs by various local acts) and "Kraken Modular".
Former E-head
mate Buddy Zabala joins Raimund and other artists
during Squid 9's
live performances.
The Purplechickens, fondly called Manox by their
friends and fans,
is an experimental group that melodically pushes the
boundaries of
songcraft. Composed of artists and writers from UP
Diliman, they
are known for their complex pop structures and
impressionistic
lyrics swathed in soundscapes. Their debut album,
"Here's Plan B"
is currently enjoying airplay on NU 107, via their
carrier single "A
Break in a Prayer." The group's rabid following now
equates them to
the local counterpart of Radiohead and Blur.
Together, Twisted Halo, Squid 9, and The
Purplechickens banner the
British Council's aggressive move to reach out to
Filipino youth
through contemporary music. The concert at Dish,
located at Level
3 of Rockwell Powerplant, also launches a special
sign-up campaign
for the British Council's UKLink club, whose members
can avail of
privileges to access resources at their newly-opened
Knowledge and
Learning Centre at Taipan Place along Emerald Avenue.
