Hi JB,
Is there any chance your friend could sell a few plunks(kamagong wood)?
Thanks a lot!

ok storytime...

i drove my wife to a place where she was told can be a place to set up our small business.  the property belonged to her mom's friend.
it was a large compound, i was walking around and i saw this:

what the?!  so i took a closer look.  and behold:

kamagong baby!

and mystery wood that were huge!  i put a sawed off coke bottle so you can get an idea how huge they are.

so apparently it's been sitting there since the 60's.  the father had a furniture business back then and he died so the planks were left there in a huge shed.

i want to buy a few planks!  but i would have to wait monday until the family friend returns.  i was told its not hers but her brother's.  so i hope i can convince them to sell a few planks of the stuff.

wish me luck :-D

They're still there, maxi.  the owner still does not want to sell at all, sentimental daw since they belonged to his late father.  he'll let me know (daw) if he changes his mind.  but i really doubt it.  anyway i can get planks from another source.  and i have fretboard planks of kamagong, honduran rosewood, panama rosewood and indian rosewood.  let me know if you'd like to get some, i suppose.

i'm still active, well, more or less.  i visit the site every few weeks but i don't post.  i'm going by the old saying, "the more you speak to show off how smart you are the more people will realize how stupid you really are" lol

while i'm here, might as well expose my stupidity:

been working on a few things.  tele bodies.  i got a lot of planks from torn houses from the 1960s so i thought to make a few hollow bodies from 60 year old planks.  the top is red narra, and i made 4 of them.  (the other one is somewhere in the pile)  but i think i cut the f holes of 2 bodies too big, since i copied it from a luthier friend.   i have no interest in building with them for now.

i like the nail holes and the wear and tear.  adds character

lacote guitar: engelmann spruce top with crazy maple quilt.   got the maple from an estate sale of a dead luthier.  sorry for being morbid.

here's it is next to the standard flamenco guitar that i built for my wife:

ok tama na...sorry lol

ikaw maxi, musta ka na?

nice JB! you should share your work more if you have time! oks naman ako - being a dad really keeps me from GAS.  :-D

those Narra teles look solid. 60yrs is more than enough time to dry wood. making it semi-hollow for weight relief? from what I've heard, mabigat ang narra eh.

killer lacote and flamenco! grabe yung quilt ng maple. do you have planks of that thing that can be made into an electric guitar top?

hehehehe!  having a child makes everything else look less important.

the body wood is some sort of luan.  the top is narra, and it's not that heavy at all.  i have some quilted maple planks but i think it will be too thin for you, around 4-5mm thick.  if you can work with that sure.  i think i have a set of european maple plates that would fit.  not quilted but flamed.

Usually ginagamit ang exotic wood sa top ng guitar pero ang main body ng guitar is mahogany pa rin para sa mga lp type na guitar.

my custom guitar before, 3 pc solid mahogany body, straight through neck, ebony fingerboard, gold mop and abalone inlays.
