How did you guys start? and practice?
« on: October 15, 2010, 12:57:37 AM »
Just a beginner question, I've recently started to play the drums and came into the question on how?
Nagstart lng ba kayu by the feel of the beat? or does sheet music all the way help? pagnagaadlib kasi ako sa drums panay old drum sheet music natutunan ko. feel ko, the problem lies with me being uncomfortable with the drums, and not being able to play the beat in my head when i hear a song. kayo po? panu po ba kayu nagstart, and how kayu magpractice? with metronome? with sheet music? watching youtube drum videos on how they do it (by song covers)? or just listening then playing the song?

ako,..

i started with a beatbox, then after i got the beat on my hand, i bought a generic kit and play learn teached myself all alone its more than 2 years before i discovered drum lessons on youtube (wierd huh?)

but yeah since then i'm a proud loner drummer, me myself and I just teached each other for more than two years,.. i learned to practice independence and coordination on both feet and hands by listening carefully to those songs like (spongecola, rivermaya, typecast,my chem ""that was 2 years ago""),..
i cant forget the first beat i'm going to beat! hehe
the drum fill and the beat on "nakapagtataka" revived by spongecola
so thats it, i learned from zero to something by myself

but the dark side is, since i have no teacher or even friend drummer, i practice a lot of wrong method which result of a long period of correction

till i go out to my box and see the real world of drumming

Key here is practice, practice and practice. Mas may edge ka kasi you have fundamentals na. Ako pinangarap kong magka-fundamentals dati but no one taught me. Sa "manual" drumming gaya sayo, kelangan mo lang masanay sa drum language and the rest will come easy as you improve.

Kung madami kang spare time, try achieving 3,000 hours total of practice time – that’s a little over 8 hours a day for a year (do the math if you don’t have 8 a day). At 3k you will have mastered the basics. At 6k you will have advanced in the craft. At 10k you will have been a drum master. ;)

I started with pillows. Eventually got a generic kit as well. I took 12 sessions, but it was all "jamming". 12 hours of jamming! Lol! Played in a cover band, so I listened and copied. After a good 10years... I bought a book and discovered rudiments, etc. I'm not that good, but whatever. Practice has made me better. And it doesn't happen overnight, but it's hella fun.  :-D

Tanung ko lang... Anu ba tutugtugin mo??? Kapag sheet music kahit san ako mag-air drum... basta may lugar at wala akng naiistorbo...

Para sakin the key is sound dapat clear & gets ng tenga mo... Timing syempre dapat swak ang hits...
Always take time to slow down kapag di mo ma-gets yung beat of fill...

nakaka adik nga eh kase araw araw may bago ako natututunan...

MAGTRATRABAHO AKO AT MAGKAKAPERA
PAMBILI NG KUNG ANO ANO !!!

naka graduate ako at nakahanap agad ng trabaho dahil nag aral ako ng mabuti...
ngayon nasa proseso ako ng pag buo ng aking kit

pag pasensyahan nyo na napahaba ata kwento ko, may hangover pa ako tapos dumerecho ako sa opisina at medyo sabaw na sabaw na utak ko
kaya dito nlng ako ng kwento.

i started by literally hitting the books.     siguro mga grade 6 or 1st year HS ako nun when i'd use study break to set up a makeshift drum set with my school books and play along to beatles songs or whatever was on the radio (most probably glam rock)...tapos nung 1st year HS din ako pinaglalaruan ko yung drum set sa music room namin sa school, during music class.  yan tuloy, pinag-on the knuckles pushups ako ng music teacher namin...

4th year HS na ako nung nagtry ulit akong magdrums...didn't sound too good.  tried a couple times before graduating high school, and in the summer of '95, at 16, i jammed with some of my cousin's friends nung nagcecelebrate kami ng town fiesta.  from what i remember, "laklak" at "balong malalim" yung tinutugtog namin nun.  it would be 1-2 years later, at the ripe old age of 17 or 18, when i finally joined my first band, and got fired after just one practice dahil sobra kong bano.  late bloomer kung late bloomer!

and now i'm in my early 30's, veteran of several bands, and still don't own my own drum set.  but that hasn't stopped me on GAS-sing up on cymbals and sticks come 13th month pay...   :-D  pagdating naman sa practice, i'm so busy at work that i can only practice when the rest of the band does...pag nasa band studio kami.  i have no formal training, learned by trying to mimic what i heard on the radio back in the day, never used a metronome in my life, so everything is just instinctive for me.  but that's just me...di ko rin masasabi na magaling ako, even with almost 15 years experience in the band scene...

I started when my ate was highschool and i was about 9 years old. My ate bought a drumkit kaya parang sabi ko ang cool naman. So i sneak in and played the drums while the track of Simple Plan was playing. Tapos dirediretso i played "Narda" then i stop playing dahil natamad. Tapos nung 13 years old ako which is first year highschool sikat ang mga banda! so i started to play along with our band begginer pa lang kami nun so eraserheads kami.

I never had thought of renting drums instead of playing in amusement centers, if had just done that, but anyways.

Tapos : single stroke, double stroke, 5 stroke, 7 stroke, 9 stroke, chaka paradiddle.

Sa ngayon pag nag prapractice ako, nag sstart muna ako sa hita puro random combinations mostly exaggerating the moller technique and I also do a bit of phrasing so kahet papaano may konting musical idea form singles to doubles, diddles, flams, double stops, even buzz stroke sa hita. Tapos hita sa practice pad naman, binabalot ko sa t-shirt yung pad para muffled yung tunog at the same time less bounce. Ganun lang ako mag practice, I never bothered myself practicing to songs and the worst part of my regimen is that I don't practice my FEET, puro kamay lang. The only thing that I do to with my feet when practicing is constant tapping to 8th notes sometimes 16th and the triplet pattern K L R, K R L, on so on...

Ang masasabe ko kay Sir. mendrics, since hinde naman ako magaleng chaka di rin ako band drummer pero just a thought try mo praktisin yung trip mong kanta just the hi-hat, snare, and bass drum. Utilize mo yung buong dynamic range ng tatlong yun chaka laruin mo lang yung kanta. In that way you get to loosen up and get more ideas. Chaka hangga't maare try to play it in memory yung kanta para di mo na kelangan masahado ulit ulitin pakingan yung kanta tapos try to chunk the song like just the verse, you would play the verse inside your head and just play the verse and so on... I hope it helps.

Willing nmn ako maghintay kahit ganu katagal para gumaling, i'm in no rush pero kelangan parin magpractice of course.

Pero in the end practice parin diba ahahah
