i used to have samplitude and made some mixing here and there but still i don't know how to manage ctrl XX commands. like what to do in case I am in a situation my cursor changes., or what ctrl XX command (if there is any) are you going to use if you want to change/correct pitches.

Not much of a Samplitude user here, I'm afraid. Been using Sonar's V-Vocal for most of my pitch and time correction lately. Still waiting for Melodyne's DNA.

samp 10 user here.  you just gotta get used to the mouse modes.  kinda bit of a steep-ish learnin curve though.

whaddya mean pitch changes? sa midi ba or elastic audio?  i have no experience with samp 7 though, i started on samp 9.  lotsa helpful people over at the official samplitude forum.

I sometimes feel there are more commands when right clicking than even in the menu bar. I have Samp 8SE and I really find the mixer to be very powerful, although I got put off when they somewhat crippled the SE version.

comin from fl studio, then reason, to cubase vst, which was my first proper sequencer, samp did seem wholly un-intuitive - which i guess put off a lot of people as well.  i started on samp 9 se, which was pretty great except for the lack of the essential plugins in the full version.  i tried logic 6 also, but it was worse intuitively for me.

then when i got my multicore, i switched to the full version.  still did most of my scores with reason and fl studio while i was learnin the ways of the samp -  well at least til i got the hang of it, i.e. less gropin around, more work done.  it's a very stable sequencer, and i swear by it with the unrealistic deadlines i deal with.

@thowlights - turn off software monitoring.

@juanberto - one must learn to crawl first before one can walk... learn how to mix well first before delving into mastering. One cannot create a good master if the mix itself is bad.

i've been wrestling with this problem ever since:

what will i do to get rid of that stubborn MIDI CLICK? any CC or NOTE command sent to my modules ( through 9-pin serial port ) produces a CLICK...

Finally got to use my Pre Sonus Inspire GT 1394. It's a bit FW card sensitive. The FW card has to have either a Texas Instrument chip set or VIA. Using Cubase SX3 software. Tutorials c/o Los of Up Dharma Down.

You have to understand that my personal studio is primarily based on sequencers; i.e., most of my sounds come from softsynths. That way, my recording process is merely rendering the various synths audio into specific tracks which I EQ and compress accordingly, entirely in the digital domain. It also helps that I have a soundcard (Emu) and monitoring system (AKG headphones and Fostex monitors) whose sound I trust completely. About the only time I will record externally is when I fly in vocals or the occasional guitar track into my software (presently Sonar 8 Professional), and then I also do mixing in the box. I also own Cubase, but have since migrated fully to Sonar since it became 64-bit.

Since my soundcard is capable of 8 analog inputs, I don't use a mixer. But where I work (Carmel House), we do use several good preamps (mostly Neve) which we use to fly in audio into our Pro Tools setup. Needless to say, we are capable of around 56 input channels, and have mixed more than 100 tracks at a time with the PT system.

For software, use the one you are comfortable with. I leaned early on towards Sonar because it's midi capabilities were what I seemed to be more comfortable with since Cubase's midi did not behave the way I wanted it to, although I found Cubase to be better at handling audio (this was during my Sonar 4/Cubase SL2 years). Some of my colleagues (Marvin Q, for. ex.) happily use Cubase (5) and Logic (9) with equal proficiency, but find Sonar to be quite garish visually.

Recording flow depends on how you work, but when recording a band, I normally like to get the lows sounding well first, and that means the kick and the bass. On other occasions, I will work on getting the vocals perfect first, then "design" the rest of the instruments around that - it is important that whatever is taking the lead in a song, whether vocals or an instrument, be the one to have the best sonic space, with the rest of the instruments supporting it.

Hahaha. I can't believe I only saw this now. :-)

Arrangement-wise or mixing-wise, I try my best not to take away the focus that which deserves it at that particular moment, whether it's a string line, a drum fill, or the lead vocal (of course, for the most part).

Yup. That's Kitc. :-)

Patulong lang mga bossing.

Magre-record kami ng acoustic tracks, kaya lang in the past, medyo dull and dry yung acoustic guitar track na na-record namin.

We use a direct connection to the PC tapos we use a condenser mic as well which connects to the PC both connects to the PC using Line 6 POD XT.

Nagtataka lang kami kasi hindi pa din ganun ka-sharp yung tunog.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Also, any quick tips on recording drum tracks? (specifically how to mic the kits)

Thanks ulit.

Bryan,

The thing about acoustic guitar is that it often needs room to breath. Aside from close miking techniques, we sometimes put up an ambience mic some distance away. For close miking, sometimes a stereo setup is desired; start with a mic at the 12th fret and another near the bridge about 6" away, then move them around until you find the sweet spot. This is how you get a balance of clarity and body. If these 2 mics capture what you want, sometimes an ambient mic isn't necessary. The direct connection often isn't the best since it is dependent on the quality of the piezo pickups - maybe passing this through a Fishman will help.

Drum miking? I've heard wonders done with 2 mic setups. The only thing to know is to use a really good pair of headphones with very good isolation characteristics, then position the mics (while listening through the cans) where it captures the essence of the drums. Sometimes, all it takes is a kick mic and 2 overheads once you position the mics carefully.

Take it from KitC. He's the Ernie Baron of the musicians. But once you get to know him, you'll find out he's just your regular everyday genius. :-)

The Fishman Aura is a little pricey, but it really does wonders. And you need to use one that's matched for the guitar you're using. :-)

Also, a great sounding room always helps in getting a good guitar sound. And drum sound, for that matter.

Drum miking? Most Motown records were recorded (as far as I know) with one overhead mic and another one for the bass drum. 2 overheads and 1 kick drum mic? I actually love that sound. Just make sure you don't put the overheads too close to the cymbals or your drum tracks are going to be cymbal-heavy, expecially if you don't have mics for the individual drums.
