Title: What to consider in Head Amp and Cabinets
Post by: mr.HTML on February 26, 2013, 09:12:46 AM
Mga Sir,

Ano po ba dapat i-consider kapag gagamit ng Head Amps and Cabinets, meron bang compatibility issues between the two?
Need ba dapat ng mataas na watts for Head Amp? meron kasi ako nakikita na ohms and i am not quite sure if it's really necessary na hanapin yung ohms nung makaka-pair nya.

Ok ganito:

Kung 8 ohms ang rating ng head mo, pwede mo siyang ikabit sa cabinet na rated 8 ohms or higher. Sa madaling sabi, pwede kahit 16 ohms, pero hindi pwedeng 4.

Sa wattage naman, medyo ganun din. Kung 50 watts ang head mo, pwede mo siyang ikabit sa cab na equal or greater wattage rating. So pwedeng single 50 watt speaker, or 4x12 na total ng 240 watts.

Ang recommendation ng ibang site na nababasa ko, yung wattage ng amp head mo multiplied by the square root of two (approx.

If you like mixing speakers in 4x12s or 2x12s, the power handling of the cab will always be  the number of speakers in the cab X the speaker with the least power handling.

Example.  If you get a 4x12 with two G12T75s (75 watts each) and two Greenbacks (G12M25), the maximum power your 4x12 can handle will be 4 X 25W = 100W.  (That is assuming your speakers all have the same impedance.)

Always match the impedance for maximum power transfer.  In general, tube amps will not blow even with lower impedance loads than the prescribed.  Say your Marshall tube head is set to see a 16ohm load, and you connect an 8ohm load, or even a 4 ohm load, that will be fine.  In fact a tube amp will not  get broken with a short circuit load.

SS amps are the opposite.  They can work with higher impedances than prescribed.  Even an open circuit load (infinite load) is fine.

Thank you po sa matyagang pag papaliwanag, even tho na nose bleed ako it's really helpful  :)

Grabe hanggang dito hinahabol ako ng Math kainis lang. Well anyway it's really good to know na may mga dapat iconsider sa pag pili ng Amps and Cabs.

space!! may lugar ka bang paglalagyan? kung nakatira ka sa isang studio type apartment/condo...i don't think a head/4x12 cab will suit you.

If you have space...then that's when you consider compatibility.  :)

for me, first thing to consider is roommate/housemate/neighbor. can they tolerate a cranked tube amp (half/full stack)? lol

The head + cab pairing must look good (i.e. the head should not overhang from the cab)!!

A cranked Marshall Major tapos naka full stack ka pa. Bigyan mo na lng ng ear muffs mga tao sa paligid

weight and form factor talaga ang big deterrent din e

Hello mga sir patanong na rin po!

Kasali rin ba yung mga heads na adjustable ang wattage? Lets say pupwede yung Head mo from 100W down to 50W or even 5W (example lang, not sure kung may amp na may ganitong options)

So kunwari mahina yun cab mo, di mo ba dapat ilagay sa 100W yun head? Sa pagkakaintindi ko, mag ooverload yun cab.

Sorry kung mukhang timawa yung tanong ko haha. Nalilito pa kasi ako.

Salamat sa pag intindi!  :-D

Newer lunchbox-size amps that Orange has been churning out lately (like the Brent Hinds model) have switches at the back panel that allow you to go from 15W to 1W.

I doubt merong 100W down to 5w. not sure tho.
If you want to calm the tits of 100W amp, get an amp attenuator.

Kung tama pagkakaintindi ko kung may 100 watts ka na amp, you can still use it with an equal wattage or lower AS LONG AS HINDI FULLY CRANKED ang amp mo, the issue na pwedeng sumabog ang speakers will only happen if you keep blasting it with a fully cranked amp to the wattage it has.

As for the lowering ng wattage, several amps already provide this type of attenuation built in, as samples:

1. Mesa Royal Atlantic 100 can go as low as 4 - 7 watts ata using power soak / attenuation
2. Mesa Triple Crown 100 can hit 3 watts using the same power soak technology
3. Laney Ironheart 60 - 120 watt heads (may varying attenuation that can go from full on 60 - 120 watts down to less than 1 watt)
4. Orange Rockerverb does this to an extent pero alam ko hanggang 30 watts lang minimum na kaya nya.

Also if you are planning to own a huge wattage amp, keep in mind that most of them "open up" their sound when they are cranked or pushed so if you opt to use it at lower volumes make sure na maganda yun taper ng master volume ng amp.

blackstar ata yung may ganyan. stepdown ng wattage.

normally, rule of thumb is, yung impedance ang titingnan mo kung match ang speakers sa head.
