SSL, Neve, Euphonix System 5, Fairlight, even the Icon, definitely out of my league, even if I get good prices from the manufacturers.  Only the TV networks can afford those here in the Philippines ( my friend who distributes Digidesign here in the Philippines, however, has just shipped one Icon system to the Cebu film school) .  I would not even invest in one or touch them with a 10 foot pole.  No way can you recover the investment.  Maybe if I win the the lotto.

Sir Mike, even if I could afford one, the maintenance is so fussy on those larger desks. Even the SSL AWS 900, which is currently the smallest one in the SSL range, requires periodic maintenance that costs a ton. I don't do music as a profession but man, if I did have enough income from it, it would be nice to have one at home. The 900 is bigger than my Control 24 but smaller than a full blown desk. I've used an ICON in the past for a live tracking project at a well known local rock watering hole and that desk is spanking clean, integrates well with Digi I/O gear too. No glitches from what I could tell. The interface is basically plug and play which is nice if you do a lot of recording projects and want something that is seamless. The closest thing I could say that compares to the ICON - currently - is the Sony OXford line of digital desks. Those are pretty sweet but just as expensive.

It would be nice if we can give more details. Why better in terms of looks, sound, amplify, flexibility, space, configuration etc. Why this set and brand of mixer is better than the other in your experience. Why this audio recording is better than the other in your experience. Why USB or firewire etc?

Remember guys we are here to share information, opinions and experiences otherwise we are all free to get them in the vast information of the internet which I'm sure most of you does.

We are not here to contest which one is good and better. The best word would be what makes them tick for you. Why you like them without some negative remarks with the others or "pautot".  And lets hope this goes with the other threads in this forum :-)

Firewire is better, better data bandwidth.

SSL AWS 900: Why? Because it is an SSL, a staple in a lot of studios and just as reputable as Neve in some respects. The configuration for the 900 allows you to have the best of analog tactile control while keeping one foot firmly placed in the digital revolution of pro-audio. The 900 integrates with virutally ANY digital sequencer and multitracking interface. You have a massive amount of channels, pres, SSL EQs, SOLID 100mm faders, and oh-so-sweet VU meters. The controls on the 900 gives you everything you could ever want to mix, record and arrange your songs whether you are a single person operation or a pro-studio doing music for business.

It doesn't hurt that the 900 looks spiffy as hell too.

Thank you. Although I did not much understand them I appreciate you sharing us your expertise. I'm sure there are a lot in this forum who are in depth with thsi technology like you. I am not an engineer, I am a musician. I am new into this and learning them. I use a an Alpha Lexicon 8 track recording and Cubase LE program. I released my first beta version of Selosa using this Alpha.

Now that I have a little idea I just realized that being good at this desktop recording studio will help me a lot. It gave me the ability to put everything in one place and record, write, and modify them many times. I'm sure I would need more better tools or audio equipment when I want to record live but for now I'm just learning them.  :-)

I hear you. I come from the same background so basically I am a musician first, pro-audio guy second. It just so happens that I've been doing the pro-audio thing for a few years and learned a few things here and there.
