The best products usually withstand not just the physical tortures of time but also withstand the trends in design and function.

For example in cars, a honda civic's design is good for about 4-6 years afterwhich a new model comes out or another brand comes up with a new trend in design. But in the case of euros like bimmers and MB's, their designs are years ahead of their class and withstand trends twice longer than their japanese counterparts.

That said, I always try to go somewhere in between the middle and the higher-end stuff. Like my cars, though I cannot afford brand new euros, I'd rather buy good pre-owned bmw's instead of buying brand new korean or japs. Makes more sense in the long run.

Clothes and shoes often run quickly out of style and wear out just as fast so I don't buy very expensive ones, I go for those somewhere in the middle of cheap and trendy. But I keep an emergency fund for special functions where a new suit, shoes, accessories are required, this is tucked away in one of the pockets of my americanas.

For household furniture and appliances, refs and aircons that last 10-15 years without repair, sturdy sofas and orthopedic beds, etc... are good investments, I don't skimp much, I buy the best I could afford.

Not buying cheap keeps your house clutter free, minimalist-ic.

My office is a whole different story though. Everything is cheap and un-trendy. Like my computers and my staffs computers, all are cheap unbranded pc's (but with licensed software naman), this way I can afford to upgraded to new ones every year. Doing this ensures that everyone will make sure all their data is redundant in their own systems, apart from my own redundancies as well. same with my office furniture, everything is cheap so I can afford to renovate as often as  every 18 months to 2 years. This way clients think I'm doing good as my office seems to be in constant refurbishing.

"You work in a job you hate, to buy stuff that you don't need, to impress people that you don't like."

- Fight Club

Imagine yourself dwelling in the following world:

You live in a safe pleasant and unpolluted community where you actually know your neighbors and interact with them, be it a small town, a suburb or even a city neighborhood. You can easily walk, bicycle or take effective mass transit to your nearby job, giving you time to think or read as you get there.

The work that you do improves our future, benefits your community and means something to you and those with whom you interact. You actually look forward to Monday. The longer that you are employed the more you learn and the more valuable you become to your employer with an increasing level of pay.

Your work schedule leaves you sufficient time to enjoy your friends, family and outside interests. Money isn't a controlling influence in your life because your needs are easily met. Your possessions are few, yet of high quality, thus allowing your home to be small, neat and inexpensive to own or rent.

You're connected to your surroundings, rather than just dwelling in them, your backyard, for example, provides most of the produce you might need plus a surplus that you can trade with neighbors. You have a stake in your community and participate in local decision making at the Town Council, P.T.A. and other grass roots organizations.. You buy what is necessary in nearby establishments whose owners are known to you and live in your community. If you have children, they walk to a nearby well-funded neighborhood school in safety and then learn authentic social skills as they interact with a community of honorably employed adults when away from school.

Occasionally you need to travel to a large store on the edge of town. You do this on a free shuttle bus or perhaps in a simple, older vehicle, the use and costs of which you might share with others or a car that you rent only when you need it, thus preserving for yourself the weeks or months that it takes to earn the thousands of after-tax Dollars that owning a new car would take away from you each year. Your interests, the things that you really like to do with your mind and your hands, all the possibilities of your life, are there to be explored because you have the time, energy and money to do so.

Having fewer things means enjoying what you have more and actually getting to use it, thereby raising its intrinsic value. The less clutter that one has in their surroundings, the fewer distractions there are from the essentials such as family, friends, food, nature and study. With less clutter, one needs a smaller space in which to live comfortably and thus needs to work less to pay rent to store things. If you haven't used something in the last year, how much likelihood is there that you ever will use it?

"The most important assets are brands.
Buildings age and become dilapidated.
Machines wear out.
Cars rust.
People die.
But what lives on are the brands."

Hector Liang
Chairman, United Biscuits

"Products are made in the factory, but brands are created in the mind."

-Walter Landor
Industrial Designer

"When people have lost their authentic personal taste, they lose their personality and become instruments of other people's wills."

Robert Graves

Can brands survive ecosystem collapse or the fall of our government?

Making do with less allows one to distance themself from the tendency of the victims of advertising to self-define according to the material objects possessed or not possessed, driven, drunk, worn, used, seen with or abused.

You usually see people thus affected in public places, lurking around a piece of machinery, such as a car or a boat. They bask in its radiance, act respectful and imply knowledge about its quality and providence. They act as they feel that they should act, making sure that others see them acting this way in the presence of the thing. They can only communicate with each other through the medium of the object, the cold piece of metal, in the presence of which they feel that they can speak to each other and actually show some emotion and interact.

The thing, the product, becomes a longed for goal, a means of justifying their existence, a way of envisioning themself in a different world with possession of the thing being the key tenet. Particular speech patterns often develop around things to the exclusion of the personal qualities of the speaker, as in

"I used to have a....."/"Yeah, friend of mine, he's got a "57.....", "last night I drank two....and a six pack of....","she was wearing..."," we did two....then a ....have you seen the new...""...how about those Forty-Niners?..." "Look what I got...""what do you think about American Idol?"

Empty, hollow words, bespeaking a personal void filled by the pursuit of things. Getting away from need for things is at least a start in allowing people to communicate and then once communicating, beginning to solve real problems in their home, community, nation and the world.

and Henry David Thoreau was the philosopher  :)

actually.eto nasa mind ko these days..

nung bata tayo gustong gusto natin magkabahay na malaki, sports cars at kung ano anong luxuries to "define" ourselves..kaso di natin nakikita, having these things and more and more stuff will be more of a burden dahil sa hidden costs of having these things na in the first place di naman kailangan..the more costs you need to pay off the more you have to work and earn to pay off these things disrupting your life balance...kungbaga hawak ka na ng material things mo sa leeg..

Youd be amazed how well it is to live with less stuff..tshirts..ayos na may 7 ka, shirts 7 din siguro 3 longsleeves pang formal ocassions..2 jeans 2 slacks.a set of socks and underwear..a watch..a phone..1 leather, 1 rubber shoes..  all of good quality.. would last you 2-3 years the most..buying only pag sale..and buying pag wasak or punit na yung item na yun...

Lately we got into the habbit of selling our babies old stuff, its good money, buy good quality items and reselling it wouldnt be a problem.. we have a practical couple who just had a baby..and would buy stuff from us, usually toys, and clothes..great savings for them.. and the sale money goes straight to our kids bank account..shes just 1yr old but you will be surprised how much we has saved up...probably better than most young urban professionals savings..

My wife and I promised that all our sideline, extra earnings, benta benta, raket, cash prizes, regalo etc. (gross) goes into our kids savings account. We even set a yearly quota for it..just for fun and the challenge of hitting that target..

Its a great habit..extra savings..and the funds can be used to fund other money making endeavors...investments and the likes..

Guys, if you guys are going to have kids, I urge you to really go the BREAST FEEDING way...I swear..it will save you thousands and thousands of pesos..and its good for the kids health and eq as well...SOBRANG LAKING SAVINGS to..kesa sa pagbili ng Formula..really!!

Develop a habit of Saving..no matter how small, disiplina din, this is where it all begins..if you have a substantial amount saved, when a good business or investment opportunity pops up...ready ka with some funds..thus helping you further your life..

I still dream big! I still aim and pursue for the bull's eye.
the thing is, di ako maluho.
what matters to me now is to give my family a good life, keep them healthy, provide for their education and needs,
the wants can wait, im teaching my kids how to be patient (pero mga in-laws ko panay ang bigay kahit na NO ang stand ko tsk)

Ako yata pinaka-"minimalist" sa tropa namin. Hehe nice thread.

1 simple nokia phone because I already have an android tablet that does my "mobile computing needs" so magiging redundant kung bibili pa ako ng uber gandang phone with amoled kahit na sobrang hype ako dito dati. hahaha. And I dont use my phone rin as a music player kasi I have a good portable music player.

That way mas ready sa emergency or urgent calls/texts. Dati kasi I had a 1 smart phone that I use para sa lahat, net, music, games, call and text pa. haha hindi bagay sa situation ko lalo pag nagbibiyahe.

Your thoughts?

good share..

somehow Ive been thinking...

ever notice during rush hour at the MRT, or LRT..subway etc..how crowded and packed like sardines..long lines everywhere..

similar din sa pigs, cattle, chickens..etc..all cooped up in their cages and pens..tapos didirect sila sa meat processing plant..siksikan, moving about with fences on both sides..

sigh...

iba talaga ang free range living..grow your own garden...live near the sea..open lawns...no deadlines..nobody giving you orders...not always catching time..focused on family friends..and relationships and experiences to be happy...instead of material crap..

Gearwise:

hoping to sell off the Jazzbass..and sana balikan ng mayari yung pinatago niyang squire 51 na binili niya sakin.. contemplating din of selling off my personal pedal collection..and just focus on the G3 and some drive pedals.. even thinking of selling off the roland edrums.. medyo dumadami na clutter sa house dahil sa toys at book ng chickiting...medyo hirap na controlin...

need to go through my clothes to see what can be disposed this time around..napaparami recently kasi may mga good quality clothes on sale na mahirap palampasin...retire ko nadin yung 4 year old sneakers ko..at upod na yung swelas..haha..got a cool new pair just this weekend...

for me, right now:

music related:
1 electric guitar, 1 acoustic guitar, 2 amps (a 5owatt tube quarter stack and an orange micro that I might sell soon...I don't use it)

2 boost ODs (been trying to sell 1 of then kaso walang kumukuha)

I want to get a nice digital 4-track recorder like the Tascam I used to own kaso ala pera...good thing there are multi-tracker apps na for smart phones :)

everyday stuff:
a pair of boots, a pair of sneakers & a pair of boat shoes. my plan is to just replace pag nasira na...pinaka-madaling masira ung sneakers kasi canvas lang. ung boots and boat shoes parehong leather. mas gumaganda at sumasarap suotin habang tumatagal. I don't have any shoes for formal situations nga lang.

yung rest, medyo marami pa, pero  trying to cut it down na rin para mas simple ang buhay.
