Muff
- strong bass, huge sound, great sustain.
- usually used with a clean amp.
- does not clean up well when rolling down your guitar's volume.
Fuzz face
- cutting, midrange and treble focused sound.
- usually used in front of an amp that is already breaking up (this smoothes-out the overall sound).
- cleans up very well when rolling down your guitar's volume.
so it depends on you.
if what you have is a clean amp, and rely on stepping on pedals for dirt, and you always keep your guitar volume on max, then go with the muff.
if you like to have a slightly dirty amp as a "base", and you like to cleanup your dirt by rolling down your guitar volume knob, then get the fuzzface.
of course, these are just generalizations. please do further reading on the variants of each pedal... especially on the tradeoffs of the fuzzface variants (germanium and silicone).
