Whose tone is venerated so much but YOU yourself hate?
« on: September 08, 2009, 04:15:15 PM »
I just seem not to understand why a lot like George Lynch's tone.  I mean, yeah, he used the same #38 (or was it #39) SIR modded Marshall SLT for the songs in Dokken's "Under Lock and Key" album as Slash did for Appetite for Destruction.  But there is something about the scooped and ultracompressed tone I do not like.

I also don't understand why there is so much tone-chasing for Lamb Of God's tone (especially from the Ashes of the Wake album) and while they are using those Mesa Mark IVs, they seem to dial out too much mids and use too much gain.

Well, JMO.

common answer.

Actually, that is due to the very bad recordings.  But I suggest listening to the latest remastered material, as in mixed for 5.1 surround.  You'll find out that the Machine Gun days were orgasmic...

I've heard the worst of metal tones (errr... Burzam) but LOG seems to have this over-saturated solidstate-like sound.  Maybe for modern metal, Chimaira and Divine Heresy are my favorites.  Between The Buried and Me has killer tones too.

hehe onga.. yung tone ng LOG parang mosquito buzz na ewan..

but i like the new tone on their new album. mas open na, probably because they've rolled back on the gain knob.. somehow...

well ako...

i used to think that dimebag's tone is the best.. partida solid state amps gamit niya.. lately napansin ko.. walang laman tone niya... yung nagpabigat lang talaga is yung riffs talaga saka yung doubling...

pero ang laki nung difference nung krank and randall niya... may 'muscle' talaga yung tone niya sa krank amps.. hehe.

odd...that sound 95% of the time comes from a Mark IV and is actually a staple amp head for the guys. the LOG boys do mix their sound a bit different to have more mids than your typical metal band.

never been a fan of Malmsteen's tone. a fan of his playing? yes. the tone is sterile sounding to me but that may be because i've never been a fan of the Marshall sound.

Ung tone ni Satriani mula nung nag-shift cya sa Peavy amps..dry & sterile for me. Mas gusto ko ung dati tone nya nung nka-Marshall pa cya, more round & warm.

Vai's, Yngwie's, Paul Gilbert's tones are NOT venerated. They hardly ever get mentioned. You hardly ever have people saying like "I want to get his tone"...

So...

To answer the question...

1. EVH's - I never liked his tone. And I will not ever wish to be able to nail that "brown sound". Yes, it's distinctive and all, but I hate it!
2. Satriani's - Good live tone, nothing stellar. But I never liked his (varied) tone in his studio albums. I have to note though that the tone for his "Crystal Planet" album is to me, his best.
3. Dimebag's - Your typical "scooped" sound, aka Angry swarm of bees. Never liked it. I could never understand why all these kids wants to nail that tone.

George Lynch's and Warren DeMartini's are what I call THE 80's tone. I love them.
And yes, I also love Yngwie's tone.

Most underrated tone: Blues Saraceno's.
Holy Grail tone: Slash's lead tone, Zakk Wylde's "No More Tears" rhythm tone.

Satriani
Dimebag

agee din ako about LOG. isa sa reasons kung bakit hindi ako fan masyado kasi ampangit talaga ng guitar sound nila. hindi ko ma-appreciate tuloy yung kanta.

Dimebag Darrell's - too trebly
Dave Mustaine's - too thin
