Formal Lessons vs. Self-Taught
« Reply #1 on: November 05, 2007, 09:49:36 PM »
i myself is a self thought drummer. basically because during those times that i started to like drumming we didnt have much for it and i didnt have any gears, actually not even a stick.. well i guess that something that made me like it more..thats whats nice in drumming u can hit ur legs and actually create a sound(hitting it harder for the snare sound etc.) i know allot of great drummers who didnt actually took formal lessons. so i guess its ok. i hope you guys share your ideas about this quote.

I had Formal lessons when I was 6-7 years old. Its kinda boring and all the lessons are all about notes, right hands and foot to use and timing. I admit I learned a lot from it specially in reading and creating grooves but for me if I was not taught a formal lesson I can still do what I can do right now on the drums, It's all about how you intergrate your mind in what you do. and its how you try to research new ideas. And sa dinami dami ng mga instuctional videos and other resources ngayon. kahit di na mag formal study yung mga bagong generation ng drummers kaya nilang maging class A drummers eh.
Just let your music fill the empty spaces in you. It's all you have so take advantage of it. It's a gift!

I'm  self taught drummer pero naglesson pa rin ako kay JP kasi sa opinion ko, everybody needs a professional help para mas ma-improve ang skills natin, oo magaling tayo sa self-taught skills natin, pero hindi ba tayo mas gagaling kung may magtuturo sa atin????

afaic no one is self thought unless gifted ka tlga.
lahat gagawa ng paraan para matutong mag drums and that will
start from watching other drummers, viewing instructional drum vids,
private drum lessons (or hanging out a lot with a good drummer para maka libre ng free lessons hehe which i did a lot during my beginning years at minsan ginagawa ko pa rin dahil di matiis mag-share ng mga kapwa drummers sa totoo lang kung ano man natutuhan nila lately which is the beauty of it all), drum clinics, books, mags and now the INTERNET. so there is always someone/something making you learn it.

Of course the best tlga yung nakaupo ka sa drums tapos may biglang
magagawa ka na di mo dati nagagawa or parang sa tingin mo ikaw
pa lang ang nakakagawa nuon so yun ang para kin magic moments
na purely self thought tlga imo hehe.

Self taught din po ako, but i'm currently taking up drum lessons para alam ko rin magbasa ng note at makakuha ng ibang techniques. @soundtech, tama ka laking tulong din ng forum ng pinoy drums :-D

Im a self-taught, and in fact, didn't even have a drumkit to play when I started. Wala ding mentor.
Kaya na develop ang pagiging open-handed ko dahil wala talaga akong idea kung ano yung "standard".
Hindi rin drummer o style ng music ang nag inspire sa'kin para mag drums. Yung idea lang na pagsabay-sabayin yung apat na limbs para makabuo ng rhythm ang nag-intriga sakin para mag aral akong mag drums.
Siguro dahil kasali ako sa ati-atihan sa community namin nung maliit pa ko, saka influence ng pagiging breakdancer ko nung 12 years old ako.

Of course, if given a chance, I would like to take formal lesson especially regarding note-reading. Malaking bagay yun dahil gusto ko mag compose ng drum solo katulad ni Neil Peart. Saka kelangan ko din i-revise yung mga techniques ko - which I believe - is possible only with the help of a drum master.  :-)

i enrolled in Yamaha a couple of years ago to learn how to read notes.

but as for technique I learned off from vids, watching gigs and observing what works best for me and the type of music I play.

pareho ginawa ko.

sa ngayon, back to basics. nakikisabay sa vids ng rudiments sa youtube. ambilis rin kasi nung gumawa nun e!

i was self taught :). and happy with it..
i think that self taught drummers are more versatile..
since they depend more on raw skill and practice more than
notes and arent limited to several beats.. they learn from watching
drummers and learn a lot from advice.. i dont have a drumset and
ddnt take formal lessons.. sticks and pillows lang :))..

i am self taught din, and im very happy with it. i can read and write na rin drum notation but di ganun kagaling, iba pa rin talaga yung may formal lesson and wish ko lang na makapag- aral pa sana ako, sa drum notes ko lang kasi natutunan yung mga jazz, triplet, shuffle, samba, rock polyrhytm, and syncopation na talagang anlaki ng naitulong sa akin, right now i continue researching sa youtube, my attitude kasi when i was in the showband 1 year ago, lagi ako nagtatanong sa mga drummer na ka alternate namin, mas ok yung nagtatanong kaysa nagmamalaki. on my opinion lang po ah, walang pinakamagaling na drummer, lahat ng drummer may kanya kanyang galing at creativity. and lastly GOD gave me this talent, and i found freedom in jesus christ.. weird ba mga tsong? that's the truth, godbless......................

It's nice to be self-taught. I myself started with it and lived through years of drumming just by learning on my own.

I'd suggest though to also take formal lessons.

after a decade of drumming, I felt that i hit a plateau and there are things I cannot learn on my own so I sought the help of sir Regalado and my drumming skills leaped and my understanding developed more. I'm not saying I'm a kick pwet drummer at this point. My point is, there were things in my playing that greatly improved because I never noticed I needed help in those areas before.

IMHO, we can only do and learn so much and we will all reach a level where only our minds can take us. having someone speak into your drumming mind is something one should definitely consider.

I think both formal lessons and being self-taught are good.  Whichever works best for us.  And the most important thing is we are learning and improving and developing.

I am a self-taught drummer.  Most of the things I know and can do right now were worked out by doing research, listening to plenty of music, watching drummers (whether live or on video), and reading a lot of Modern Drummer magazines.  And I just have that kind of open-minded, positive attitude.  I'm so passionate with drumming, I'm just determined to learn and get better.

It's also good to have lessons from a credible drum teacher.  If not lessons, at least it's great to have a mentor.  That mentor should be someone who can guide you to become a better drummer and musician.  And he/she should be somebody whom you can easily approach and seek for advices in case you need any help.

In my case, I had lessons with Mar Dizon back in 2002.  This was my very first series of drum lessons, after being self-taught since I first picked up a pair of sticks in 1992.  I'm forever grateful with my sessions with Senyor Mar.  He helped me clean up my playing and correct my bad habits.  As a result, my groove has greatly improved.

I still look up to Mar.  I am also grateful to great cats like Jun Relalado, his son Junjun Regalado, and Benjie "Bagets" Mendez, whom I all look up to as mentors and brothers in music and drumming.  They have helped me in so many ways.

Any learning method can do.  The most important thing is we're learning and we're making some progress.  And we should never stop learning.

self-taught din ako count me in.. accidental nga lang ang pagkatuto ko magdrums kasi that time kailangan talaga ng drummer sa school namin. All i know was the basic 4/4 signatures and simple effortless rudiments lang. Until I got serious with gears, and with some everyday practices, ayun, eto na ako ngayon hehe. But still if I have time, I would like to have formal lessons na rin (preferably on Sir JP )
