Guitar playing technique and approach?
« on: February 03, 2014, 03:16:27 PM »
Open chords at power chords lang ba ginagamit nyo or nagamit din kayo ng triads and other stuff?

Share your knowledge naman guys! :D

Nice one. Simple lang kasi ako.. minsan kasi wala kameng keys, so plucking na open chords madalas. At kailangan ko talaga ng Capo. hehe. kahit key of G which is kaya namang gawin kahit walang capo, nagcacapo parin ako para lang maiba yung tunog with key of D pattern. with some reverbs and delays on. hehe.

Di ako nagmamabilis na lead part. or flashy. Medyo takaw atensyon kasi yung mga flashy lines lalo sa mababagal na kanta.. 2 overdrives on, with delays.. minsan analog setting para dark, minsan dotted 8th plus quarter note combo..hehe..

Mine goes with open chords and usual chord stuffs when acoustic or even electric. I also play triads, octaves and inversions to add flavor. Pag hindi ko masyado siprado yung kanta I improvise and add lines na approprate sa key ng song, same with leads and I tend it to be close to the record. Most of the time nagiisa lang akong guitar player and I cover a lot of ground so my delays and reverbs are always on to add space. There are times may keys and acoustic akong kasama which makes my life easier. I also do a lot of lead lines lalo na pag lincoln brewster yung song, Old hillsongs like Reaching for you, Planetshakers this is how we overcome etc. For my part I need to understand almost everything etc since I need to be flexible in our group as a Rhythm/lead guitar. :)

From standard open chords to power chords to major and minor triads to octaves to major and minor thirds, anything goes as long as its pleasing to the ears and of course lots and lots of delays

Yes bro. Exactly. If you know your pentatonic scale. Just look for the Root - minor 3rd - Fifth for minor chords and Root - major 3rd and Fifth for major chords. For example: Aminor : Root - A, Minor 3rd - C, Fifth - E.  If you combine them together as a chord they will form a A minor triad. Kahit anung note start ok lng as long as you have the 3 notes together. ECA-ACE-EAC etc  They are all over the neck kaya madami kang magagawa na triad chords and can experiment as well. :)

Minsan I try to play arpeggios using notes sa pentatonic box shapes, parang sa concept ng CAGED, with matching delay for ambient effect. Di rin naman kasi kailangan ng 3 note per string scale runs sa praise and worship kaya single-string major scale lead lines na lang ginagawa ko, tapos kapag upbeat ang kanta, I try to inject some bluesy pentatonic licks para mabigyan ng kulay yung music. Alalay lang din ako sa volume ko, I give my best in being sensitive sa level ng sound ko, I just want to blend with the band para maganda tugtog then increase my volume if needed (for some lead lines and solos). :)

chord inversions mostly! perfect for support and filling in the gaps! and perfect for instrumentals as well, I generally don't like doing line solos (mainly because i'm not good at it), but I use chord inversions and stack the overdrive to get my guitar stand out from the rest.. it makes the instrumental more, ear-friendly for conservative pastors at the same time you can rock it out hard like doing a solo, after all you are only doing "chords"

lots and lots of delay!
You don't choose the guitar, it chooses you.

If at any point in time you cannot afford a particular guitar, don't play it. If it chooses you, you have to buy it.  If you simply can't beg, steal, or borrow, you will eventually die of a broken heart..

Depends. Tapos sa slow worship songs, fill in the blanks lang, tapos minsan stomp on the dirt para ma-accentuate yung force ng song.

ako most of the time improvised solo's. lalo na sa mga kanta ni Lincoln Brewster. Hindi ko kasi gusto ung attack ng mga solos nya, it feels like a guitar duel hahaha.

Best guide para makapulot ka ng technique na lagi mong magagamit is knowing your playing style first, then acquire a correct guitar tone that suites you then discover, just play around the frets you'll discover something new.

Simple lang ung chords kasi pag naka DADGAD, okay pang rhythm. na enjoy ko din sya sa personal worship time ko, kasi i can focus more on the actual worship than moving my hands across the fretboard. :)
