RATM doesnt sound thin either...

RATM isn't a metal band.

the TS did explicitly mention metal.

-*-

i'm a bass player ... and i have played death metal in a 1 guitarist set-up who does guitar solos.

the best thing to do is make parts that fit... it depends on the situation but usually, a fast bass guitar with the cymbals ringing all the time can cover for the "space." however, there are limitations. if you are patient you can listen to my ex-band's song, God Slaughter Campaign:

http://www.myspace.com/ageofbelial/music/songs/god-slaughter-campaign-59356466

when you get to the guitar solo at 2:57 it still fits because the bass guitar and kick drum are fast and the open hi-hat fills up the sonic spectrum ... at 3:13 we set the band to drop, as to hi-light the "singing lead guitar" HOWEVER, at 3:29 i cant help but feel the sound dropped, although the lead guitar player's tone did help compensate because he was using a hell-lot of gain.

in that band, we never really wanted another guitarist... just because the riffs were hard, it takes me 3 days to a week to learn them, and the song sequences were crazy. having another guitar player in that band would be massive head ache really.

anyway, for it to work in a live setting, your bass player has to have pretty nice gear to have the same effect.

-*-

you can also listen to Executioner, cause it has a pretty nice solo, where i did a "wherever i may roam" kinda tempo for the guitar solo...

its hard being a single guitarist...I'm currently in an all-female band playing old school thrash/death metal (morbid angel, testament stuff) and a solo guitarist...dami mo kelangan ibahin na arrangements especially if the song your covering has 2 guitars/guitarists...your bassist has to compensate for the rhythm especially during solos..another disadvantage is minsan nabubutas/manipis un tunog..so i have to always use a splitter (2 amps)..
and the biggest disadvantage is when you make a mistake (which i always do)....sobrang halata hehe

True. it's hard to be alone. but all these years, i've found my own way to settle things. and with a lot of team work from me and my band we get by pretty well. specially my bassist. he provides the hidden fourth member with his superb chording techniques on his 4-string.
I love The Extra X!!!

ive been playing as a "single" guitarist for a few months now, there are a few advantages and disadvantages of being a "loner"..

advantages -

- if guitar driven ang music nyo, you have almost "full" creative control over your songs, i mean ung mga riff na maiisip mo lang ang magiging foundation ng kanta. so that means mas ma aapply mo ideaas mo.

- if mejo nakakalito na ang up and down speed picking mo, since "single" guitarist ka, it wont matter kahit may konting picking ka na namimiss lalo na kung live, kasi mag isa ka lang and since compositions nyo naman ang tinutugtog nyo, the audience wont notice, as oppose kapag dalawa kayo, halata pag di kayo sabay sa mga bagsakan..

- less arguments

- less people coming in late sa practice

- balanse visually sa stage, mas maluwag at makaka headbang ka ng husto unlike pag ka 5 piece kayo, mejo masikip.

disadvantages -

- wala yung "brain storming" factor between guitarists, sa pag gawa ng kanta, again only if guitar driven ang music nyo.

hope this helps

i used to play in a metal band nung highskul, isa lang ako... ang maganda kasi don palit palitan mo man riff mo gawan gawan mo man ng kung ano ano okay lang kasi ikaw lang naman yun. ang disadvantage naman pag guitar solo, nawawala yung bigat at wala kang ka share sa idea sa pag susulat ng riffs

All you need is a good Bassist and Drummer.  "In the PoCket Playing". Groove and timekeeping should always lock. Now you can shred all the way..

Single guitarist in a metal band? Psyopus. Single guitarist? Me and Him Call it Us. Be creative/angular with your material and the songwriting will fill in the gaps if you're good at it. :)

It's heavy metal fatigue.                                                                                                      Postlude.

advantage: I get to play the guitar parts of our songs differently live in any way I want long as I lock with time

+no disagreements with chords when writing songs LOL

disadvantage: so far..... wala  :-D

we recently added another guitarist in the band, and many have commented our live sound has thickened significantly.
