Starting Guitarist - Need your opinion!
« on: February 02, 2018, 03:41:24 PM »
Hello Guys,

I'd like to ask for your help/opinion/tips. I'm a guitarist in who knows more than the basics, but probably not enough to be good. :/ I just like to ask how did you guys get to where you are right now? Ultimately, I wanted to join a band/sessions, but I'm a bit scared na hindi ako skilled enough. Do you guys have any tips or stories on how you started?

Thanks!
If there are encounters, there are partings as well

All of the great local guitar players I know got to where they are by learning songs by ear and not via the technologies we have (tabs, videos etc). While they may be known to perform one type of genre, they listen to other forms of music and instruments as well. Playing with other people (one on one jams, band scenarios etc) helped make them into who they are also. Most importantly, they never gave up. Hope that helps.  :)

Bro, ako i started early mga grade 5 ata ako nun or 4. first band ko was in grade 6, tumugtog kame sa isang back to school program. Metallica enter sandman kame nun, ang naalala ko nun is sigawan mga tao, "uwi na kayo, hinahnap na kayo ng nanay nyo" hahahaha! then intro came then cheering follows. hahaha! but then college come, real world problems. eto ako ngaun balik grade 1. Starting all over again. If you love doing it, do it. Im in my middle aged now, learning to play ulet, theories and stuff, recording.

Just play! Much better with friends in a band.

just sharing. :)

late 1990's...PnE's debut album came out. They had this song "Nanakaw ang Wallet Ko". So naghanap ako ng tab, G-D-Am, G-D-C tapos yung guitar solo inaral ko. Me and my friends used to sing along to that tune (and other popular OPM tunes as well during that time).

Eh katunog nya Knocking On Heaven's Door...so i also played along with that tune (adjust lang ng position kasi half step down ito). Then i started to learn scales tapos nalaman ko na pwede yung G Major Scale dun sa dalawang kanta na yun so sinubukan ko mag practice ng scales over that song. Mga 3 notes per string habang tumutugtog yung kanta...basta makabisado ko lang yung scale.

Nung nakipag jam ako for that same song...hindi ako nag lead, rhythm lang muna. Pero i really tried na pasok sa timing yung bagsak ng chords kasi sa simula..nakakalito talaga. Then sinubukan ko na gawin yung lead note for note...then after a few years, kaya ko na sariling solo.

My advice would be...
a. Hanap ka ng ka tugtugan. Kung wala...try to learn songs and sing along with them. Singing along with songs will train your ear and vocal chords. hehe
b. Get good at rhythm guitar playing. Lead guitar can come later

join a band that is related to your influence. after joining, start exploring more because along the way, it will help your band as well.

throwback story that is also related: Slight background sa music, nagstart ako as trombone player sa isang marching band sa lugar namin. Then I saw kids around my age na naggigitara sa school, so nakitropa para makahiram ng gitara, started listening sa mga OPM bands noon, then started to explore guitar more after learning the basics. Make story short, here I am, still suck in playing but loves what I'm doing.

Making music is about passion. Hindi ito competition. It's not about "sino pinakamalupet na banda sa eksena" kind of thing.

Don't worry about a thing,. every little thing is gonna be alright! -Bob Marley

Hey CJ! One way to look at it instead of thinking you're not good enough is assess what needs to be accomplished or what needs to be done to meet your target requirement. Whether that be you playing in a band or just jamming along a backing track flawlessly. Alamin mo kung ano ba yung kailangan mong aralin for that specific goal.

Like in my case, I never aimed to be a good cover guitarist. Never really liked playing other people's tune. Instead, I aspired to be able to translate those melodies in my head and transpose them on the fretboard.

WOAH! Thanks so much guys! Ang fun ng anecdotes nyo and thank you so much sa tips! I'll try to apply these as I start again. Medyo busy lang sa work, pero sabi nyo nga, kung gusto talaga e magagawan ng paraan.

Right, dapat intentional - thanks for the reminder!

RE: Jamming partners - may mga ka-jams ako, but usually sa church lang, and to be really honest, narealize ko na mas gagaling ako pag hindi ako yung pinaka experienced sa band, but right now, puro newer than me yung kasama ko so medyo  na-stump yung growth ko (I think).

if you can find a good teacher -- absolutely take it. maganda pa din ang structured learning (just make sure ok ung teacher and covered ang requirements mo)... if self learning, start with the basics -- like learn to read notes or tabs, learn your chords, practice your strumming, picking, and jam along with your fave tunes... if shredding naman goals mo, learn to use a metronome, learn to play SLOWLY, know your scales and practice practice practice! most importantly -- shut out any negative influences or people -- and syempre enjoy what youre doing! goodluck!

study and practice.

study and practice.

study and practice.

study and practice.

study and practice.

and lastly, keep yourself grounded and be humble. your skills will speak for itself and then people would want to be in a band with you.

and really lastly, study and practice more.

Agree ako about building a good foundation in rhythm - the super shredding can come after that!

Listen to as much guitar music as you can, as many genres as you'd like. This way you can broaden your horizons on what you want to do.

Write songs. Dito mo makikita yung application ng mga inaral mo e. I liken this to looking at the mirror - you'd never know what you look like if you don't look at the mirror. So get some jam tracks, and record yourself to get an idea. In time, this may be your avenue to writing your own songs. I'm saying this mostly from an instrumental guitar enthusiast's perspective.

try to tap your foot like a metronome everytime you play.. consistently, and make it audible, not just a cool habit..

this one helped me a lot with my playing.

While others might find that covering songs is not their cup of tea, not everyone can be creative especially if you lack the knowledge on theory like me.
But if you are gonna cover songs, then better to learn it by ear. I used to resort to tabs and when youtube came, video lessons, but I realized that you'll have better retention when you discovered it on your own.
If you'll join a band, be yourself and don't be scared to disappoint your bandmates. don't try to be somebody you're not. We learn more from failure than success. So have fun
Lastly, invest on good gear. Price is subjective and what's good for me might not be good for you/others but what's important is you feel good about what you play and it inspires you.
It's a journey, I mainly play blues now (SRV, Hendrix, John Mayer) but 15 years ago we were covering Blink 182, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit
