Overrated: Zvex. Yes they are unique sounding but I know only of a handful of songs that have used their pedals. The Box of Rock/Metal is probably the most useful of them with the Fuzz Factory close behind.
Underrated: Boss pedals. Seriously, too many people are dismissing Boss immediately without listening to the pedals in favor of the boutiques. Many Boss pedals are really good sounding and can hold their own in tours and stage abuse. Easily replaced also. I can't say the same for many of the boutique brands.

Zvex pedals are overrated because they are expensive. Most of them are pretty useful namely the octane III, SD2n1, wah probe...etc.
If only they were mass produced :-(

overrated pedals: zvex fuzz factory - it has a lot of sounds but none that i have really found useable. it has a treble bite that gets annoying. (take note i used this with a tele with single coils)
underrated pedals: old DOD pedals -- FX10 is an awesome clean booster, Phasor 201 and 490 are very nice, warm sounding phasors, Buzz Box and Punkifier are thick fuzz pedals.
Ibanez 10 series pedals -- basically 9 series pedals in a different casing. the TS10 is a nice "more transparent" overdrive, the FC10 is a great RAT clone. etc

Yep i agree with you, I think boss pedals are underrated and now that boutique pedals are booming(I think) some leave their boss pedals behind. And IMO boss pedals are very well built and sound good, and they have a consistency when it comes to the sound of their pedals.

well basic trouble na nakikita ko sa MT-2 is when you set your clean sound on you amp then okay na sayo tas pagtapak mo sa MT-2 eh ampanget na.. na hindi mo na matweak sa gusto mo.. lalo na pag medyo bright as setting mo sa clean tone amp tas pagtapak mo sa mt-2 eh masyado na siyang manipis at matalas..
the MT-2 is good kung puro distorted talaga and tugtugan mo..but changing from clean then to MT-2. medyo mahirap lalo na pag di ka pa sanay..the MT-2 is a very good pedal sa rhyhtm playing for me,lalo na when using Power chords and single note riffs, pero sa solo, i prefer overdrives pa din..

underrated: Boss DS-1. underrated as a blast-your-semi-dirty-amp-into-gonzo-distortion overdriver. its got plenty of clean output and is one of the fattest ODs around with the distortion knob at zero, tone at 9:00 to 11:00, and the volume knob past 1:00.

Underrated(I think): The EXH metal muff, I've read a lot of bad reviews about this pedal. For me this is one of the most versatile pedals that I've used, and yeah i admit that with bad settings it's tonesucker but when you get the right adjustments for this baby then you're onto something.

g2d pedals arent getting much love either. the custom overdrive killed my higher gain gas, never fails me in any scenario. the high filter tone control is something most pedals should have, the eq'ing becomes a no-brainer. its the only thing that has stood up to my higher gain fusiony needs coz its phat and clear with a very even/ round harmonic texture. i love it more than most of the tube amp od i've tried so far. cuts like a knife. a very fat knife.

Agree with you guys that the metal zone is underrated. Try to name it as your favorite pedal in a gear forum, and you'll probably get a hater or two, especially in this day and age of bowteeek. :-D
Its parametric mid EQ knobs are powerful tools, and it's the reason why it was so popular back in the day. Set to some low gain settings, it becomes a versatile overdrive pedal or booster (it isn't just a metal distortion!). And nowadays, there are a lot of mods you can do to it. For starters, if you find it sounds too 80's with its nasal midrange, just take out two capacitors for a basic mod.
Ok. Putting on flame suit now. Be gentle on me please. :-D

overrated: ahm...i don't know but there was a time that the boss SD-2 became a hype dito sa forum. then some sellers affix "rare" when they have one on the classifieds. i've own a couple of this model and all i can say is i cant see any significant difference sa sound when compared with other boss od pedals. Plus lang siguro yung additional boost nya. anyway, just an opinion guys. :wink:

oh yeah! the micro delay aint getting much love either. tried one, was jonesing for one too.
@maniacally_cool- i kept the fx-17 with me for a long time, unloaded it and nearly acquired another, but i'm happy now with my area 51 loaded wah.
@xelalien- yup! arion is damn good. i got a great tone using an arion distortion through a trademark amp one time, the 1st time i got to jam with deltaslim. and an arion overdrive saved my hide the 1st time i jammed with the bluerats.
@ianz- mismo rib ang bi fet preamp. had one with me too, its a great jazz boost.

hehe, same here! still have my SDI-1 Distortion (actually 3xmodded by BAMF)... love it with my single coil-equipped guitar.
btw, I also have a FX17 :) also a keeper... hmmm I'll try to tweak those trimpots :)

But yeah the DL-4 IMO is one hell of a pedal, maybe some underrate it because they try to get the classic delay out of it(hence people turn to the nova delay) but the real forte of the DL-4 is in the features like the modulate, sweep, etc.

SCOD. tried one, pero.... di na lang ako mag-dedescribe further. :-D Tonebone series: Trimode, Plexitube, Hot British. it's supposed to be marketed as a tube pedal, but i can't hear any 'tube' sound in them, lalo na yung 'tube' feel. theyre good in their own right as a distortion pedal, but definitely for me its not tube sounding.

MISMO! The usual problems from what I've heard are the footswitches, but I think with proper care the DL4 would last for a very long time(It's like a tank, very heavy and big). But still, I'm getting one. :-D

Because the reissues remove much of the mids. You should try the triangle or ram's head Big Muffs and you'll find out why Gilmour uses one as his main distortion.

I have no problem about with the old muffs and already know its differences and all about its history matagal na. thats why Im pinpointing the new US versions. Na disappoint kasi ako sa kanya nung binili ko about 4 years ago, but if may mabibilhan ng lumang muff , why not, or vinatage na fuzz face dallas arbiter pag nanalo sa lotto. :-D

I agree. Compressors are one of the most underrated pedals.

before anything else, i know that overrated and underrated is all relative.. but this is just my opinion so.. la lang. haha
overrated? im not sure.. hehe. ahhh, ill just say the line 6 spider 3 75watt amp. For me, it's there so you'll be familiar with the different various tones. so, i sold it and went for analog stuff. :)
underrated? hmmm, i didnt see anyone mentioning the jemini here. I love the sound.. It has really crystal clear definition for both green and red distos with the right settings. YOu can get vais sound. :) It's just amazing. haha. Gets a little noisy lang when drive is all the way up, which leads me to the next underrated pedal..
the boss ns-2. :) It's really great. haha. Keeps things sounding nice and clean. Hardly any change in tone.
Satchurator. This one's pretty good too. Much higher gain than the jemini. i love the sound when the tone's less than 10 o clock and maxed out gain.
MORLEY bad horsie!!! now this is the real screaming demon.

I think it really all boils down to a guitarist preference and taste regardless of its price tag or specs. All gears and gadgets are there to help guitar players do what they do and sound how they sound in the EASIEST possible manner. This is why it's really hard for me to say what's under-rated and over-rated. :-)

overrated: some boutique peds are too hyped. i had a barber trifecta once. kulang sa oomph in my opinion but then again the pedal art na mala-hippie shoulda been a sign for me. even the catalinbread v8 fuzz was much too gimmicky (and uber small to the point na it's in danger of flipping) sounding for live use -- though it's great for making your neighbors go crazy hehe
underrated: some of the boston peds are pretty useful (e.g. EQ and dist are pretty good) . you just have to know which ones are crap. tulad nung mga modulation nila. my gawd yung iba naka todo na lahat uber nipis pa rin parang walang nangyayari sa tone
OT QUESTION: has anyone tried those ASHTON pedals? i stepped into a music store sa cubao yesterday and saw them. the delay was very cheap pero dehins ko binili kasi ala pa akong nabasang mga review. hmmm, mods should i start another thread about this para hindi OT?

I was gonna say the dano cool cat TOD is under rated din pero its widely acknowledged to be a one of the best ODs under $50. I think the boss OD3 doesn't get enough praise either. its one of the pricey-er mass produced ODs out there.

the fact that you have to pick the "right amp" (whatever) means these pedals arent really versatile which is part of the criteria (for sure right?) of a good pedal. ergo, not really underrated, no.

Bakit kasi 12VDC ang psu at baliktad ang Input/Output?
You can easily nail those modern detuned chugs even through a very clean and bright amp like a Fender Twin. Kinda muddy if you use with already big-bottom amps but it can sound great through combos. Also works great as a hard rock dirt box.

So... I would rather rate a pedal as suitable with my specific amp and guitar rather than using the terms "over-rated" and "under-rated."

I really liked that pedal. For me it's realyl underrated. What amp(s) did you use it with?
Tried it with a couple of fender, laney, and marshall amps. Not my cup of tea really...since i compared it with a boss OD-1 and OD-3 and preferred them more than the badmonkey. That's just me though, prolly haven't heard of the true potential of the bad mokey or other pedals that matches it better than what i've heard. :|

What pedals do you match it with, or amp(s)? Cause I used it only as a booster and nothing else, dint like the sound of the pedal alone.
Fender 1972 or was it a 73? Bassman 50w head with a 4x12 Marshall (failed on a Yamaha 4x12) Carvin Legacy head with a Legacy 2x12 and a 4x12 Marshall JCM900 50w 1x12 Marshall 8040 Marshall 6100 LM (not mine)
Pedals - there were a lot. I swapped out and paired it with drives such as the Valveboy and the Emma RF1 (failed with it, too muddy). As a stand alone, it worked well with the amps mentioned above.

I had the 10th Anniversary edition. But at that time, I was using it on a Marshall 9040 solid state amp. It was OK at 18v. Haven't tried it on tube amps. Yet. :-D

It depends how you see it.
I think Boss Pedals are GAH. Same with Digitech. Given people praise them. I'd pick pinoy boutique over them.
I think MXR and EHX pedals are SAKTO for the price. Mass produced, true bypassed, and affordable. Underrated since people favor Boss and the like over them.
But then I realized that if you're an audiophile, might as well go for GOLD.

kung konti lang naman, say 3-5 TBP pedals, very very minimal lang yung tone suck nun. but if you're running long cables into dozens of TBP pedals, i'ts good to have a buffered pedal at the beginning and end of the board. I prefer a pedal with a good buffer, instead of a TBP pedal. :-)

+1 saka kanya kanya naman ng taste sa tunog, malay mo yung maganda sa kanila panget naman sayo tas yung maganda sayo panget naman sa kanya.. hahaha... lahat din ng pedals mekapangitan kasi ala naman perpektong pedal diba. sa way nalang nang paggamit nagkakatalo :-D

I think boss ac-2 is underrated. It's a good simulator.

everyone loves it. but its just not for me. id go for the TurboRat anytime of the day kung may pera ako.
the Blues Mood however, sounds sweet to me. that and a decent amp to plug it in and were good to go.
Hahahahha I love how the Black Secret gets really close to the Rat variants; my ears probably aren't as sophisticated as most.
That said ang hassle lang sa Mooer is how they use those flimsy toggle switches. I've had problems with those before. I usually end up changing the setting because I nudge the switch when I step on it sa gig. Another time naman I threw my Pitchbox papunta sa bed pero tumalbog sa floor and the toggle switch broke off.
