1. House Equalizer 10 band and up
2. Compressor/Limiter
3. BBE Sonic maximizer to adjust phase differences.
4. Optionally, a reverb unit for vocal performances

Those are just about the essentials in my mind.

for me,  the following are essential gears:

1) DBX driverack pa/pa plus or even higher models such the 260, 480 or 4800 which can serve as the 'complete processor' between your mixer and the amps.

driverack pa plus

2) DBX 1231 or 231 dual 31 band graphic equalizers if you opt for added 'quick fix' just in case you decide to equalize your f.o.h. and typical monitors.

1231

231

3) DBX 1046 quad compressor/limiter for selected channel or even group inserts if available

in my opinion kelangan meron ka parin another EQ. mainly for quick adjustments.
and sometimes kc ndi lng 2 or three way systems ginagamit..most  probably for crossover, limiter, purposes lng and drive rack...

and im 100 percent sure.. sound engineers like that 'analog' feel na nagpipihit or nagaadjust ng sliders. :-D

you may change the driverack pa/pa plus to behringer dcx2496 for a low cost loudspeaker management controller:

and for a value for money yet effective 4-channel compressor/gate,  you may try the samson s.com4:
