Open-Handed, Ambidextrous Approach To Drums
« on: August 20, 2006, 11:16:54 AM »
Billy Cobham,Carter Beauford,at yung author ng librong "The New Breed".

Tambolero,ILAHAD MO!! :x

-DOM FAMULARO! (grabe kapangalan ko! Dominic ako eh! hhehe).

he's shifted from trad grip to open handed playing.. check www.vicfirth.com and to dom famularo's cyber lessons!

Advantage is, you are not locking an arm when you keep time in hi hats..You're gonna lead using the left hand thus opening the right arm and giving easy access to different toms and cymbals.. pero xmpre mganda ren na you got 2 hands na pdeng mag lead either left or right.. Un na yung ambidextrous playing! Ambidextrous is, according to me, is being able to play or lead with either 2 hands nga! hehehe..

take Carter Beauford for example.. sometimes naglleft xa, sometimes nagrright.. sa hats nga lang.. kasi nsa left niya ung dalawang ride niya eh.. (i like his Flattop Ride! hehehe) watch his videos.. ganda ng combinations.. Try finding his DVD of Under The Table and Drumming.. watch Ants Marching! heheheh Petmalu!

my two cents!

cheers!!

The New Breed - by Gary Chester.

I think open-handed playing adds a wider dimension to our playing.  And with both left and right hands working hard and with dexterity, it opens up many more creative and musical possibilities.

I want to work on open-handed playing someday, maybe when I have a nice second ride cymbal mounted on my left, para ma-inspire ako lalo.  I can already do straight-ahead 4/4 grooves.  I can't do the more advanced ones yet.

Will Kennedy and Gorden Campbell are two more examples of drummers who apply open-handed playing.

playing open handed doesnt really present an advantage even for ambidextrous people like me  :(

even if i can lead with either hands, i've been training myself to play right handed coz

a. that's the way the other guy does it
b. dont want to change setup everytime you play with somebody else's kit
c. difficult to translate stickings
b. i can eat right handed with a spoon and fork, left hand if using one utensil (chop sticks too) but its too damn confusing for me if you give me a fork and a knife.

sooo i still play right handed up to now, i started playing open handed three months ago but its driving me crazy. i found that its more of a practice for mental conditioning and telling yourself to break a habit than physical training. well i skipped the physical training part since i dont have to develop weak limbs

Thanks for your uncommon response bro!

"Natural Evolution"

Ngayon, dahil siguro nag mature na ako as a musician, medyo Jazz fusion at World Music naman ang venture ko...Reggae, Afro-cuban,Brazilian,New Orleans,Afro-beat,Tahitian,etc...DITO!

Napansin nyo bang mas magaling ang mga basketball player na ambidextrous kesa dribble at shoot lang using only one of his limbs?!?

  Yeah Man!

**Check nyo yung post ko under "MURANG DRUMS" ni Marko.

hi, i'm a newbie when it comes to open handed/left lead drummin, ve'been trying it out for a few months now, not that good at all but im getting there...anyway, i still practice on a right-handed kit and do fills/rolls the same way i did when im leading with my right. its only when im on the hats that i try to lead with my left, thats it. i dunno if other open-handers do it differently though.

 :)

I play open-handed since I started drumming. Although I lead with my left hand, my cymbal setup remains the same with right-handed kit.(ride on the right, crash and hats on the left)

Actually, Im an ambidexter.I lead with my left, but still play the ride with my right hand.

I use double-strokes and paradiddles to most of my fills and 16ths..I seldom play single strokes specially on fast tempos.

It doesnt matter whether your fill starts with your left, or right hand, just make sure you hit the cymbals on 'one'.
You will soon discover how to create your personal "sticking" thru practice, and problem solving...(In fact,Im not aware which of my hand starts a fill for most of the time!) It has become a subconscious reaction to music.

...Pakiramdaman na lang yan! hee he he!

occasionally i would switch to open hand or left hand riding on the hi-hat with basic 8th note beats. sometimes i would fool around with some shuffles if the tempo is slow enough for it.
with fillls will lead on my right.

theres also one trick sa open handed eh... i dont know kung gsto nyo tong idea na to...

like this.. create a groove (snare/hat) that.. any.. ung may mga ghost notes.. in a right handed position... tapos do a open hand .. without modifying anything from the right hand groove that you made...

ala lng... wala akong magawa eh... share lng...

being able to play open handed is a must in my opinion.

sarap no!?

Thomas Lang- Creative Control- may part dun na left hand and lead nya while his right hand does the comping.
Stanton Moore-Modern Approach to New Orleans drumming- May part din na parang open-handed ang approach.

Just master all the rudiments and always try to practice with either hand doing the lead/comping.If you want to sound different from the rest of us,drummers, IMHO,you should try to create your own sticking patterns.
Even for cover songs,a simple imitation of the groove is enough. You dont have to play "exactly" the same.

Checkout these open-handed drummers;

Simon Phillips
Billy Cobham
