I always thought Albert King favored tube amps more as much as many blues players do. Damn, that's some nasty solid-state tone he's got! :-o
Any great 'S-S' cats you have in mind? I've read from a guitar mag that Phil Collen (Def Leppard) favored them too.
-
BB with his Lab series L5 Amp of course!
Mike Stern uses an old Yamaha g100 ..
and how about them guitar players using the Roland Jazz chorus amps...
musta na Markv!
-
Reb Beach? Actaully he uses a Hartke Bass Amp head. Only for his clean sounds.hehehe

Uy, ngayon ko lang nalaman yung L5 at BB King ah. Kala ko Twin Reverb gamit nya lagi.
Oo si Mike Stern pa pala, although nabasa ko sa ilang guitar mags na one of the worst tones of all time sya, hehehe. But then again it's all subjective. :-D
Oks naman ako pareng Sonny. :-)
Reb Beach? Actaully he uses a Hartke Bass Amp head. Only for his clean sounds.hehehe
Yeah, Hair Metal era.
-
Allan Holdsworth used a solid state amp for a long time before endorsing Hughes & Kettner, right? :)
-

Oo, Yamaha SS amp ata ginamit nya for a long time (if i remember correctly). :-)

Yan,mapa tubo man o solid State. Wala nang tatalo kay mang Allan sa tone nya! Sobrang consistent! :-o
-
Frank Gambale, s.s. amp user din. On his recordings and live performances he uses ss amps.
-
Ty Tabor used a solid state Gibson
when he was in King's X and
Dimabag Darrell used a solid state Randall
when he was in Pantera..
-
Andami rin pala... and to think that there are many guitarists who are SS snobs (myself included lalo na pag ang guitar chain ay yung tipong pedals-to-SS amp).
My tonal perspectives are beginning to change now...yet again.
-
Dimebag darrell!
-

Oo nga eh. 8-)
Teka baka, dahil sa headless guitar nya yun.hahaha :-D
-
Dimebag darrell!
Ambigat neto!!! 8-)
I think some metal players prefer SS amps due to their transient response.
-
Shadows fall guitarists Jon Donias and Matt Bachand use SS amps right?
-
Oo, Yamaha SS amp ata ginamit nya for a long time (if i remember correctly). :-)
Holdsworth earlier on (round about the early 80's) used Hartley Thompson Amps, which were solid state. He then gravitated to the Gibson/Norlin Lab Series L5 (which B.B. King and Ty Tabor swear/swore by)
Eto, knock yourself out on AH's space invaders era rack http://www.therealallanholdsworth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5727
Pat Metheny earlier on was totally devoted to his "Acoustic" amps to the point of paranoia, that he wouldn't sound the same without them... until he had to perform somewhere in Europe without then did he realize that it was all in his fingers  Acoustic amps were pretty nuts in the 70's, huge ass stuff, but they rocked! the sweet used them, and i've seen an old creedence clearwater revival vid with them in use, CRANKED and bloodthirsty.
Pat Martino uses Acoustic Image amps. little cigar box things that pump out a couple of hundred watts of "power without corruption" (i quote the ad! hahaha!)
John Scofield used a Yamaha J-50 in his first instructional video, and used SS yamahas on tour with miles.
Mike Stern, on top of his yamaha, has a pearce SS head which he has his rack effect through.
Scores of jazz monsters still stand by their Polytone (Mini)Brute! Such s John Abercrombie, Jim Hall, (boy) George Benson, Joe Pass (r.i.p)...
Richie Kotzen, for a while (uhm, mr. big era?), was using the yamaha DG head, while Holdsworth used two DG combos with extension cabs when dg's were all the buzz. Mike Stern got into them, didn't stick with him though. i just love how hes had the same stuff for, like, forever!!!! We should all follow for the sake of positive economics
Andy Summers used the Roland JC-120 alot in the police (among lotsa new wave chorus guys!)
Thank Mark for this thread! It kinda convinced me that I dont have to go GAS crazy on a tube amp (I was on the verge! Contemplative prayer stage ) i'm sticking to my evans amp, and hoping to chance upon another old yamaha or jc-120
-
^Thanks for this info Anton. I almost forgot about the Polytone - the legendary jazz amp.
Let's just hope that SS amps stay 'affordable' as ever. :-)

Guitarist ng Static X marshall mg head gamit.
Ewan ko lang sa JC-120 ha, but when I used my Seymour Duncan Twin Tube pedal, ang panget ng labas. And it was supposed to be the cleanest amp there is (AFAIK)... :?
But yeah it's freakin' loud!
-
I've tried a Lab Series amp. It sounds like a tube amp, especially when cranked! So I don't think it is representative of 'solid state tone'. ;-)
-
Ty Tabor used a solid state Gibson
when he was in King's X and
Dimabag Darrell used a solid state Randall
when he was in Pantera..
Dimebag uses SS Randall in Pantera and then switch to Krank amps(tube na 'to) in Damageplan..
Howard Davis a former chief designer of Electro-Harmonix have his article regarding TUBES VS SOLID-STATE!!!!
http://howard.davis2.home.att.net/Tubesvs.SolidState.htm
-
Here are some folks that I know who use/used SS amps:
- Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead uses some cheap Fender amp for the dirty tones.
- Frank Zappa used a Pignose 7-100 on the majority of his 70's studio albums.
- Greg Ginn of Black Flag used SS amps and hated tube based amps because tube amps didn't sound aggressive enough for him.
-
Oo nga eh. 8-)
Teka baka, dahil sa headless guitar nya yun.hahaha :-D
Uy yung Carvin Fatboy hindi headless a. Pero ganun parin tunog niya.
-
Dimebag darrell!
INDEED!!! :-D :-D :-D
-
Oo nga pala, and the Pignose amp that Clapton used for his Layla sessions. Now that's legendary! :-)
-
Shadows fall guitarists Jon Donias and Matt Bachand use SS amps right?
no man...Jon Donais uses a Krankenstein(Dimebag Darrell signature) and Matt Bachand uses a Krank Revolution 1...and theyre both toobs... :-)
-
keith richards' tone on the satisfaction riff, that's a badass solid state tone if i'm not mistaken
-
John Pizzarelli uses Jazzkat solid state amps and i think he has tone to die for :-D
Mattotten uses a Sessionette 75 (youtube: htttp://www.youtube.com/mattotten)
:-D
Lotsa Jazz players
-
so this makes Yamaha amps king of solid state amps!
I've got to try one with a bigger cab. Tried Sushi's before..
How's about that Roland JC Amp? any guitar celeb who used or continues to use 'em?
-

pat martino and kevin eubanks.
-
and Alex Lifeson..
-
Frank Gambale, s.s. amp user din. On his recordings and live performances he uses ss amps.
yeah i read in a mag that he's annoyed by the snobs who think that SS sucks. yung sa article lumalabas na, to him, tubes are a step back because they're ancient in terms of technology.
he uses a carvin SS preamp by the way
-
- Greg Ginn of Black Flag used SS amps and hated tube based amps because tube amps didn't sound aggressive enough for him.
I was going to throw out that name into the open as well.
-
pat martino and kevin eubanks.
Talaga?? I could almost swear he uses a tube amp after Jay Leno's monologue. Thick fat tone.. 8-)
-

He uses a Mesa/Boogie on Jay Leno..
-
Figured that much.. Must be a Mark eh?

I thought i'd share...
I let go my Fender Hotrod few months ago. I've been so used to the tube tone, having have used JCMs and twins and AC30's and a couple others in gigs and recordings, so I still keep looking for one somehow - the yearning is there. Pero whenever I hear players like these cats, it makes me want to venture the SS realm somehow.
So I bought a Roland microcube (with amp sims) rightafter and although it was ok, it didn't sound as delicate as a tube amp, IMHO it lacks the subtle nuances that tube amps have.
Now I'm with a Roland JC120... I've been with it for quite a little while palang naman. I think it sounds considerable AND very different than the tube tone we know. Pero the main thing I guess is that it has a sound its own...and it's a sound whose overlooked beauty is worth discovering. Kaso andaming factors to obtain an objectively decent tone... lalo na yung tipong tunog that connects to you artistically - guitar/pedal/amp 'compatibility, amp's flexibility with genres, amps response with your techniques....i could go on.
I think I'm up to take this tonal direction (in the meantime atleast) and see what I can come up with.
I think i'm at the point where I've gotten over the traditional tonal pedagogy... wanting to to try something different instead.
I dunno, wala lang, I'm just pondering I guess. :-)

Speaking of Kings, BB King uses a Lab Series 2x12 solid state. :D

Yan ba yung ginamit nya sa The Thrill is Gone? I soooo dig that tone!
Yung sa recent collab kasi nila ni Clapton very fender-ish tunog nya dun eh. And it sounds too 'accurate', perhaps a little hi-fi-ish (it should be the nature of the album's production). Didn't love it as much as his Thrill is Gone record.
-
great thread!
this is like a SS amp appreciation thread already! 8-) 8-) 8-)
-
john fogerty of creedence and robbie krieger of the doors i read...

Not sure, he uses Fenders din AFAIK. Love his tone din sa Thrill is gone. :D

Reb Beach? Actaully he uses a Hartke Bass Amp head. Only for his clean sounds.hehehe
Yeah, Reb's tone is great.
Another great SS tone I like is Dimebag's, before he switched to Krank tube amps. Damn! I like that tone in Cemetery Gates.
-
my favorite SS... Roland JC120, loud and raw, the crystal cleans, yes i have tried a fender of the same level..owned by our drummer, we tested both and we favor the JC120..

yeah i knew that, he makes me gas a V lol
also the guitarist of Casiopea,
-
never knew so many philmu members apreciates ss amps
a lot of people i know prefer tubes and when i heard one i too fell in love
but dimebag darrels tone was amazing but specially in floods and cemetery gates :-D
some of his solo tones sound too digital to me IMO
-
Marshall 8040. Under rated goodness. When I do get Weber for distribution, I'm gonna change the speaker, speaker cable will be Vovox. :-D

probably because of his korg multi-effects.

Dimebag used Krank just before his death....

fainaly a thread worth reading.... Hey how's it hangin Mark? Sarap ng jam mo nung gas day me likey your style man rapsa type na type kita fafi hehehe.... I think the JC120 is great although it is much too loud for me.... Have you tried the JC77? I think the JC77 is just perfect I love that amp... I have A JC55 myself but I think the 77 is just a little more flexible... I think these amps are just great all around tone wise....
-
probably because of his korg multi-effects.
though I like dimebag's guitar playing, i never liked his tone.
Based from Grady Champion (Dime's guitar tech), the Korg multis were only used during the Trendkill era and only for that album. His rig was basically guitar-->Furman Parametric EQ--->Wah (Vox 847/Dunlop Crybaby)-->MXR Flanger-->Digitech Whammy 1-->MXR 6 Band EQ--->Digitech Whammy 1 (offstage) then split into 3 amp heads, 2 Randall Century RG100's and later on, the Warhead just for cleans.
no man...Jon Donais uses a Krankenstein(Dimebag Darrell signature) and Matt Bachand uses a Krank Revolution 1...and theyre both toobs... :-)
Not anymore. They left Krank amps because of Krank's sh*tty customer/artist relations. They're now using Randall amps. Dunno what exact models though.

Solidstate is crap. :D (runs for cover)
-
Solidstate is crap. :D (runs for cover)
:-D
Pero thanks to SS that it was developed narin. Otherwise anlalaki ng mga appliances natin ngayon with all the tubes chunked in. Imgaine a PC with valves instead of transistors. :-D

To answer the question:
Don Felder used a Fender London Reverb (cool '80s SS amp.)
Steve Vai used a Fender Deluxe 112 in some recordings. One of which is "The Boy From Seattle" IIRC.
Metallica uses Roland JC-120s for cleans in some songs.
-

Ei Johnboy, oks lang bro. Twas nice jammin with you too! Always liked your playing, tas straight to amp ka pa nung GAS day. Ahahaaay charaaap... Fafi narin kita! hehehe
Laki kasi ng JC120 eh kaya ang lakas. Never tried the JC55 and the JC77 though. Pero nung GAS day, pansin ko hirap mag-cut nung SS Crate stack pag kasabayan na yung Juggbox and the Sovtek tube amps.
Hmmm... must be the mid-ish respone ng mga de tubo that makes the Crate drown out of the mix.
Tried a Crate combo sa TMS a couple of months ago (nalimutan ko yung model), decent yung cleans kaso pag dating sa drive channel, ang tinis and napaka-harsh. I had to adjust my picking style (i.e. how i attack the strings with the pick) to get the tone I want kaso anghirap.
I think, if you want to get more tone from your fingers...my tradeoff: you have to adjust your playing technique to compliment the gear you're using, that is.
To answer the question:

Hmmm. it never occured to me, although surely the SS feel can be heard on that particular record.
-
-
^ well, historically NO and NO.
Ang istorya nyang 2 yan boiled down to technological advancement. Google it down for a more indepth info (i.e. the history of valve and transistor technology).
-
nice jam mga papi, @mark, oo nga natabunan yung tunog ng crate dun sa ten02 nung jam na with sovtek at jugg amp sa gas day, hindi ko na din masyado marinig tunog
Pero yung 4x12 cab did justice in producing the bottoms somehow. Although hindi ganun ka tight yung low end nya (based on the 1st band's performance), atleast not as tight as a JCM900.
Pero marami paring factors nevertheless. For one i'm sitting on a corner spot in - i believe- a non-acoustically treated room. So perhaps masyadong exaggerated ang low freqs from where I was sitting. I can't really say. hehe

As Ive said before yun na nga yun nag aajust talaga ang technique pag d mo gusto ang nadidinig mo hehehe kaya dba dati sabi ko tone is in the ears hehehe.... :-D
I feel that the crate was just not set up properly pwede pa i crank yung volume nun eh... napansin ko lang wala ata nag attempt ta i adjust ang volume nung crate...
Im planning to invite Pido to my house one of these days let me know who is interested so I can set a dte na pwede lahat ng may gusto madami tayo matututunan dun kahit sa kwentohan lang pero syempre pwede ba naman mawala ang jamingan hehehe.... :-D
Iwas thinking this saturday what do you guys think?

OT i got a question is it true that an amp with crystal cleans like a fender accepts dirt pedals nicely?
cause if thats true i can just get an ss 60watt amp with crystal cleans and put a dirt pedal to save money on expensive amps

its gotta do with your guitar too Shredmonster.
the equation is always whatever you send to your amp, equals the output whether you desire it or not.

Yup. If space and portability is not an issue...Go for the JC-120.
If space and portability is an issue...Vox MV series. Kelangan mo nga lang ng cabinet.

Does anyone own the Vox MV50 Clean? How does it take dirt pedals?

Isn't the Vox MV series considered as a hybrid amp since meron siyang "tube" in the for of a nano tube?

well, there is the jc 40 if the jc 120 is too loud and too huge for someone's needs.

Well...yeah. haha oo nga.
@marcopolo
Try mo Baroni Lab Mini Amp. I think Pedallion sells one. Yun nga lang...kelangan mo ulit ng cab. hehe
