Title: Cajon kit - Cymbal recommendations?
Post by: Ninjek on August 28, 2015, 03:53:02 PM
Hi!

This is my first time posting here sa drummer's thread kasi I'm not a drummer. I hope this is the right place to ask  :-)

I'm planning on building a 'cajon kit'. To be played entirely with hands (no sticks). Parts would be:

1. Cajon
2. Shaker
3. Chimes
4. Crash or splash cymbal with stand.

I just want to ask, what kind of cymbal should I get? Are there cymbals specifically designed to be hit with hands? My main concern is that it might hurt too much to hit it with my hand. I just need that cymbal sound when the song enters a new part (like going from verse to chorus). Every once in a while lang.

Also, if anyone would like to suggest something else to add to the kit (yung madali lang din dalhin), please feel free!

Thank you  :-D

There are cymbals made for hand hitting, but those are expensive. A small thin crash (14" or smaller) will do. Try to stay away from splashes if you're not using sticks as it has a fast, sharp attack and quick decay that won't be as pleasing when played by the hand.

I do suggest using those rod sticks (Vic Firth Rutes, Vater Multi-rods, they don't really have a name I think) or plastic brushes (yung pang drums ha, hindi pampintura) even on just one hand. They will add a certain snap to your attack while keeping the bass thud good, and of course it wont hurt your hand when striking cymbals or the chimes. Also that way you can add jam blocks to your setup  :)
