The Lines available are Radiant, Sultan, and Samatya.
FYI. Istanbul Cymbals split after Agop's death in 1997. So the other half formed Istanbul Mehmet and Agop's sons continued the Istanbul AGOP name.

ISTANBUL CYMBALS
The art of Turkish cymbal making dates back to the 16th century; the time of the Ottoman Empire. The very first cymbals manufactured in Turkey were actually bells, created for the use in churches. Later on, as the story goes, cymbals were produced for the Ottoman Army band. In 20th century, it had become a well-known fact that Istanbul, Turkey had evolved into the cymbal making capital of the world. Generations of master cymbalsmiths developed, refined and redefined this art in their endless search for perfection. They formulated the most musical alloy, developed and tested hand crafted methods which have been used for centuries. As the 20th century drew towards its close, the traditional Turkish method for hand crafting cymbals had all but been abandoned due to the efficiencies and mass production facility provided by machines. In 1980, the very first Istanbul Cymbals began to enter the market place and the drummers around the world took notice immediately. What they heard and what they saw was the work of our founder, Agop Tomurcuk, who had been developing his skills since the age of 9 and had worked at the original K factory in Istanbul as the foreman until the factory''s closure in 1978. He started this new venture in 1980, with his partner Mehmet Tamdeger under the name ‘Zilciler'. Shortly thereafter, the legendary name Istanbul was founded.
In the following years, the name of the brand; ‘Istanbul Cymbals' became glorious for creating those unique and classic sounds. During those years, we also developed many completely original, inimitable, cutting-edge designs, while we were still employing the traditional methods. Many of these inventive designs are in our production-line today, such as Turk, Sultan, Vezir, Empire, Ottoman and Pasha. In 1996 Agop Tomurcuk passed away prematurely because of a tragic accident. At this point the company was being pulled in two separate directions. It was determined that the company must be split. Agop' s sons; Arman and Sarkis continued their way by following the footsteps of their father and Mehmet was free to run his own separate company as he saw fit. so pagkatapos ko i-scan yung first 10 pages(baka kasi merun na nito, i-lock lang), ginawa ko na itong thread about istanbul cymbals, dahil meron na nga dito. curious ako sa sounds ng bawat series, bronze alloys, durability than other brands(stagg, wuhan, etc.) and about sa price nila compared sa mga nabanggit kong ibang brands at kung reasonable ba yung pricing ng dealers nitong istanbul cymbals. tnx!

I believe walang saktong katapat.. Pero yung istanbul agop traditional pati ung mehmet traditional siguro malapit.. Pero depende pa rin sa weight within that class. Yung Bosphorus Gold series baka medyo malapit din.thanks dude :wink:

Pero from my experience, I lend my Sultans to my friend who played and used it in ULTRA. He's using a 5b sticks and after an hour of bashing, may mga slight dent na sha. Nakikita ko lang yung mga dent na ganun sa Sheet bronze like ZBT crashes. Maybe yung metal nya is different from the Big three.

Sino na po ang matagal na may istanbul? Concern lang ako sa durability, kasi sa stagg dami ko nabalitaang nagcrack eh. I know the debates going on na nasa technique lang talaga ang durability ng cymbals, ako mismo hindi pa din nakaka-crack ng cymbal, but you just cannot ignore those massive users that's disappointed with the durability of the product. May kakilala ako hindi naman kalakasan pumalo at may proper technique talaga pero nakabasag pa din ng stagg. Concern lang talaga ako.. Kung ok talaga tong istanbul baka bumili din ako kahit crash lang. :-D

Well theoretically dapat ganun ang comparison but after buying 2 Sets of Sultan and set of Samatya here's what i can say.
Sultan 16" crash = Sounded like Armand Thin Crash but mellower. Not dark and not that bright but a bit drier.
Sultan 14" Hihats = Comparable to Mastersounds but drier. Fast and responsive. One of the best hats i've played (together w/ Sabian HH 15" old reg hats and 14" Meinl Sand Hats)
Sultan 20" Ride = It's heavy weighted ride. If I'll have a signature ride this will be it. Med heavy feel if riding on it, in between washy and pingy sound, great stick definition you can actually hear the wood resonating from your stick. Bell sound is not piercing it's like the collision of bright and dry bell, maybe because the bell is thick but unlathed. The ride decays fast considering it's a 20 incher.

We play in a small basement and often my zbt's overpower the mix. We play alternative rock, not that loud. Would sultans be quiet enough or at least quieter than my zbt's? Planning on buying a set. Thanks.

Bro usually hat's sizes only corresponds to the desired chick sound. Pero warmth sa 14 paren. Hindi na volume ang issue.

Thanks for clarifying. So size does not determine volume, which is my greatest concern now?somehow it will depend on how you play your hats. Both 13 and 14 if played in same setting will have almost same volume. That's in context of volume. Pero sonically the 13 will sound higher in pitch compared to the 14 which will be washier and warmer. That's why most funk and rnb drummers prefer 13's to get faster response and quicker "chick" sound. 14 will be a good all arounder if you wanna get the best of both worlds the two sizes can offer.

Advantage of Z and S is their consistency... 2 pieces of the same cymbal (same size, series, kind and weight) will sound close to another. So it's safe to order without hearing the exact cymbal you'll order.
Sa Istanbul (and other Turkish brands), each cymbal, even if they're the same size, series, and weight, may sound different from each other. So you have to hear the exact same cymbal that you're going to buy to have an idea on how it sounds like.

ang stagg at wuhan, inconsistent ang sound at ang quality. minsan talaga may basura kang makukuha.
istanbul, habang inconsistent yung character from cymbal to cymbal, laging consistent yung quality--mahigpit ang quality control nila. kaya kahit magkakaiba nga yung tunog, laging high quality pa rin. kailangan mo lang hanapin yung mas gusto mong tunog.

I just purchased a Radiant set cymbals last Aug 26. As the days go by, I noticed that the color is changing especially the outer circle of the ride cymbal. Is this discoloration or rust formation? This is my first cymbal set and by the looks of it I'm not happy. I hope it doesn't affect the sound in the long run?

OT lng po: recently I visited Lazer Ali Mall Cubao to check Istanbul cymbals. I saw a drumset with cymbals and I checked out the Sultan hats because I am very curious about it. May worn-out drumsticks na nakapatong lang sa snare ng kit, so I thought it's ok to test out some cymbals. I tapped the hats lightly, choking them by hand because I didn't bother to step on the hat stand pedal. After being satisfied by the sound, binalik ko uli yung drumsticks sa dati. Then the sales guy of the store approached me, I thought would help me choose cymbals. But he instead took the drumsticks and hid them behind the counter. I looked puzzled but I continued by asking prices, he doesn't even know how much exactly they were and didn't even mentioned about the discounts. But what really hit me is his action of taking away those drumsticks. It's important to hear cymbals in person para maconvince talaga ang buyer, pero parang ayaw nya yata magbenta ng cymbals eh.
Nainis lang ako dun kasi before nun galing naman ako sa TMS, talagang ok lang sa kanila dun magtest ng stagg cymbals. Sana naman ganun din sa Lazer kasi, para sakin, hindi naman ako bibili ng bnew cymbal na hindi ko man lang narinig mismo yun sa personal.

I have called Lazer north edsa and their head office. I want replacement but they said it is only for 7 days after the purchased date. If it really was brand new, I expect something would happen after some months but it was just days. :( They're insisting also that it's discoloration and they have a vater cleaner for it(that I should buy or free cleaning with jollibee?).
I'll just drop by there to get it addressed. And I hope everything will be ok.

na-appreciate ko tunog ng cymbals one time nagpunta ako sa Lazer sa sm manila, one of their staff was playing on a kit with the said cymbals and i must say the cymbals sounded somewhat like Sabians.

anyway, i was able to test the 14" Turk hats. they weren't as dry as i expected them to be, but man.. :drool: i don't know if they sound better than my K Mastersounds or if they just sound different that's why i liked them. bottom line is, the Turk sounds awesome. they are not for everyone, though.
the origin dark ride was also a joy to listen to.
an effects crash, china, aux hats, and a splash. the number of istanbul pies in my kit is slowly catching up with the number of zildjians. masama 'to. :lol:

Bro magkaiba sila. If you're happy w/ Sabians then stay there. Ako kasi at one point became frustrated to new releases ng Zildjians specially the K Custom lines. Clangy na sobra and wala na ung darkness. I then bought Meinl Byzance pero turn off ang price nila here from Lyric. Then Istanbul came. Started w/ Sultans and i never went back to Zildjians. ANg itinira ko lang na Zildjians ko ay yung mga year 2000 and below and production date.

The sound has unique brilliant characteristics of the Traditional cymbal sounds and the dry&woody sound of the unlathed Turk cymbal series. Meron almost 8K for the 16" size. wala pa sila anything larger than that. Dry and brash yung tunog, more "pang" sounding IMO.

First impressions tapping the cymbals lightly inside a mall:
- ang sarap ng overtones ng ride. I thought it was super dry, but it's still more like a traditionally lathed K/HH, or maybe an RBDR or something (haven't heard it though). Pero super sweet ng overtones.
- crash is okay. not that particular with crashes though. wanna see how it sounds like in a volume swell
- the hats I'm not sure yet. probably the one I might swap out if it turns out to be too dry or have a crappy chick.

yung ride sounds wonderful. its crashable, it has a nice bow, nice bell as well.
the crash, kung 16 yan, so so lang yan. the 18 is <3.
the hats, IMHO are the best. volume lang kulang pero they sound like love.

Sultan/Traditional sounds like a good combo! If that was me, I'd get Sultan hats and ride, then a Traditional Crash. but then again that's just because I find the Sultan crash too dry for my taste. Wet, dark crashes do it for me! :)

toldja, the hats are love. even sa studio they like how it sounds. and the ride. whew. nagagas ako sa ride ni istanbul dahil sa pagiging crashable niya. :(

yun nga eh. gusto ko sana yung aux crash ko pang crash riding talaga (Sabian calls this technique "Wash Riding", for their APX line promotions), eh ang hirap maghanap ng crash ride na mura. I find crash rides have a more stable swing than crashes (minsan kasi sa next downstroke mo nasa baba pa yung cymbal kaya nawawala sa rhythm.
kung yun ang problem mo paps, kailangan mo ng heavier cymbal. or you have to work on a technique to control this. pag ginagawa ko yan sa sultan parang circular motion ang striking motion ko para di siya tumungo.

nah walang coating mga paiste. you would know when you touch a cymbal. its always bare metal. they only say that they have a protective coating for marketing purposes...so they can sell more of their brand cleanerlies!! corporate lies!! :-o
laganap naman yung cymbal factory videos ngayon. you will never see one where they show you a step wherein they dip or spray something on it. secret step/recipe? i think the simplest explanation is there no protective coatings at all.

first encounter was by accident :lol: I was cleaning my Stagg SH splash and china, tapos sabi ko, "wow ok effective pala yung lemon plus salt scrub nagiging shiny ulit sya, pati sa B8 nawawala yung tarnish. siguro ok na kahit once or twice a year tapos periodic cleaning to keep the sheen." Then I figured ah baka ok dun sa Sultan ride kasi may mga stain sya galing sa cymbal mutes na ginamit ng forumite na pinagbilhan ko. so yun scrub scrub scrub tapos WHOAH PINK tapos WHOAH PURO LIBAGuna nagpanic ako tapos sabi ko wait lang ang cool naman pala mas raw tingnan. pero ang pangit pag isa lang yung ganun kasi halata na may nagawa ako na mali, so pati yung hats dinamay ko na :lol: yung crash lang yung di ko dinamay gusto ko i-trade :wink:
Sound wise, para syang naging HH to HHX or something :lol: I like the effect on the ride, sa hats di ko pa napapansin. I actually like my ride even better :razz:

salt and lemon are both corrosive, if you love your pies, stop cleaning them hehehe (personal opinion lang po)

Just got my Samatya Set (14"HH, 16"C, 20"R), last week kaso napansin ko tabingi yung crash and ride. Got the crash replaced last week and currently waiting for the ride replacement this week. No keyhole or dents or kahit chip offs, yun ang tinignan ko maigi, ung nga lang di ko nacheck yung distribution ng weight ng cymbal, since lahat ng mga nabili kong cymbal set dati for church eh wala namang naging issue na ganun (kahit yung former Planet Z ko, hehehe). Nung una akala ko mali angle ng cymbal stand ko pero nung diniretso ko yung angle (90 Degrees) at nilagay yung crash pumapaling sa kaliwa, kahit anong gawing ikot mo sa cymbals, yung ride naman sa kanan, not sure kung uneven yung bigat or mali pwesto ng hole. Kahit sa daliri itest pumapaling eh, as tested by Lazer staff himself. Nagulat nga din yung staff ng Lazer, first time daw nilang nakakita ng pumapaling na samatya hehe. Wala namang issue sa hihats. Inasikaso naman agad ng Lazer yung request ko na palitan, kudos to them.
Mabait naman yung mga taga-Alimall. Siguro ito yung isa sa mga cons ng "hand-made" compared sa mga machine made na hehehe. Kelangan i-double check isa-isa yung cymbals kung even yung distribution ng weight. Sarap sa tenga ng tunog, wala ng tunog lata haha.

Offhand the origin is more expensive sa net, so based on the price it may be the higher end cymbal.
Get the origin. in a live setting, the turk will be overpowered lalo na kung hindi mellow genre ang tugtugan mo. you would need that overtone from the origin sa mga bigger venue.

The thing about testing the cymbals in different branches is that there's the chance na makuha na yung isang cymbal bago mo mabalikan. So like Ralph said, just really trust your ears for this one. At the same time, since these are real hand hammered cymbals, the tone can really vary like you said, may origin na katunog ng Turk. So be careful, and don't be pressured buy a specific cymbal just because it sounds the best of the bunch. Happened once when I picked my splash, I had a cymbal model and size in mind and I hated everything in stock, but I loved one of a different size and different size.

While we're on hand hammering, I just came across an article by Mike Awerin for Spin Magazine, May 1989 issue - an interview of Mehmet Tamdeger and Agop Tomurcuk way back when they were still together:

Based on what I've read, Sir, you may not be needing "more discerning" ears since they may have discerned the cymbal sound for you already hehe ... it may be safe to say that any Istanbul cymbal you choose will still sound better than a mass produced one...
Guess i better stick to the machine made stuff til i get more discerning ears. Maybe the closest thing to a hand hammered made in istanbul cymbal i can get is probly a b20 twenty allegedly hand hammered in turkey by some guy named murat diril. Again too much google for me. Hahaha!
If you can tell the difference between two cymbals of the same kind (sabi mo diba yung isang origin-Turk pair magkaiba sa isang shop tapos magka tunog sa kabila), then you already have discerning ears. Just trust your ears now and buy the cymbal that gives you the sound you want whether it's the one you expect or not. You will always find a better sound in your tone journey. And as for the sweet spot, it's doesn't mean that it's the only good spot on the cymbal, it means it's the best sounding area, and old jazz players would keyhole their cymbals so they can hit that sweet spot all the time.
My only concern w ith the origin dark is that it might be too mellow that it will sink too deep in the mix.
Thanks sir! I use drum samples all the time in my old work as a "film" scorer. Maybe that's why i have a preference siguro. I find that the dark cymbals probably are more complex cause they don't have that overpowering shimmer that b8 cymbals have. My only concern w ith the origin dark is that it might be too mellow that it will sink too deep in the mix.I find that cymbal samples, unless specifically tuned for jazz/blues/world, are taken from or tuned to mimic a European cymbal rather than a Turkish one. Stuff like Meinl and Paiste come to mind with their really open B8/10/12 cymbals. That's as far as sampling and recording are concerned. Darker cymbals have a much better balance but far from sample-like.

Mga sir plano ko sana bumili nito sa Lazer. Currently I've been using ZBT 13" hats and my Pearl 16" crash/ride but surprisingly after 1 year of playing I still like how my pearl crash sounds even though its just a stock cymbal. :-o

Gusto ko po sana sa 14" hats yung crisp sounding at responsive.
Sa 16" crash responsive, smooth at magaan.
Sa 20" ride naman yung may good stick definition, clear bell sound pero hindi sobrang lakas ng volume.
I've been leaning on the Istanbul mehmet traditional set but I'm curious of the sultan series also.
Would getting a set be better than buying it individually?

A quick look in the internet shows the price range of a traditional cymbal set (14-16-20in.) at 28-31k peso equivalent...
personally wala akong alam na same quality cymbals at equal or lower price dito sa atin (syempre brand new)
As I said, my guess is Lazer is pricing it to be lower than the others but with enough profit.
Gone are the days when a sultan or samatya set costs just P16-18k...
