Title: Carpentry as Hobby anyone?
Post by: bakit? on August 07, 2014, 12:38:16 PM
Im planning to take up carpentry as a precursor towards trying to build guitars. I may laso want to delve into electronics and stuff. Anyone here who is thinking of the same?

In! I love building stuff! guitar related or not! hahaha

my advice bro, is to look into guides or DIY Books and Videos.

medyo maswerte ako kasi my late grandfather was quite the builder so yun yung bonding moments namin. building cabinets, pedal boards, spice racks and all hahaha

only thing, i wasn't well versed with powertools so guitarbuilding for me via an all hand method was almost impossible. I had a project SG before, mejo ang pangit ng output. most prob kasi nga I didn't have the proper tools to work with. hahahaha

on the other hand, sa non guitar stuff, i built bed frames and cabinets and shelves na. very very fulfilling pag successful and project mo. hahaha lalo na pag napintahan or navarnishan ng ayos, tapos nakadisplay na sa bahay. time and sweat well spent! :D

kaso mabigat pag good woods ginamit..

alam ko mga boutique cab and amp makers yung baltic birch ginagamit...

per I think cab and speaker encosures are a good start.

Had some rudimentary knowledge gained noong elementary. Iba naman eh gained from my uncles. My father is not the builder type. More of sales talk, politics and pick up lines ang natutunan ko sa kanya, he he he.

Anyway, I made some table tops dati. Nabasag kasi yung marble na nakapatong. Hindi ako makagawa ng circular so what I did was octagonal na curved naman ang edges, he he he. Copping saw galore! Nung pinanganak panganay namin ni misis, gagawa ako ng high chair, I even made a miniature and had some drawings.

Parang pegs and joints and holes and all that. Medyo mahirap nga lang. But if you are into precise na pagsusukat, maayos naman.

In, as Ralph says. Maraming available books and ebooks.

1. Start with a simple project, buy tools and master it.
2. Safety kit, gloves, goggles, etc.
3. A place to work with.

Keep it safe as always.

Bro Qroon, yung mga nail-less na construction, ganun yung mga antqiue pieces eh. gumagamit ng wooden dowels as alternative to pako. yung mga Tarugo kung tawagin. :)

IN ako dito. latest project ko is coffee table made of wood pallet. ansaya ng feeling pag natapos mo ang isang project.

Handy man. Modern way of learning. Pero minsan mas maganda pa rin sana kung live lesson as in actual lesson para kung may mga tanong, madaling maitatanong at masasagot.

Ilang araw ba Tesda course nito? Tsaka kung may idea, magkano? Plumbing rin isang maganda eh, partner nitong Carpentry.

So planning to do some DIY works in a couple of weeks time.
Was planning on a pvc table support like this: http://www.handimania.com/diy/pvc-pipes-table.html
Then ta pvc play pen for my kids: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/536772849312725268/
I tried it before sa guitar rack and ok naman sya, pero I think I would need some tools for projects like these.

Any tips for the type of cutter? Gamit ko kasi before is lagare lang, medjo mapagod.

Ayos lang ang lagare in my opinion as long as sharp ang blade mo and tama ang technique.
I'm also into building things and I follow rags and bones sa Youtube. I've built my own flightcase pedalboard, and the bigger projects are sturdy workbench with vise, table sa studio sa room and my guitar rack all made our of reclaimed wood, mga kamang nasira, cabinet or table then repurpose na lang mga panels na pwede pa

Sarap nga mag DIY, meron ako cheapo cordless drill (very essential to in my opinion), Boss Corded Hammer/Drill, saka Rockwell jigsaw.

Pero mostly, woodworking talaga gusto ko so bumili ako 1/4", 1/2" at 1" cheasels, cheapo block plane and jack plane
I like building things using wood glue and complex joinery instead of nails and screws but I'm no expert hehe (hindi pa din Pulido mga projects)

Thanks man. Normal handsaw for crosscutting tapos backsaw for joint cuts plus a lot of sweat (gandang workout )

More of a hobbyist here.  Guess it's more woodcraft than woodworking, definitely not carpentry or frame carpentry at least.  If that makes sense.  Perhaps I would call it amateur woodcrafter by choice. :-D

Pedalboard, speaker cabs, are some of the builds I've done guitar related.  Though I've built a chest of drawers when I was in my teens, some axe, hammer, and other tool handles.  And this year I've done a Paul Sellers inspired workbench.

Prefer working with natural wood or milled lumber.

Generally handtools, just a Bosch power drill for holes (though I may use an eggbeater handtool for that as well).

Oh, and did I mention I'm a sucker for old hand tools.

Do we have like minds here?  I miss the old photobucket days, seems I can't host my pics from there anymore.

me too! built several speaker cabs and boards for personal use hahaha was lucky to live near a salvaged lumber store so wood was cheap to come by back then. :)

I'm thinking once I retire I will pursue "woodcraft" as well.
Have you seen that hand-built house in Latvia? (check out Northmen on Youtube) My brother and I are planning to hand build our own house as well but definitely no where near the wooden house built by Jacob in that video.

Meron pa drill press and plunge router attachments.

Meron akong dremel and isang chinese brand, usually ginagamit ko  sa PCB, mga wood works na maliliit, and as a drill..

mukhang tama naman para sa Dremel 3000 - if I'm not mistaken older/lower model nila to. pwede na nga sya for the price, pero yun attachments like drill press workstation and router base ang mahal e

Would be great to see your hand tools  :-D and your Paul Sellers inspired workbench.
I'm thinking once I retire I will pursue "woodcraft" as well.
Have you seen that hand-built house in Latvia? (check out Northmen on Youtube) My brother and I are planning to hand build our own house as well but definitely no where near the wooden house built by Jacob in that video.

Would be nice to show them, if damned photobucket hadn't gone greedy and way too slow with the ad clicking revenue model. Bonkers, I feel I haven't quite kept up with the latest photo sharing and also non privacy invasive techs.

I really like Mr. Sellers' approach and the mentality of hand tools ww. Even way before, the philosophy behind it has struck a chord with me. When he became huge on the internet, I think myself and a lot of other amateurs have further reinforced for themselves what was unspoken in them about general ideas of building what you need sustainably, with the benefit of the added workout and keeping hand skills and sharp blades tuned.
