16 ch mixer?
« on: February 24, 2007, 05:07:36 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a new mixer... at least 16 mic inputs (so that's usually a 20ch or so)

My first choice would be a Mackie CFX20... any other recos within this league?  And more or less what's the price range?

Am using a Soundcraft EMP8 for my band, both for monitors and FOH.  Works ok.  This is nice for small set ups with subs and 2 per side FOH speakers.  I use 4 monitors.  We normally use 5 vocal mics, 1 for kick, 1 placed on a direct box for the bass.  Good enough for a small venue.

Audiophile does Soundcraft.  I think they a larger input board.

mikep, I'm actually upgrading from a Soundcraft ES-12... nothing great... it was within my budget at the time.

Thing I don't like about SOundcraft is that their sliders are so light!  Even my Tapco board has a much better feel than the large SC boards. :(

Unfortunately, Tapco only makes small format mixers... so anything larger, I'm looking at Mackie already.

If SC had some weight in their sliders, I'd have gone for them instead since Audiophile is a lot closer to where I live and I buy most of my stuff from them anyway.

Then go for the 1604.  The thing is it is an old board.  Maybe you can go for the Onyx which I believe is a far better board.  I have the Mackies (1204 and 32-8 with VLZs) and they are still serving me well.  I just went for the EMP8 because it has better input configs and smaller and lighter for live applications.  It works well.

Tapco is done by Mackie.  George Mackie designed it but it is a cheaper board compared to the Mackies.  The old ones are good.  I have no experience with the new Tapcos.

Ok... choices are now..

Mackie VLZ Pro 1604
Soundcraft MPM20

Soundcraft is cheaper... but will I regret going for the MPM20 over the VLZ Pro 1604?  I'd rather save up if it means getting a better board.

What will be your application?  If recording, I believe the VLZ 1604 is a better choice.  I'll have a look at that Soundcraft MPM 20 later.  Am not familiar with it.  How about the Onyx?  MarioB might be able to give you a discount.  Howe about it Mr. Benipayo?

The Onyx is a bit too much for my wallet... Mario is helping me out with the VLZ 1604.

My main application will be for live use.... I highly doubt I'll use it for recording, but it would be nice if it was good enough for recording as well.

i think the only new feature with the onyx series is the firewire addons. MACKIE IS MACKIE! great preamps!

yeah i guess you can settle with the vlz if mostly for live applications :)

There is new VLZ, new preamp design and new eqs, if I am not mistaken.  I hope that is the one you are looking at.  With MarioB, you're in good company.

No, you're talking about the new VLZ-III mixers... I'm just looking at the older VLZ-Pro (still the current line in Mackie's website, the VLZ-III are the new incoming ones)  The new incoming ones are still too expensive for me! :P

Jplacson.. i got my mackie with onyx mic pre and even if it's just the smaller version ( onyx 1220) i can honestly say i can hear my mixes much much better. ( i never heard my NS10 sound that clear and precise!!) . 8-)..  better than my old Behringer Eurodesk 24x8x2 mixer. Even with the VLZ mixers you can't go wrong..

Baldo, oh ya... Berry stuff is nice for the price... but as all things go, you get what you pay for.  Even over the low end Soundcraft mixer that I used (ES-12), Berrys do sound weaker/thinner.  My small Tapco mixer sounds much better than the Soundcraft...which is why I wished Tapco made larger boards... but alas, they don't so looks like I'm going with their mother company, Mackie.

Mikep, maybe you've got an old VLZ 1604 that you wanna upgrade and are thinking of selling cheap... ;) hehehehe... just checking... :P
