I'm not a jazzer by any stretch but in HS and college the name of Charlie Parker would pop from time to time in my 'research' of black music. Then I found a book on improvisation in our college library. Of course, it used Parker as an example for bop. The notes on the staff jumped out at me -- I knew immediately na iba to. So I trooped to the music store nearest our school and bought a tape that had Charlier Parker in it: "The Greatest Jazz Concert: The Quintent Live at Massey Hall." I got lucky for this was a good intro to the other great giants of bebop jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach.
I was enthralled but also realized I'd never have the acute comprehension and technical skills to play this stuff on guitar. Still, though, I enjoy bebop jazz immensely and continued to build on the collection that started from that one tape. Aside from Bird, I particularly love Powell, Monk, Stitt, Rollins, Adderley, Evans... Konti lang sa gtrst - kay Wes, Pass, Farlow, Django pa lang ako kinikilabutan.
