Dami pa nabibili mga original CDs. There are even re-releases I saw in Fully Booked.

Meron din at least 4 different compilation albums.

My faves (popular) include Kid Charlemagne, Josie, Peg and Aja. My non-popular fave are Caves of Altamira and Black Cow.

If you have the chance, watch the "Aja" Steely Dan DVD where they discussed the making of the Aja album.  Those guys were perfectionists in many ways.  From every vocal nuance to very slight variations in the playing of a certain rift to wholesale changes to the entire session gang for a particular song, these guys wouldn't settle for second best. SD lyrics were always top-notch - makukorto utak mo just to make out the messages, hidden or otherwise, in every SD song.  I still have to come across a SD song I didn't like, though my favorite is Pretzel Logic.

well if somebody steps up into the plate to play drums and also sing those classic steely dan songs, I and Bod are okay for keyboards. it just has to be organized(as in "cinifra" or we can play the song from start to finish) so that it doesn't turn into a jam session.

...gotta be serious 'bout those Steely Dan songs....

pretzel logic is the best blues jam. i was dreaming SRV wouldve collaborated even just for that song (wet dream).

kulang na lang drums. ako na vocals and little bit of guitars (di to stir)

then maybe we can do stuff, like origs na lagyan ng "feel" na steely. i got songs or maybe you guys have too :)

its about time we do other stuff than the usual :)

My favorite lines in all of music:

I'll learn to work the saxophone
I play just what I feel
Drink scotch whiskey all night long
And  die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world

I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the crimson tide
Call me Deacon Blues  (Deacon Blues)

GEEKS RULE! :-D Fyi, I'm a geek. hehehe.

I just bought the last copy of "Steely Dan Guitar Anthology Series" at National Bookstore. World Class. If you want to copy this, PM or text nyo ko, boys. 0917-8018907. :-D

Kahit rhythm ako, sama. :-D

Meaning ng Steely Dan ba or Boddhisattva?

Here goes. Correct me if I'm wrong, guys.

If my memory serves me right, Boddhisattva is a Hindu being who, after reaching NIRVANA (enlightened state or "heaven" to us Christians) comes back to earth as a "Boddhitsattva."

Steely Dan, on the other hand, came from a book (which I forgot). In that book, a character endearingly calls her dildo as her "Steely Dan."

There you go. :-D

i agree, these guys are GEEKS! ung mga topic ng kanta, ibang klase. what amazes me is how they made it sound so darn COOL and overly , ecstatically swell to listen to!(wetdream again... nagigiging bedtime songs ko na to)

pero pansin ko, ung mga kanta nila during the time they had DAvid Palmer as lead vocals, mabababaw at closely POP (e.g. do it again). eto ung time na the record company wanted them to really SELL sa masa (as i read, which explains the david palmer and the songs, coz fager apparently isnt a treat to watch). but i dont dig them songs as much as i do when Fager sings them. i saw this video once on youtube, they did 'do it again' with palmer. you could see (o baka ako lang yun), di mo maipinta ung mukha ni Fagen, like he was discontent, close to disgust, that they were selling out, bringing in a more 'sellable' singer just to be able to sell more records.

He (donald) reminds me of Ray Charles (notice the similarity in the pout and the way they sing) but more refined, not as rough bluesy as the shades (not to say Ray Charles and his blues is lesser, ibang category lang). I dig ray charles too, tho not as much as SD. Mas may SOUL nga lang si RAy Charles, being black (natural na to!) plus being blind (see no evil... doesnt mean he's less evil. TRivia, pareho silang na addict sa heroin ) Pero sa material, Ray is a footnote in SD's epic ass hehehe (pardon my exaggeration)

i now love Becker-Fagen than Lennon-McCartney (sorry beatlefans). The Fab four was easier to the ear* but the substance of the SD duo's materials makes john and paul's songs seem like broth made from salt and water. Try to compare: 'She Loves You' to 'Rikki Dont Lose That Number'. parang kinder ung beatles tapos nag-mmasteral na ung Steely Dan, in both lyrics and musicality.

(*common chords...easy to follow... Steely dan's? try to jam without being familiar with the songs, you wouldnt last a phrase, e.g. FM)

pero i still LOVE the beatles. i grew up with them.

but that doesnt go without saying I wish I grew up with Steely Dan instead.  :-D

ps. new favorite: Time Out of Mind. swabe, para tlgang 80s slow groove song. sna buhay na ako dati :)

Inside the cover/jacket of Steely Dan's 'Alive In America' album which was recorded live during their US 1993 & 1994 reunion tour, you will find "Steely Dan Alive In America Contest Results." On the category question "What are Donald and Walter really like?" The 1st Place winner, Warren Bernhardt, a pianist from Woodstock, NY, entered this winning answer: "They're like really weird, man. I think they were probably abducted by aliens years ago - yeah, that would explain it."

Yung Things I Missed The Most meron ako dito. Last track sya nitong Steely Dan Collection album CD, gift ng friend ko ito from US.. yung mga SD ko dito mga common din katulad ng nasa bold letters mo. I remember meron ako vinyl record(33 rpm) double album ng Best Of Steely Dan na nabili ko during my high school days..he-he..
After all these years di ko na naexplore ang mga songs ng Steely Dan, yun lang mga common ang palagi nadidinig ko. Kinanta nila ng live ang Do It Again & Reelin' In The Years w/ Jeff "d Skunk" Baxter on guitar. That's the first time i saw & heard them.. from then i also got hooked on SD.

Yung Steely Dan Alive In America maganda pagka-live ng mga songs. They put on new/different arrangements on some of their old songs.
Yung Reelin In The Years iniba nila areglo ng mga kabitan & brasses, lumalim sya..

That was an inside Dan joke - Warren Bernhardt actually played keys on that tour!

Anyway for the guy looking for the complete Steely Dan works, look for the boxed set "Citizen Dan" which has everything they recorded before their hiatus. It's only about 4 CDs I think.

Then look for the Steely Dan live DVD at your suking dibidi tindahan - this represents the contemporary live Dan as opposed to their studio days. Steely Dan Live is a relatively recent phenomenon (dating back from the Alive in America days) and is a very tight ensemble. Sound on this DVD is great if you have a nice Home Theater System.

In the Two Against Nature video, they themselves were narrating how they treated various guitar sessionists to do the infamous Peg guitar solo. They wanted a certain sound that  each sessionist took almost a day to do.  They had four or five tries without success. It came to a point where a sessionist being asked to do it would quip, "Oh no, I'm being asked to do a guitar part for Steely San!",with a heavy sigh.

But you must admit the sound they were looking for, finally nailed by Jay Graydon, WAS different.  Gives you an idea of the personalities of those two as asked by this thread initially.

Akala ko rin Carlton yun.

One of the vocalists in the 2vsNature video is a hottie - Carolyn Leonhart.  Hayop sa boses, specially when she and the two other back-up singers do blues.  However in her two solo CDs, she sings traditional big-band tunes done with a trio as backup.  Suabeng-suabe:  Ma-e-"L" ka talaga.

I'll rent Gig Studios in Cubao for 3 hours sometime this April, maybe Saturday am - just decide on the date. I'll have my band there and then all who are interested to play SD songs can come. I'll also invite Deacon Blues and Psychic Sushi.

Our band (non-pro) can already play Josie.
We can jam Peg, Reeling in the Years, Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Pretzel Logic.

come on guys your inputs....

for those who will post their availability and the songs you know. please also post the intro or at least the first few chords of the song so that madali mag cifra and we avoid any "key" issues. let's just try to narrow it down to 5 steely dan songs by mutual agreement...

1.grasyaps - he he you started this
2. 3650guy - "deacon blues" sana  2nd keyboare
3. boddhisattva - "Josie", "Peg" "reelin in the years" daw... keyboards

not really jazz for me. most of the musicians in their albums are jazz and pro session musicians hence the perception maybe. although for me "Aja" might be considered as jazz listening. most of their early work was pop-rock, and later moving into blues/jazz/pop.

A long, long time ago I remember reading an interview with a Steely Dan member (not sure if it was Skunk or Denny Diaz) wherein the interviewer asked the member to define SD's music.  Sabi niya "intelligent rock, happy blues, and angst-sy jazz.  Talk about oxymorons".

Pop-rock with jazz chords?

Some of the lyrics are really jazz inspired, like "Deacon Blues" and especially "Parker's Band" which is chock-full of Charlie Parker references.

They also like stealing jazz licks - like Horace Silver's "Song For My Father" is the intro of "Rikki Don't Lose That Number".

They did record a full fledged jazz instrumental - "East St. Louis Toodle-Doo", which is a Duke Ellington piece from the 30's (I heard the original, and The Dan did a good job of rearranging the big band piece for electric guitars).

I remember the guy who sang Ulan, he is Joey Maurillo, The Boys' guitarist.. they were the backup band of Lolit Carbon song Usok with the guitar solo of Bong Weinstein, their other guitarist..

Even in this parody video, The Eagles thought that Steely Dan were geeks. Kakatawang halo ng comedy tsaka VH1's Behind The Music.

Also back on topic:  like I mentioned at another messageboard, My Old School has got to have one of the best guitar solos ever executed...aside from those fantastic horn parts.

They'll be touring the US again this summer too.

Gig studios reserved 4-6 pm Monday. It's in Ermin Garcia (side street of Nepa Qmart) right beside the big Church. Note that it has no sign, you'll just notice that there are lots of cars parked in front of the carinderia on the G/F. It's on the 3rd floor, a little spartan but nevertheless complete (and cheap too).

Going north from EDSA, turn right at New York (at the corner is BDO _Equitable) just after Baliwag transit. Turn left on any good road and you'll cross Ermin Garcia.

Just concluded the jam.  John,Wendel, Nonoy, Kedy, Jun, Jim and Konkretaink came, saw and conquered. Because this was the 1st time, and we're still trying to find out common songs, we were able to jam the following:
  FM
  Deacon Blues
  Do it Again
  Rikki Don't Lose that Number

In various stages of completion:
  Peg
  Pretzel Logic
  Reeling in the Years
  Josie

We now have something that we can play, and next time we can concentrate on cleaning up our acts.  Sorely missed were Tinnie and Anton.

Mga bros, nagpopost ako photos ayaw ma-post. "the uploader is full" daw.. pano ba gagawin ko. mga 4 pics lang naman ito, sent by my friend from NY. nanood sya last Sat ng SD concert at the Beacon Theatre in NY..

Sorry, I disabled file uploads on this board (the forum takes enough disk space as it is) long ago. So what we do when posting photos is upload to a photo sharing site (there are scads of these everywhere like Photobucket, pbase, multiply, flickr, yada yada yada) and then post the poto using the "insert image" command (the icon that looks like a photoframe on the editor) and then pasting the URL of the JPEG or image.

If you don't have a photo sharing account on any of these sites - open one, it's easy enough to do so.

Chits, I saw them over the weekend at NYC's Beacon theatre (found out a few days after buying the tix that they will be playing in Casino Rama before going up to Montreal).  Anyway, their lead git - Jon Herington's playing will blow you away!

Sulit na sulit, worth every penny spent.

Thanks for the heads up! Just 5 more days!!

On the Two Against nature dvd, I noticed Walter Becker's very tasty playing. Idol ko na rin.

So why would another high-caliber, high-profile guitarist, i.e. Jon Herrington, now be needed in the band? Discounting physical exhaustion as possibly the primary reason...

Vjoe, during last weekend's Beacon gig, Jon was introduced by Fagen as the band's musical director as well.  If I recall from the Aja DVD, I think it was Larry Carlton who was reminiscing that when he was doing SD work, he acted like the bridge (or in computer-speak, the business analyst) between the technically-trained musicians and Becker/Fagen, who had a clear concept of what they wanted but couldn't put their concept in music-speak for the hired guns to execute.

Thanks Jaco D. Great info. Good to know. Though I would have thought the duo was technically proficient as well. Surfing some more, I see that Herington also played on their last two cds, so I guess doing the same for a tour naturally follows.

Great music. We were fooling around with "Black Friday" last night, and, luckily for me, there's only a few rhythm guitar chords in that song... else I wouldn't have been able to cope. But I couldn't solo to save my life...

Saw them last night. Great show. Honestly, I guess I was expecting more. I suppose it was because it was in an outdoor venue where I believe doesn't give justice to the music the guys where playing. I'd rather see them indoors  where there are great acoustics. Bottomline, it's great to see them perform live.

On other stuff, I didn't see the pedals those guys were using but I assume they didn't really use much except for maybe an overdrive. Becker used his signature 3 soapbar Sadowsky plugged into a pair of Mesa Boogies and Jon Herrington, who I think played really well, used a 335 and a tele and was plugged into a couple of Guytron GT100FVs.

Here's the set list:
Steely Dan: Set List for the Ottawa Bluesfest, July 5th 2008

   1. Overture
   2. The Royal Scam
   3. I Got the News
   4. Show Biz Kids
   5. Two Against Nature
   6. Hey Nineteen
   7. Do It Again
   8. Gaucho (Walter Becker vocal)
   9. Home At Last
  10. Parker's Band (vocals by backup singers)
  11. Josie
  12. Black Friday
  13. Love is Like an Itching in my Heart (band intro)
  14. Peg
  15. FM

      ENCORES:
  16. Kid Charlemagne
  17. Last Tango in Paris (instrumental by band)

Walter Becker was never the main guitar player of Steely Dan. In fact, he originally played the bass for most of their recordings except for probably the last couple of ones. Most of the lead work on their albums were done by session musicians like Larry Carlton, Elliot Randall, Jeff Baxter, Rick Derringer, Mark Knopfler, Wayne Krantz, etc.

I think Jon Herrington is a far better guitar player than Becker. But then Becker is known more for his songwriting abilities with Fagen than his actual playing.

True. But it looks/sounds to me that Becker's playing has improved quite a lot; and may get to a point soon when he can ably carry the load... that is, should he want to.

Those songs are in their full setlist. I believe they just take out or add more songs as they go along. The show we got lasted 80 minutes. Some folks are saying Ottawa was the first place they played Do It Again on this tour.

Definitely. Altho I don't see him carrying all the guitar load on tour. What I noticed was, most of the solos that required to be played like their recorded version were played by Jon, while Becker improvised more when he got his turn. Which is typical of Walter Becker even when he played bass.

Mukhang tama ka diyan Chits -  they didn't play Do It Again when I saw them at the Beacon (not sure about the four or five other shows they had there during the week), though I would have wanted to hear Jon or Walter's take on the classic Denny Dias guitar solo.

They had "Steady" Freddie Washington playing bass in his usual "no frills" style (just the low end, baby), and I kinda missed seeing the late great Cornelius Bumpus on sax.  I saw Fagen (again at the Beacon) during the early 90s when he was on the "Rock and Soul Review" tour, and when I saw SD a few weeks back I was hoping against hope that Michael McDonald would be singing his signature "Pretzel Logic" line once again (asa pa, ultimong Pretzel Logic di nila kinanta).

Maybe it's just me but I found that Last Tango thing a bit out of place.  The brass section played it like a funeral march (anong tawag niyan sa atin - Punebre?).

You got it! Your examples are all correct.. yun yata ang usong effect nung 70s specially on Stylistics and Tavares' songs. (I think it's a vibrato effect). You can reproduce that sound using a chorus or a flanger (medyo hawig na rin) by adjusting the rate & depth control knobs 3/4 or more(hanapin nyo na lang yung tama sa inyo)

Tama yung electric sitar effect.  It was also used on the intro of "You Make Me Feel Brand New" when I took notice of that sound a long time ago.

An example of the flanged effect naman na kahawig ng ES can be heard on John Tropea's intro sa "Havana Strut" in Deodato's Whirlwinds album.

Ooooh.. a steely thread. :-D

The songwriting rocks (The lyrics, melodies and harmonies just mesh), the session musicians kill, and that dry wit never fails.

My picks:

AJA, Black Cow, Rikki, Don't Lose that Number, Boddhisatva, Peg, Deacon Blues, FM, Reelin' in the Years...the list goes on.

Yet, TWO AGAINST NATURE seems to cruise steadily minus the 'ooomph' of earlier stuff, musically, that is - Just my opinion.

not really jazz for me. most of the musicians in their albums are jazz and pro session musicians hence the perception maybe. although for me "Aja" might be considered as jazz listening. most of their early work was pop-rock, and later moving into blues/jazz/pop.

It's Larry Carlton who did the lead part....it's O-SAWM! tried to "cifra"...did fair enough sa chords but when i tried improvising over the chord changes...hell, i was lost! The best talaga STEELY DAN...never in my life i've heared somthing like what they play.......somone was asking kung anung GENRE ng steely dan....hindi kaya sila mismo eh GENRE na ng music? heheheheh!

It's really hard to improv over Kid Charlemagne, so you're still ok.

Anybody would like to do Steely Dan Jam II? Last time there was me and 3650guy (Nonoy) playing keys, Working Stiff (John) on the bass and Jim Ayson playing the drums. Kedy Sanchez was also there. Somebody whose name I can't recall now (whew, memory cells not working!) did the vocals.

The jam was played in the newer studio of Gig in Cubao.  Anybody who wants to host is welcome, we just need to agree on what to play beforehand.

Steely Dan is a different animal. Nakaka insecure ang kanilang pag ka perfectionist. I mean, listen to those solos, bass lines... what have you.

Gusto ko AJA (incl. Aja, Black Cow, Deacon Blue) and CAN'T BUY A THRILL (incl. Do It Again, Dirty Work & Reelin' in the Years) lp. Pareho nasa RStone 500 greatest albums of all time.

Try to score a copy of the Making of Aja DVD where the recording process is meticulously discussed and shown. Then you'll say "Wow".

Steely Dan (Donald Fagen and Walter Becker), just like Michael Franks' music is what we all consider, the "Thinking Man's Rock". Geeky as they may seem because they have a unique way of making their music. Although they are very much considered in the the Jazz genre. I had the pleasure of meeting them in person when I was working part time in a San Diego radio station during our annual Jazz fest. Very nice people.

Wow, that was a rare opportunity! The closest I've been to them is watching their concert in Dallas with Mike MacDonald 3 years ago.

Last month when I was killing time by going through the racks of the main HMV store here in Toronto, I was able to score a copy of their "latest" DVD after watching it on one of the many overhead flatscreens on the store walls.  It documents their recent tour which I was fortunate enough to have seen while I was visiting NYC last year.  I have the word "latest" in quotes because I don't think it is legit since wala siya sa DVD list ng SD website (just like "The Making of AJA" DVD; The title of this DVD is "Perfection in Performance", which doesn't sound like the usual SD irreverent titles.  Weird).  As usual the Katzenjammer  Kids were supported by one fine group of musicians:  Jon Harrington on lead/musical director, Freddie Washington on bass etc.  But what caught my eye was this young drummer (forgot his name) who nailed that Steve Gadd solo on Aja.  One of their "chu-chu-wahhhs", Carolyn Leonheart, is one hell of a vocalist (and a hottie as well).  Thank God I've got one of her CDs (Jazz staples and standards).  Michael MacDonald was a guest vocalist/keyboard player on that leg (I don't think he was there on the NYC leg) and his vocals fit hand-in-glove with SD's rock-jazz grooves.

If you have the chance to get a copy of this DVD, go get it.  Hindi kayo magsisisi, though I wish they had included other well know SD cuts (like Pretzel Logic).  Labo ni Harrington - I think he left this out of the tour set.

SD was also here early this year for two nights at Massey Hall.  What they did was interesting:  They played all the cuts on "Aja" during the first night and all the cuts on another album (as usual di ko maalala which one) on the second night.  Nice gimmick:  if you're a die-had SD fan you'd want to see both shows!  Too bad I was unavailable that weekend.

good stuff. it is great that they are still at it. yun nga lang the last live DVD they had, eh si Donald fagen had difficult hitting some of the high notes. yes to Carolyn Leonheart kaya lang medyo distracting yung "hottines niya" i think music grad siya and she also has an album of her own.

I was going through old posts and saw this. Went overseas and a lot has happened since hindi na natuloy ang jamming ... ot natuloy wla lang ako.

Sana matupad parin to. Steely Dan songs give that certain nostalgia of yesteryears, when i wasnt even born yet. Surreal.
