I sometimes rely on word of mouth from others who have used a particular plugin. Often I will see links in mags or sites and I will use them if I think I need them.
Do I experiment? A LOT. Time unfortunately prohibits me from indulging in my favorite pastime which is trying out the myriads of analog emulation synthesizers I have already downloaded. It's getting that it can take Cubase a long time to load; I often have to remove stuff that I don't use.

so when you launch cubase, all registered plugins are also loaded? whether you are starting from scratch or not? or only if the plugin are associated with a particular project? btw i'm not familiar with cubase.... but the time warp funtion is really a great feature.... worth migrating to he he....

Not loaded. More like scanned. It gets worse if you have sample based synths with big libraries. No big trouble, though; Cubase still loads in less than a minute.
The plugin will load only when it is part of a project; sometimes a hassle when I'm loading a big soundset for my EmuX.

It's great when you want to match an audio file to a grid... although I've grown rather adept at doing the same (tempo matching) in Sonar.

and this would be the trial and error method of drawing tempo changes per bar right? so how precise can you draw it? right down to the downbeat? this should easy when time warping because you just move the line to where you think the downbeats are (waveform) right?.....
anyway this method was shown to me by a friend who used to realign an entire song via the draw tempo method.... when he found out that it was easier to time warp, boy was he able to do a lot more projects..... not that i've tried it.... cubase is a whole new ballgame to me..... its a relearning thing all over again

The trick with Sonar is to right click on the wav and use the "Set Snap Offset to Now Time". That's almost the equivalent of the Q hitpoint is Cubase (can't seem to find that in the SL/SX version - it was easy to find in VST 32). I just drag the downbeat to a barline, use snap offset, then insert tempo changes either at each measure or every 2 measures - no trial and error, I can estimate tempo just by looking at the next downbeat in relation to the next barline. I even do decelerandos and accelerandos with this method. You can easily tell if a song was sequenced, you only have to set the tempo once.
The time warp feature in Cubase is almost indispensable if you're beat matching a rubato performance... I've been known to insert tempo changes every 1/16th note. If there's one thing I like about Cubase, is that it's tempo is accurate to 3 decimal places.

Another secret to Sonar? Keybindings. FYI: You can use the same key commands in Sonar with Cubase, you just have to dig a bit in Cubase's preferences. It's one of the reasons I switch easily between the 2 programs.

In a recent issue of Computer Music, they gave away Wusikstation V.1 (a $99 download) for 'free' -I had my sis buy that issue in NY nung nalaman ko. Some local magazine stands stock CM, FM and SoS which usually come with CD's/DVDs; FM especially has a habit of including license-free samples.
Those lucky enough to go to Musik Messe, the German Keys magazine recently included a free version of Samplitude with its March 29 edition.

How about 200 mb drumset then? The Natural Studio ns7_kit free (http://naturalstudio.co.uk/ns_kit7freedownload.html). I'm currently using the soundfont version with rgcaudio's sfz free soundfont player (http://www.rgcaudio.com/sfz.htm) - easily bypasses most 'blasters 64 mb ram limitation. I also downloaded the giga version just to see how well EmulatorX can translate the format... maybe later, the sfz version works fine. :D

Kit, yeah, I am a hardcore fan of the Waves stuff. I own a Platinum Bundle that I bought about 2 years ago to help me complete some audio editing tasks I was doing for a local museum. I have used the bundle ever since and, although it would be good to have something cheaper, the software works very well and - I think - is the best at what it does. Bar none. For cleaning audio and repairing them, the Waves plugs have helped me work on some very tricky restorations. I worked on some Smithsonian archived audio and those old records were old, very noisy, and had clips all over the place. working with Waves made the task easier because it integrates well with Wavelab (my main audio editor) but it was still a long process of restoring the music to a digital format.
Moreover, I wouldn't really compare UA and Waves plugs simply becausee, even if it is for similar plugs like the analog based EQ models on the UAD-1 and the Waves bundles, all of them sound different. In the long run, you basically keep different EQs and compressors in your plug folder to use on specific tracks because there really isn't a one-for-all EQ, I've found.

Angular Momentums (http://www.amvst.com/) is a site that regularly gives out free synths and sample loops all for the cost of registering (free) with them. They have the usual 303 clones, analog emulations; their newest offering is a wave table synth. They also have some reasonably priced commercial offerings as well as donationware.
I've tried most of their synths and downloaded a lot of loops from their site already, but I haven't even gotten to 10% of the hundreds (if not thousands) of free loops there! Lots of good, license free material on their site.

Both. Sometimes when I'm too lazy to play things live, I draw in notes with my mouse and adjust velocities in the sequencer's piano roll view. When using a controller for this kind of synth, it is preferable that your controller has alternative controls such as assignable knobs and sliders for realtime control of parameters. Midi CC# controls are often involved. Conversely, you can draw in envelopes with a mouse to control and fine tune those same parameters.

Rebirth is already free for download here (http://www.rebirthmuseum.com/). There is absolutely no need to have a cracked copy in your HD for this. Even all the mods for rebirth are available for download as well as submitted songs and the like. Piracy was the reason for Propellerhead to 'retire' Rebirth and there will be no more development. So, to all others who don't support software developers, this is a direct result of your activities. Do the right thing, pay for your software so that we can be assured of continuous development and innovations.
I have the Reason demo. It's ok but it screws up my Cubase VST32 because it takes control of 64 Rewire audio channels! :shock: I can't insert vst synths as a result and I can't download the Propellerhead fix for this. Might have to order the full version abroad again. Tsaka na... I just ordered my Sonar 5 upgrade with Project 5 V2 deal.

Lang anuman. Always a pleasure to help a fellow musician.
Rebirth isn't always about synth sounds. Try loading some of the mods, you will find hiphop sounds, house, pati ata rock! Pero Rebirth is mostly dance-oriented. The problem with Rebirth? Di nya kaya ang odd meters katulad ng 7/8 et al. I think kaya ng Reason pero I honestly never took the time to find out.

First of all, unless Roland/Boss directly makes it or licenses the technology, walang gagawa ng direct copy of the Metalzone due to copyright issues. The soft clone will try to approach the sound as closely as possible; some actually nail the sound but can't use the Metalzone name due to copyright. There are emulators that come close to the sounds you're looking for. Among the best is NI Guitar Rig and Amplitube2. Since I don't play guitars and haven't used either product, I can't comment on their sound save for what I read in reviews. Maybe abyss or Baldo can add their comments.
Secondly, plugging a guitar direct may not give you the tone you want primarily because of impedance mismatching. It would be better to run the guitar thru a DI/preamp with line level outs then connecting those line outputs to the line inputs of your soundcard. Some of the more expensive soundcards include Hi-Z inputs for direct connection of guitars bypassing the need for a preamp.

I checked my freeware folder and saw the tritone plugs already there; I can't believe I've accumulated what appears to be 3 gigs of free stuff including sounds for my free copy of Wusikstation (which came with my CM mag). I have yet to try the spectral plug but I'm a fan of spectral manipulation ever since I was able to remove some ghost vocals from a tape recording using Audition's spectral editing. That same spectral editing got a lot of use removing crackles, hiss and other unwanted sounds from the Jam 3 project at the 'other' forum.

Formant-shifting, keyboard-controllable vocal vst. You can use it for some interesting male vocal effects or you can morph the formants for some ahhh-eee-ooo effects. A bit strange, often hilarious, but may find some uses. Must be doing well since they recently developed a Mac OSX version.

REAPER (http://www.cockos.com/reaper/) is now up to ver. 0.99 and is now on its way to becoming a full-fledged DAW.
Get it while it's still FREE!. The moment it hits V.1.0, you pay for the product - even then, it's getting rave reviews from users. If it becomes a cheap and viable alternative, I just might bite. UPDATE: Reaper just went 1.0 beta a few days into August and it now costs $39 for non-commercial usage while commercial use costs $199.95. It was good while it lasted.

Drumagog for the masses? Here's KTDrumTrigger (http://www.koen.smartelectronix.com/KTDrumTrigger/).
It converts audio to midi by dividing incoming audio into different frequency bands allowing you to trigger midi events according to the frequency trigger settings. It will not, however, convert that mp3 file into a complete midi transcription; you still need your ears for that, folks.

It's still in beta so there are quite a few bugs. (Urk! I didn't expect their screenshot to be so large! Sorry to those on dialup. :oops: )
It looks to me like a cross between Freestyle, Ableton Live, and Tracktion.

I already done this steps but some of the effects won't open or work properly. Well if I am curious about this new plugins I open it through Cubase LE and it works perfectly.

@TheHunter - sorry for not replying sooner... the internet ate my post... Anyhoo, you would expect Cubase and VSTs to behave better with each other since Steinberg did write the VST spec while Audition uses a wrapper to communicate with VSTs. If it's any consolation, Cubase 4 doesn't do DX plugs anymore. :roll:
While this is not a plugin, the following allows you to play with VSTs without having to open Sonar or Cubase or whatever... and it allows you to play VST softsynths in realtime.
Might be just the thing for folks who like to perform with their laptops. While you're there, also check out SAVI Host (http://www.hermannseib.com/english/savihost.htm), which is like a lite version of VST Host.

I've decided to add soundfonts because it's practically like adding a new synth or drum kit to your sonic arsenal. To those who don't know soundfonts, think of fonts when typing a word document - you can change the appearance of your paper radically just by changing the font.
Same with word fonts, soundfonts allow you to change your arrangement by giving you a better piano, flute, guitar... what have you. There are myriads of soundfonts scattered all over the net, but let's add the good ones to this list. Here are some links I've found so far:

Don't you need the E-bow for that? Theoretically, you need something like an envelope follower that can delay the attack phase when you pick on the strings, but it will not work on fast runs. Maybe even a Fernandes Sustainer might work. I've read that Sigur Ros uses a cello bow for a real bowed effect but muting the 'unused' strings might be difficult while bowing.

i dunno man, but i used to see a band guitarist that have a multi guitat effect (i think its KORG) and he's doing a riff that sounds like a violin similar to the ones i hear in the movies..
try to click this video, Alexi Laiho (children of bodom) has a multi effect that can do violin sounds..
..so i was wondering since there's a plug in for distortion, delays, reverbs, etc.. maybe there's also a VST plug ins for violins :?..

I hate to say it but it appears like they were playing to a sequence. The giveaway was the metronome and there was a bass note even though no one was playing a low string. At around 2:26, you can hear where the guitar was a little off tune to the violin. I looked at both guitars intently and I didn't see any trace of a midi pickup. AFAIK, the Roland VG-8 allowed you to vary attack times so it gave you a sort of pedal steel effect which if you varied the attack time slightly could get you close to removing the sound of the pick.

my mom still has it, in almost mint condition. if not for the oxidation. rust accumulated in the battery compartment. but still sounds great. i mean for its purpose and size. and yeah about your question, i had that VST before and heard it and it nailed the sound.

this is such a trippy vst. hehe. been tryin to make video game-esque music with it. totally lo-fi zero-bit sound! even the calculator function works. hehe.
but i can't seem to control it with my midi controller thru cubase. been tryin to figure out how to sequence with it. it only responds to mouse control. feel so stupid cause i really can't make it work. hehe.

These vst's usually work within a host program like Sonar, Cubase, etc.; if your toneport has a host program that can load vst's, yes it will work but only in that program. You cannot port vst's into the toneport. Only specific hardware, such as the Muse Receptor (http://www.museresearch.com/receptor.php) allow you to load vsts and play them in realtime... without a computer (since it IS a computer in a 2U rackmount).

The Edirol SuperQuartet has a natural sounding fender jazz bass. You will need to work a bit on velocities and some bends if you want to simulate a bass playing.

Try the BTEAudio ampsims. The only con is that they have no gui, but I tried them and they sound great.
Woohoo! I found another opensource multitrack audio recording and editing suite - Traverso (http://traverso-daw.org/).
The beauty of this app is that it works with Mac, Windows, Linux. As far as I can tell, Traverso is still purely audio (no midi) and it doesn't seem to support vst's yet; but you can mix different sample rate files into the same project! This would be great for audio post... now if only you can drag in different file formats a la Vegas.

This should be in the "What Do You Want to Learn about Recording" sticky. Anyway, have you ever manually adjusted the volume fader (or control) everytime someone belts out a loud note or suddenly decides to whisper a passage? You often do this to keep levels consistent during recording. At it's simplest, think of a compressor as an automatic level control, but it is more than just that. It can lengthen sustain if used properly and it can also cut off the tails of some notes (gating/expansion). Read up here if you want to know more: http://www.tweakheadz.com/compressors.htm

Though I haven't tried it yet, I've been gearing up for either an Ubuntu or Fedora based system with Ardour and Rosegarden for the main apps. The main problem I have is with vst compatibility. It would be great if I can run Sonar within Linux but no go there.

I only bothered to test this plugin tonight. And it's spot-on as far as I can remember. Hahahaha. I used to do this thing which screws with the ADSR mode and changes its sound. If I remember how to do that and works in this plug-in, bilib na ako. Hehehehe.

Usually, compressors, but if you're really experimentative, anything under the sun will do. Distortion is common, as are delays, reverbs and choruses, but you can even pass vocals thru synthesizer filters for filtering and vocoding. Don't limit yourself to standard usage of whatever is out there, but remember, use plugins wisely because at some point, it becomes rather gimmicky. You will find that mics and preamps play a bigger deal with vocals than anything else.

You need a hardware component to be able to convert the trigger impulses into midi, which will then trigger your software/drum sample player. The free sfz player needs a host like Sonar, Cubase or whatever you can load vst's into. There are also free vst hosts that will load sfz player. You will still need some midi hardware that responds to the triggers like the DM5 or similar. Unfortunately, that's the way it is.

I think the error page appears during high server load. You should be able to get into the 'News' page. From there, proceed to User Registration (a bit hard to read because it's in German... luckily, I can read a little German). Once you are through the registration, you can proceed to the download page. I just finished the program proper... now on to the 2 gig samples. I think they will send you a product activation code before you can use the program.

Carl, if you just did a google, you would have found it easy, but Toontrack demos (http://www.toontrack.com/ezdrummer.asp) are mostly audio. As for the other kind of 'demo', can't help you there coz you're on your own with those - no need to mention why.

@xavier - the laptop's inputs are usually line level; they are not meant for instrument level devices like guitars. Usually a DI box or impedance matching converter can take care of that problem. The mic input on most pc's and laptops are another problem. First, they usually carry +5VDC to power pc mics and they use 1/8" TRS connections; the voltage is usually carried by the ring. Using standard 1/8" to 1/4" TRS converters can potentially short the ring to ground when you insert an unbalanced 1/4" TR jack which can damage the power circuit of the mic preamp in the laptop so I don't recommend going in that direction. the better route would be to use an audio interface with guitar-specific inputs, such as M-audio's Jamlab or Line6's Toneports. Unfortunately, I have no experience with these gear so I can't tell you what latency figures you will get when these are used live; these are usually intended as recording interfaces.
You might be better off using a multifx pedal.

These are VST software synthesizers, hence you need a VST host in order to use them. Examples of hosts are Cubase, Sonar, and VStack. Other software that can use VSTs are also qualified. Try downloading Reaper if you don't have any of the aforementioned software. Load the VST into an instrument rack or whatever, and make sure you have a midi controller ready.

There are commercial plugins from Kong Audio that are geared towards chinese instruments. There were several free soundfonts that had asian/oriental instrument samples as part of their soundset. No samples/soundfonts of indigenous filipino ethnic instruments to the best of my knowledge.

there's one pinoy sample library that i found. not really pinoy ethnic but sounds pinoy. it's the anklung, an indonesian bamboo instrument, but a pinoy made the library. found it useful in my compositions. works great with taikos in percussion pieces.

Not really sure how vegas works anymore, but I'm pretty sure that you insert it into an fx chain in the audio track. I'm also unsure how Vegas treats vst fx, but if they have the vst implementation right, you have to turn on some form of input monitoring.

Well, compression and eq are the most commonly used fx for vocals, with reverb coming in a good second. I don't use enhancers very much, preferring to capture vocals just right during recording instead. This usually means matching the mic and preamp with a particular voice.

Some examples are those that do tube emulation or tape saturation effects. There are some good ones, but the general consensus is to route your signals through a real analog summing mixer and re-recording it's output into your DAW to get that analog feel. Some also use real open reel tape recorders or amps with real tubes to get that warm analog feel.

By using this plugin on single drum tracks like Snare or Kick you can replace the sound with any sample (.WAV file) you like. Great if you've tried everything to salvage a poorly recorded drum sound and got nowhere!
If you like this plugin but fancy something a bit more sophisticated, have a look at Drumagog. It's not free but it has a lot more features.

This plugin creates extra high frequencies based upon what's already there in the upper mids. This is done by applying a gentle distortion (clipping) to the upper mids, such that the harmonics generated add to the high-frequency components of the signal.
Try this on drum overheads, hi-hats, flute or whatever you fancy really.
One word of warning, the effect is very addictive. Gently does it!
Controls:
CutOff - Signals above the Cutoff frequency will be processed Drive - The amount of distortion applied to the signal (you need less when CutOff is low) Amount - The amount of processed signal applied.
Please note. This plugin does reduce the overall signal level very slightly when amount/drive is low. This is so that the unit does not provide 'too much' signal back to the host application.
This should be used on single, mono tracks, but do NOT place it in the 'insert' section of the track (Cubase) as this will not give you a stereo output. Instead use it in the Mixer.
One common way enhance the stereo image of a track is to do the following:
1. Make two additional copies of the track 2. Delay the copies slightly 3. Pan one of the copies full left and the other full right 4. Make one of the copies out-of-phase so that the effect doesn't sound strange in mono.
If that sounds a bit too much like hard work, then this plugin does it all for you! Try it with overdriven electric guitar to get that 'wall of sound' effect common to tracks by Evanescence etc.. We think you'll be pleased.
Controls:
Delay Time - The amount of delay Mix - The mix between the original (centre) signal, and the delayed signals
This plugin isolates the attack transient of a percussive sound, from the body (or sustain portion) of the sound, and gives you levels to control the amount of each one.
This plugin seems to work best on percussive sounds like drums, bass guitar, acoustic guitar etc (try it with a drum loop). With it you can make the signal sound huge (less attack, more sustain), you can bring the sound forward in the mix (more attack, less sustain), or BOTH!!
Controls:
Input - The amount of signal fed into the unit (too much will distort the Attack detector) Attack - The amount of attack transient Sustain - The amount of body
Please note. This is purely a MONO plugin, you if you want to use it with stereo material, use two of them!

Not into too much plug-ins bro... kung ano rin lang ang gusto ko sa gitara at vocals na effects... comp/limiter, reverb/chorus, eq, etc. I just saw these in a torrent forum & copy/paste everything that's in it & share it here...Actually...meron pa isang lists at mas mahaba kesa dito sa una kong inilagay... pero baka mapag-initan pa ko o di lang magustuhan ng nakararami. :-D
