« on: February 13, 2007, 09:11:09 PM »
dko lam kung na experience nyo na, pero pano po pag nachempo na nabutas mo sa gig for example ung bass drum head? i chcharge kaya kayo ng bar management? and pano kung madami pang ibang bands na susunod sa inyo, tpos walang pampalit ung mga tech don? (just curious)   :?

na-experience ko na nakabutas ng snare, kung sa battle ka naka-damage, usually hindi mo na babayaran yun depende na lang sa usapan ng organizer. pero pag sa bar, salary deduction yun, ouch bass drum pa!

Well, if the house kit's bass drum batter head is still in favorable condition and the drummer intentionally abused it, then I think it's the drummer who needs to be responsible for it.  Either pay for it or provide a replacement head.

On the other hand, if the bass drum batter head is already in poor condition or is showing signs of fatigue or damage, then the drummer has a stand if ever he'll be blamed for it, in case the head breaks down in the middle of performance.

I'm a firm believer that stocking spare drumheads (especially kick drum batters) should be standard operating procedure for sound system/equipment operators and providers.

Question lang drumster...

Since you're a regular gigging drummer. Did the situation already happened to you?
And if yes... what happened onwards?

I'm one of those drummers who doesn't know how to react when questioned if suddenly we break a drum equipment.
Of course, if the heads are already in poor condition, at least I could explain my side.
But what about drum hardwares like a broken bass drum pedal, loosened cymbal stands, a crack on the cymbal, etc.

In fact, yes, nangyari na nga sa akin, a few times.

Though it wasn't my fault, because the drumheads (in particular, the bass drum heads) were already badly worn out, to the point of breaking down anytime.  Nagkataon, bumigay yung mga heads during our performance.  So I kept my cool.  And it's a good thing that nobody has charged me to pay for the head or replace it.

As an advice, before every performance, inspect the house kit first.  In this case, if you notice that the drumhead's not in good condition, inform immediately the technician or whoever's in charge of the gear before you start the gig.  That way, they won't be able to fully blame you, in case they have that dirty intention.

And in case a drumhead breaks down, and there's no replacement head available, better be ready with your MacGyver mode.  If the bass drum batter breaks down, thick duct tape can be a temporary solution.

Thanks for the answer. :-)

Good thing na hindi pa siya nangyayari sa akin during a performance.

Madalas akong nakaka-butas sa practice studio.
Just this past 3 months, I had torn two drumheads. 1 snare drum batter and 1 bass drum batter.

i just realized how lucky i am na hindi pa ito nangyayari sa akin.
naisip ko rin na it's bound to happen to me sometime, ngayon pa na dalawa na banda ko.
better stock on duct tape and bring it sa gigs.

I hope that when I'm actively playing, this won't happen. If this happens, I have a duct tape in my bag like what PMACK said. It's bound to happen...better be prepared...boy scout ako eh...hehe

may nakabutas na ng drumheads sa studio ko, particularly the tom head and the kick.  i didn't charge them for it since the heads were old.  ibang story though kung kakapait ko lang ng heads tapos nabutas.  the way i see it mejo mahirap makabutas ng bagong heads, and could only possibly result from misuse and/or abuse.

it happened to me a couple of times and i never got asked to pay for it. I guess tama yung advice ni drumster. just check and let them know jst for your protection. Though sometimes, if the sound guy is an a-hole, he might use it against you na baka you said it as warning dahil sa playing mo or something.

Luckily, I havent experienced such. Depende sa situation yan. Pero pag nagkataon na ikaw na yung pumapalo at bumigay yung skin, kahit bulok na yun, dapat ipaalam mo sa management, and try to make a replacement kahit mumurahing skin lang.Pero the best thing to do is to inform them before playing kung talagang isang bulate na lang ang pipirma para gawing O-ring yung drumhead! :-D
So Be It.
