Objective is to emulate a 16" New Beat Hihat... :?
-
bro,
hmm... this is quite unusual :)
pero if you want to get a crisp, closed hi-hat sound?
go or a pairing of two HEAVY crashes:) this would give you a crisp chick but, i think this would give you a "clangy wash" when open. . .
the best thing to do, get a NEW BEAT 14" or AAX Stage :D

parang Steve Jordan or Abe Laboriel Jr project to ha... :-)

actually 18" pa nga dapat! hehehe... paper thin's ata si Steve Jordan eh... a lot of drummers are dreaming for that 16" New Beat sound, baka lang marami nang nag try...
-
i suggest any paper thin or thin crash for the top and medium heavy to heavy crash for bottom... imho, hindi masyado ideal ang tunog pag parehong makapal magiging gongy parang doom metal na ang dating.
-
B. DH Exo top + Myra or Furia bottom
C. DH Medium + DH Rock

hmmm... tamang tama, I'm planning to buy 16" crash talaga na vintage bronze. Yung black metal as bottom, hmmmm... so tempting...
Sa mga nag suggest, thanks!!!
More! more! more!

The above is a good and actual way of trying it out.
I'm not into Stagg pero masasabi ko is mahirap or hindi mo ma-aachive a decent sounding hats with 2 Crashes in those sizes regardless of weight combination kasi malayong malayo ang "Design Profile & Taper" ng Crashes compared sa Hats.
Not only that yung Top & Bottom Hats mismo have Different Profiles compared to each other to achive a certain stick & chick sound . Hats are designed more like small rides in terms of profile and taper which is the total opposite namn ng crash design.
It is for this same reasons why a truly great ride will always make a poor crash and a superb crash a terrible ride.
Though of course there will always be an exception to the rule... that would be more of a rarity rather than the norm 8-).
