Dugs3, may bago na naman silang bassist? i thought si rob trujillo na talaga? rob came from suicidal tendencies so i guess magkaka edad sila. they should be familiar of the old trash metal sound.
i just hope this one do not sound like st anger which is a disappointment for me. last album i bought was the black album tapos huminto na ako kasi i dont like their musical direction plus yun hitsura nila, akala ko magiging stray cats na sila hehehe i wish to hear something similar to the "cliff burton" days. :evil:

is it just me or does the new single sound an awful lot like fade to black?
especially sa beginning... at least the feel of it. sucks na they had to resort to copying themselves... and what the heck is up with lyrics like "Love is a four letter word"?! did James, our beloved metal monster actually say that?!
im really hoping na the rest of the album is better. listened to my apocalypse na din, not diggin it at all. wala na ba ibang maisip na drum beats si lars ata?

Listened to the album na... verdict?
They haven't released any kick ass album after the black album. There were a few great songs here and there like Bleeding Me, King Nothing and Fuel, but no one body of work that was earth shattering.
What I loved about Metallica before is that ONLY they could create the most badass metal riffs ever. That is not the case now. Sad to say this, but i think younger bands like Avenged Sevenfold pretty much own Metallica now.
This album produced no revolutionary riffs or guitar solos at all. No riffs na gusto kong matutunan kaagad. None.
I miss Metallica '83-91... :cry:

Lars' drumming was sloppy for you. Het was singing like a happy camper. Kirk can't turn off teh wah. The drums sound too raw.

I've lowered my expectations for them after everything they've done post-Black Album. Maybe that's why I'm enjoying this because it's more of a step in the right direction that they were actually beginning to do in St Anger.
If anyone is expecting any mindblowing riffs, etc. this band will never be Lamb Of God or any of metal's new breed. We will never hear anything like Metallica's first four albums from the band again. I've come to accept that too.
That aside, I've placed classic 'tallica (Kill Em All until Justice) in the same classification with AC/DC, Motorhead, Slayer, and The Ramones. They've all got the same successful songwriting formulas and have managed to stick to it no matter what. This new one is a step in that direction as well. I'm happy with that development since I thought I'd never enjoy a Metallica album again. I'm psyched since I may just go see them this winter when they play the 'hood. It's intriguing to hear more of these new songs live.

sound quality is ok naman... nothing beats the production value of the Black album though.
to me the songs in the album had some oppurtunity to be great and blind blowing. sayang. it seems like an unfinished album.
the latter part of the song the day that never comes for example sounded like one of their jam tapes before concerts. very rough pa around the edges.... but hey, maybe that was their intent. i did not like it though.
I miss the times when they really put ridiculous thought and effort into crafting their songs (lalo na if they intended it to be epic like. 6mins upwards)
Albums sounds like ok we got some semi-cool riffs, lets slap on some lyrics, kirk put your signature Black album wah sound on and lets just lengthen the m#therf#cker!
But i agree though...it is a step in the right direction for them. maybe i can find peace when the next album comes along. :-)
P.S. all of this Metallica hate coming from a guy who actually loved Load when it come out. While everybody else was hating the new sound and the new short hair look, i was busy trying to learn the solo in Bleeding Me. :-)

when black album came out... it was the clean guitars and drums and vocals na naging batayan ng mga metal albums, sound wise how like Trivium and avengedsevenfold is ripping it. I love trivium with their guitar breaks and twinleads and alablackalbum drum sounds and alahetfield vox. avemgesevenfold is like some gay ironmaiden though, i like it on first 3 or 4 songs but monotony sinks in after afew.
mas trip ko megadeth kaysa metallica, but heck this album just proves that metallica IS metallica. yung sound nila ngayun hindi masyado PROTOOLS polished, more of a live sound. mas lively yung drums and guitar riffs, minsan hindi sabay hehehe and not the usual Verseversebridgechorussoloverse type.
pansin ko lang yung combination ng masterofpuppets meets stanger :) sa sound ne metallica ngayun.
i like every metallica album but i love all megadeth albums! rock on.

dude, like u i had doubts on the first listen pero ngaun im lovin' the whole 75 minutes, trust me it's epic...we really cant expect metallica to be playing as fast as they were back in their 20's, the guys are now in their mid 40s' but to me they still kick the assess of some new bands today when it comes to making thrash classics kahit di na singbilis ng dati..
but if u listen to the new songs like ALL NIGHTMARE LONG, JUDAS KISS and MY APOCALYPSE, they still got that raw power to dish out awesome songs, itong 3 to trust me in time magiging fav sa mga live performances, ung boses ni james iba na nga pero to me bagay na bgay dito sa album nato, it gels well with the heavy sound of the guitars, bass and drums...hehehe, give it a few more listens and i think you might get to like it too..hehe

...anywho, BTT. i do agree that bands should not make the same record over and over... Metallica neved did, even in their early days. Kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, and justice for all and the black album were all different from each other... here's my point though, all those albums rocked!!!
...im not asking 'em to remake Master of Puppets or the Black album... i just want my mindblowing 'tallica riffs back. I'm not losing hope... will wait for it again in the next album, whenever that might come out.

Give the guy some credit is all i say, he was integral to the success of the Black Album... with him on board at least we finally got to hear Jason's bass on the album.
Prior to that album, you could hardly hear Jasons work on And Justice For All.

Bob Rock actually made the turning point for Metallica. He brought the rawness of Metallica to the level of overproduction and corporate music. I honestly like the Black album but for me it is NOT the best Met album. I love Master of Puppets much more. AJFA was cool but the bass was turned down not because of sonic incapabilities, but because the 2 retards Het and Lars chose to lower the bass track in the mix as part of their "hazing" rites.

Why is black album always have to be bob rock's only accomplishment as i read through your replies? Is it because u don't like Load,re-load,st anger? Here's my little observation. They hired bob rock and came black album which is a great album, then came in millions of dollars due to the success of black album and bob rock's formula. Metallica sticked to that formula and as they became millionares so thus motivation in being a thrash metal band faded away they don't want to sound like metallica in 1987 and bob rock became their guide to it. So by that bob rock made a key influence with their arrangements and sound by giving his personal taste and perspective to things. Money changed metallica IMO and bob rock was the tool for that change.

Money changed metallica IMO and bob rock was the tool for that change.
That's precisely my point... bob rock was only a tool. the metallica guys were the ones using the said tool.
he was hired to do a certain job, he did it. did it always work they wanted it to? not always. (i liked Load btw, just saying)
Bob is good at making records that sound really mainstream (polished and "well-produced"), that's what he was hired for. Before the Black album, James really praised Bobs work in Motley Crues Dr. Feelgood record, he wanted that same tight and focused sound on the next album (guitar wise).
Not at all bobs fault if James and Co. produced mediocre metal songs after Load.
So.... im just saying, Bob doesn't deserve all the hate that he's getting right now. Yun lang po. :roll:

yup nkabili na. waiting for the box set na din.
bob rocks the fifth member of tallica and has done good stuff with them. now rick rubin (SLAYER!!!) on board kaya bigat ng tunog nila ngayun and mas raw and energetic. no more protooled music, and G5 mac clean :)

ok lang para sakin except sa Unforgiven III na di ko talaga gusto. pero malaking improvement compared sa last 3 albums nila. still, i wouldn't buy this album. " :-D
I agree with Unforgiven III. Di ko magustuhan talaga e. Pero astig yung ibang mga kanta. I enjoyed the album :)

After several listens, I reckon this CD as one of the WORST-PRODUCED in terms of ultra-mega-hyper-compression. Even the Mastering engineeer, Ted Jensen is disgruntled:
"I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice it to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me I’m not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else.
Death Magnetic appears to have been ruined in the final mixing stage. It's here that all the songs were heavily compressed, peak limited, and otherwise turned into static mush. That's where all the problems lie.
That would normally be the end of the saga, aside from our grumbling of the lastest casualty of the music industry's insipid loudness wars. But suddenly a new wrinkle appeared from an unlikely source: the video game Guitar Hero.
Metallica made its new album available for play on Guitar Hero the same day as the commercial album's release. Because of the game's development time, Neversoft, GH's creators, were given tapes that preceeded the final mix. Put simply, they have a second mix of the album.
This is a stunning surprise, one that will in all likelihood save this album. The GH mix contains none of the heavy compression of the CD or LP versions. None of the squashing, none of the squeezing of the sounds. None of the painful jabs into your ears. Dynamic range is present in the songs. Quiet moments in songs like Unforgiven III and The Day That Never Comes are quiet, and the loud parts are loud. This is a completely different album than the version the mixing engineer destroyed.
The next question is rather obvious. When will somebody rip the GH mix so we can listen on our iPods? It's really only a matter of time. We'll have to troll through the internet for the fan mixes. Even better lies the possibility of fan-made mixes of D-Mag. This is possible because Neversoft was given the seperate tracks for their game. When you miss notes in the game, the guitar cuts out, but the rest of the band continues. This means Neversoft managed to create an album mix of their own, while also retaining the seperate channels.
I don't know about you, but I would love to tinker around and create my own D-Mag mix. Even this idea isn't a new one; Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor recently made his latest raw tracks available to the fans, so they could create their own custom mixes. In our internet age, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see more of this in the future. Games like Guitar Hero point to the future of pop music interacting with fans in new ways.
All of which points back to Metallica. In a perfect world, the band would deal directly with the terrible mixes on their new album. It really is terrible, and I remain speechless that such shoddy work would be released to the general public. If we are correct, that all the problems lie in that final mix, then this is a problem we can easily solve. I would prefer that Metallica themselves handle this. After all, it's their album.
But if that doesn't happen, we the fans are more than ready to step in. If that happens, expect "the Guitar Hero mix" to become the stuff of rock legend, like that original mono mix of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Now, I am trying to download the mixes made through the Guitar Hero stems.

i just heard the GH version...you can find it somewhere in youtube. :)
I'm not sure if the GH version is "mastered" but it definitely sounded better compared to the CD. One thing i noticed though, was that the panning for GH was inverted.
The drums on the CD is intolerable. I sure hope they do something about this.

st.anger= trash metal (although satisfied ako sa drumming ni lars pero sa guitar works hinde, no solos and si bob rock ang bass player nila that time kaya buti na lang me dvd ang album para naman maipakita nila na involved din si mr. trujillo sa album nila.)

Got the GH3 version, medyo malakas ang bass at drums, pero overall, mas malakas yung ripped from CD. Btw, both are 320 kbps. Di ko pa nate-test na i-compare yung nasa CD and the GH3 rip.
RE: Best bassist? Magkakaiba sila ng attack at tone, all of them are/were part of Metallica. Depende na sa pamantayan kung sino ang matatawag na magaling. And mahirap i-compare kay Cliff si Jason at Rob hindi dahil mas magaling si Cliff, kundi patay na sya, hindi natin alam kung gaano sya kagaling ngayon kung buhay pa. :)

I like Cliff not because of his skill, but because he had a very different approach to playing metal. But to say he beats Trujillo, is ridiculous.
Trujillo can do Cliff's parts but Cliff cannot do the technical [gooey brown stuff] Trujillo can do.

death magnetic is actually pretty solid. the cd mix sucks ass big time. sobrang compressed at harsh. yung gh3 mix maganda narin kahit papano, bitin lang sa highs. konting eq lang, swabe narin. pero grabe, anlayo nung 2 mixes sa dalawa. panalo yung sa gh3.
also, on the topic of cliff burton vs. rob trujillo: i shall forever hold cliff burton in high regard, even for the sole reason that riff in "for whom the bell tolls". bottomline is, technique doesn't mean crap if you can't apply it in writing good songs. and wondering about what-ifs like "what if rob became metallica's bass player during their 80's heyday" is a moot point. no one can tell if rob or cliff would've been the best fit (if there is such a thing), or even if it matters. i'd like to think people here are better than the blabbermouth.net or whatever metal site kiddies. so yeah, pointless arguement ito.

I've been a folllower of Metallica since '89. I absolutely haven't seen any write-up saying Cliff would play funk. Hell yeah, he can finger-pick the bass like a machine gun, but his note choices were very guitar-like... pretty much like a 'darker' version of Billy Sheehan. But even bad Billy can't slap and pop to save his life (no disrespect intended).
Anyway, I was just asked to choose. I think Rob IS THE BEST BASSIST for Metallica, in all aspects. He just chooses to be POSTE.

Ok, I've played it a couple of times. It's James Hetfield's voice. It's not the same as before. Nasan na yung bitaw nya? Parang pigil na ngayon, alaga na rin siguro. Pero ok lang, enjoy pa rin pakinggan.
I'm not digging Broken, Beat, & Scarred though. "What don't kill you make you more strong????!" WTF!! Parang commercial ng vitamins eh.. :|

Much better album than St. Anger which I find it as total crap. This one sounds good and sounds like god ol' metallica. M not really a big fan of metallica I'm more on to megadeth but I listen to their songs and I collect their album. I was expecting na remake and remodified version nanaman ung Unforgiven III but it was not. But it sounds ok naman. :)

There's been a lot of complaints about the mixing and mastering of the album. It's overcompressed daw. But it's Metallica man. It's meant to be played loud. And Justice For All... was terribly mastered but it's still a classic.

Dude, IMO, there is a difference between "playing it loud" and 'leaving it loud". And DM was left to be loud, and just that. Clipping is so obvious in all the songs.
I OWN THE VOLUME KNOB.
Statistically, Death Magnetic is quadrupled louder (6dB RMS louder) than Master Of Puppets. But if that makes my speakers sound like they're blown, then I am more than willing to hear them much softer and turn up the volume knob.
AJFA was not terribly mastered. IT WAS MIXED TERRIBLY with much hate to Jason Newsted. Hence the mud to compensate for Jason's 'disappearance' in the mix.

Hmmm thinking about it, that's a good point... I agree. I wonder if this is terribly important to all of those here singing praises for DM though.
And I meant to say mixing dun sa AJFA comment... :oops: I was pretty hammered last night.
Goes to show that in the final analysis, it's not overly critical listening that decides the place of an album in history, but the emotional resonance of the album as a suite of songs. Tunog lata yung drums sa AJFA for example, and I don't know if that was intended, but it's still a hard hitter anyhow.

It's 320kbps and you can really here the difference when it comes to the loudness..Im a bit disappointed though kasi i have a copy of the album i bought last week and this GH3 version is way much better, so kung they will remix Death Magnetic and sell it again with the sounds of the GH3 version or even much better, i still won't hesitate in buying it! Nyahahaha

heard the GH3 version, and yeah its way more cleaner than the album version. i would go for the album version, mejo nawala yung "live vibe nung material", it has more life to it na parang gusto mong manuntok na pader habang pinapakinggan mo. GH3 is fine anyways :), you could definitely tell the difference, say 'load' era clean.

Sits between master of puppets and ...and justice for all. Definitely one of their best. I love all the songs. Dami nagsasabing negative against death magnetic. Pero sino ba ang mas kritiko pa sa music ng metallica kundi sila din mismo. Hetfield is very proud of the outcome, at siya ang may authority dun. Long live metallica...

Yup Metallica's back! :evil: I saw em at Ozzfest last summer lang! Hebigats, they blew every band that day.
I think this was their first appearance this year before they released DM. I thought Metallica showed everybody who's the king that day! :evil:

Maraming banda nagigigng successful dahil sa mga mind creating stuff nila. Pag ang isang banda gumawa ng ginawa na nila nung una, ano pa challenge dun?
cge nga nasaan ba ang LAMB OF GODS na yan? pati ung Avenge sevenfold na yan? hindi nga cla maka platinum sa albums nila. kasi wlang pinag kaiba sa mga na una nilang album.
Kahit ang megadave? naku wla man lang sa kalahati ng na benta ng metallica.
gusto ko kasi sa metallica lagi nilang challenge ang sarili nila. gusto nila may bagong tunog sila. At sinabi ni hetfield nun na ayaw nilang matawag na ang music nila is trash but metallica music.
Common on guys pag naging successful na kau sa mga banda nyo. maiisip nyo na kailangan nyo ng bagong tunog na gagawin.

Astig ng bagong video! Fresh on channel v, good choice din na ginawa nila yung favorite ko sa death magnetic. All Nightmare Long!! Kung ano kinapanget ng The Day That Never Comes, ganun naman kalupit yung bago. Abangan kung di pa napapanood. :-D

i already got a copy and I'm still not happy with what their playing I still like the old metallica tunes way back in the eighties unforgiven 3!? i think it's unforgivable that they have to create another song with that title sad but true.

Totally awesome! Very tight indeed! Lots of parts in one song. Pero, did Lars hit little too much on his snares, just to rest for a jiffy?

the album was a total waste of hard-earned cash :evil:
songs are ok-ish pero sobrang sagwa ng tunog ng lahat ng kanta. the album can be used as a torture device, full blast lang nila yung ipod tapos isalpak sa tenga. malamang wala pang 5 minutes aamin na ko sa kahit anong kasalanan
kung pwede ko lang isoli sa store yung cd haaaay
to metallica lovers: this is an album review thread so im only giving my review. if you hate my review, then you can do the "torture method" i mentioned above if and when you see me :wink:

Some songs are ok, but they would've sounded better if they were shorter..there were a lot of rehashed riffs in there, & some of them sounded like they were trying too hard to emulate old school Metallica..Lars uses the same snare fills too much..& the whole album isn't very well mixed, basag ang tunog ng guitars..

regarding the audio quality,mejo parang sabog nga yung tunog,cant tell if its an issue with the mixing or sinadya kya yun? :? pero music wise,i have no negative comments,i like the album,it rocks me! metallica 4ever :evil: \m/

nung nabili ko yung album at pinakinngan ko,akala ko ako lang may issue about the audio quality, yung iba rin pala,hehe...
