Hmmm i wouldn't call bruce springsteen a country artist per se, although he has done some country-ish stuff like the seeger sessions from 2006, plus the more folk-y parts of his discography like nebraska and the ghost of tom joad. Same with dylan, though he has done a lot of country-ish songs din, especially early in his career.
Anyhow, I love both artists. Bob Dylan is definitely in the top three most important artists ever in my life. It Ain't Me Babe, Boots of Spanish Leather, Girl from the North Country, and The Lonesome Tale of Hattie Carrol break my heart each time I hear 'em.
America and Bread are more of light rock with heavy folk and country accents. They've definitely put out some beerhouse and bonfire classics.
Johnny Cash and Steve Earle are firmly rooted in country, although JC has heavy gospel leanings.. Both legends in their own right also.
As for other artists who are unimpeachably country, there's willy nelson of course, and dolly parton and loretta lynn- all of whom have continued to release great records until today. Fun fact: Loretta lynn's last album was produced by Jack White of The White Stripes.
I love a lot of alt-country/nu-country also like early Ryan Adams, Damien Jurado, Richmond Fontaine... very sad music... perfect for knocking back a bottle of fire water thinking about that girl you knew back then... great breakup music.

Quoted for truth!
Others that are worth looking into: early period Wilco (especially stuff from the AM album), Neko Case, Lucinda Williams, and The Old 97's.

sky blue sky was pretty country. pretty good.
but I'm more into their krautrock-y things like spiders (kidsmoke).
Not country, more folk-y/singer-songwriter-y, but also a great breakup tonic is anything by Mark Kozelek. Listening to his Little Drummer Boy live set now- fantastic stuff. I'm a sad bastard right now,.. hehe
-
Hank Williams, saka Blues Traveller :-)
-
Waylon Jennings! Isa pang badass country dude; drug buddy yata ni Johnny Cash 'to
As for contemporary Nashville country, yung Allison Krause, may bagong album sya together with the great Robert Plant. Haven't heard it pa 'tho, but Plant's been putting out some good stuff the past few years, so baka ok din..
Willy Nelson- isa pang legend
-
The Robert Plant/Alison Krauss collaboration album actually doesn't sound like anything both have done in the past individually. If anything, I could describe their effort sounding like something that came out of Sun Studios in the 50's. Ace producer/musician T-Bone Burnett is actually the third piece of the puzzle to make up this new collective with his sound production and slick guitar work, whether it's chicken picking on a vintage hollowbody or laying down slide-work on the lap steel.
One artist's album I also can recommend is Jenny Lewis. Rilo Kiley's lead vocalist released a solo album a couple of years ago with The Watson Twins called Rabbit Fur Coat. It's filled with great rootsy musical arrangements and vocal harmonies that remind me of The Carter singers.
-

:| Sun eh? Sounds good to me then, I like those early Sam Phillips productions.

RFC's a good album. Jenny Lewis put out a new one just a couple of weeks ago I think, but I haven't heard it pa. As good? She's on tour with Conor Oberst now (whose new solo album as C.O. is pretty good itself)
idol ko si Neil Young
He's a little bit country... like the old song goes, and a whole lot of something else, e.g. rockin' in the freeworld with pearl jam on MTV, or his tours with Sonic Youth. Pero mas trip ko pa rin yung mas mellow country-er stuff nya, like Harvest Moon or The Gold Rush. NY = One of the all-time greats in Rock n Roll.

Ang eagles, sa tingin ko, more of 70s California valley light rock sila than actual country, although meron din silang ilang hits (e.g. "take it easy") na may heavy country influences. And yup, Don Felder yung isang former guitarist nila.

Daming special guest sa bago niyang album--kasama pati si Elvis Costello tsaka sila M Ward at Zooey Deschanel (a.k.a. Me and Him--also highly recommended rootsy/americana album).

I just remembered that I saw this band called Nadine about four or so years ago. They were under Pete Yorn's vanity label and impressed me quite a bit. I still have their album Strange Seasons. It sure made an impression on me. Gotta look through the CD collection to rip this into the iPod.

Also can't forget Shelby Lynne and her sister Allison Moorer. Fantastic music from both of those singers.
What also got me down the path to listening to classics the likes of Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers, The Band, and Emmylou Harris (I enjoy listening to her '92 album Live At The Ryman quite a bit).
-
Hmmm Pete Yorn has a vanity label... But if it puts out good stuff, astig. :-)
A bit off tangent, but who else though that No Direction Home was brilliant? I'm hunting down a jack sparrow DVD of I'm Not Here now...
Anyone watch The Wire? Amazing TV series... and Steve Earle has a recurring role in it.
-
-
Bread, John Denver, Don McClean are all folkies.
Billy Joel will never be classified country...ever.
If those artists fell under that umbrella, then The Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Black Eyed Susan, and even The Allman Brothers should have more right to being labeled that way since they've got more Southern influences than those previously mentioned.

Yup. Some Allman Brothers' songs like "Rambling Man" sound really Country. :-)

-
James Taylor only..is that country music? :|
-
Reba McEntire...although I only like the 2 songs she revived with Kelly Clarkson..
Because of you & Does He love you..
Carrie Underwood.
-
creedence clearwater revival- swamp country ata tawag sa kanila...

Yes, we call them Benguet Cowboys. :-D
I guess may ganung culture sa Baguio because you've got horses, clean air, mountains, and clear night skies for bonfires, tapuy, and cawwwntry music.

He's more folk-pop music/70s light rock, I would say.
-
Lambchop make pretty f*cked up Americana. Really like Damaged from last year. Incredibly depressing music.

I'm listening to Emmylou Harris' latest album All I Intended To Be. She's such a fantastic singer and lyricist.
