typecast's breathe through the glass and saosin's seven years. breathe through the glass is basically an uninspired, softer version of saosin's seven years... in my opinion. don't hate. :P

may nakakalimutan yata kayo... yung ultimate rip-off, "Pinoy Ako" by Orange N Lemons na kinopya sa "Chandeliers" by The Care! pati lahat ng mga "G bands" a.k.a. mga songs ng mga alternative bands na puro G-Cadd9-Em7-D etc lang lagi yung chords.. wala na bang maisip na ibang chord patterns? at least yung Rivermaya nag-innovate sa "Liwanag sa Dilim" nilagyan ng capo sa 3rd fret tapos ganun ulit haha :)

maybe they just sampled it? 'cause rnb, hip hop, rap, etc. sample a lot of songs and [gooey brown stuff]. like, one of the songs from that godzilla movie that puff daddy performed... it was based on led zeppelin's kashmir.

Rage Against The Machine's 'Wake Up' was based on Kashmir, as well.
Damn glad it turned out as gripping as it is.

There's a song by Sandwich featuring Mo' Twister that sounds like 'Wake Up'.
Crap.

almost all of parokya ni edgar's older popular stuff not only contain similar riffs from other foreign songs but have the entire song's chord progression ripped off with a generous bunch of stupid lyrics. after that, they make it their own.... wallet ko - knockin on heaven's door (gnr), siopao n special - creep (radiohed) and loads more... then people react as if it's cool to have a band ripping off foreign bands' songs.... how crappy and mediocre musicianship.... too darn lazy eh?! :?  :?  :?  :?

wait, here's another.... andrew e's ALABANG GIRLS riff is exactly the same with led zeppelin's BLACK DOG.......damn.... :?  :?  :?  :?

Which would you rather have?
A band that rips off a popular song, who doesn't claim it as their own, and just does it for fun?
Or bands that rip-off obscure songs, claim it as their own, and get the credit guilt-free?

PNE are clowns. So I don't really mind.
They're not that 'cool' in that aspect but they're fun.

How 'bout Led Zep's "Heartbreaker" and Michael Jackson's "Bad"?

1. "214" - Rivermaya / "Bakit Ba Ganyan" - Dina Bonnevie ... hehe
2. "Esem" - Yano / "With or Without You" - U2
3. "Don't Let Me Down" - Beatles / "I'll Be There For You" - Bon Jovi

i think hindi ripping-off yung pag nagkapareho ng chord progressions...

isa pa...same chord pattern

oasis' "wonderwall" at "do you know what i mean"

In some cases, its not entirely ripped off, some may have been inspired by  or possibleng nag kataon lang... Most lyricists and writers draw inspiration from their favorite bands, and most often than not, yung lumalabas sa ginawang kanta may sound similar or even have the same chord progression.  So for some I would give the benefit of the doubt.  But I do agree that there are others that really rip off, yung masyado nang obvious... pagtiagaan naman nila to make it sound a different.  It's so sad nowadays, makarinig ka lang ng song na medyo kapareho ng ibang song, it gets talked about as a rip off.  I admit, I've written songs na in my mind talaga ako nag isip, then one of my friends will say, katunog ng ganto or something like that.. purely un intentional... a lot of chord progressions are used over and over and over by alot of different bands but surely without the intention of ripping off other music.  Just my 2 cents! :) Peace!

yung walang kamatayang I-V-vi-IV progression, hehe. that's u2's with or without you and the police's so lonely. sa mga 'sensitive rock' naman yung 'wherever you will go' ng the calling tapos yung the speaks, 'high' <- medyo obvious kasi ginagawang medley parati sa tv e, hehe.

I think that goes more under parody rather than similar riff - or do we define similar riffs to also apply to parody/cover songs?

ah! sorry, I tend to be too serious at times, my apologies. but it's interesting, the concept of similar riffs - what if it's a parody song that is only meant to sound like someone else, but is not a actually a a song given new lyrics or arrangements? LOL. what I can think of now that would be something like this is the Itchyworms song or song snippet that intentionally sounds like April Boy, or a lot of the new "manila sound" bands.

Speaking of which, yung drum fill na ginamit ni Matt Sorum sa Use Your Illusion, puro pareho.  Yun bang (in drum-speak) "3 + 4 e +".  Pakinggan nyo ang November Rain, Yesterdays, etc.  You'll get my drift if you listen carefully.

I remember someone taking out that familiar fill and editing each instance it was used into one mp3 file.  Hilarious.

Hmm, totoo kaya ito?

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?Mode=Archive&Date=11/13/2004

Georgia rockers COLLECTIVE SOUL appear to have "borrowed" a riff from METALLICA's "King Nothing" for their latest single, "Counting the Days".

"Counting the Days" is the first single off COLLECTIVE SOUL's sixth studio album, "Youth", due on November 16, 2004 through the group's own newly formed label El Music Group. The track has reportedly been a Top 10 single at radio and is featured in nationally televised NASCAR and NFL events.

Although the rest of the song sounds nothing like METALLICA, the main riff in "Counting the Days" is almost an identical copy of the opening/main riff in METALLICA's "King Nothing". Listen to both tracks and judge for yourself:

COLLECTIVE SOUL – "Counting the Days" (Windows Media)
METALLICA – "King Nothing" (Windows Media)

A thread on this subject has been started on the official COLLECTIVE SOUL message board at this location.

almost all of parokya ni edgar's older popular stuff not only contain similar riffs from other foreign songs but have the entire song's chord progression ripped off with a generous bunch of stupid lyrics. after that, they make it their own.... wallet ko - knockin on heaven's door (gnr), siopao n special - creep (radiohed) and loads more... then people react as if it's cool to have a band ripping off foreign bands' songs.... how crappy and mediocre musicianship.... too darn lazy eh?! :?  :?  :?  :?

kahit naman yung ordertaker galing sa system of a down.

style lang talaga nila maging ganon.
