When I bought my guitar, one thing that catches my attention is the looks. If it looks good, it is bound to be tested.
Once tested and noticed if the sound is not good, id pick other guitars. But if it sounds ok, then it passed my second criteria.
Lastly the feel, reach and overall compatibility. Some guitars look and sound good but somehow it doesn't match your personality, so its your call. For me I also consider the size of the frets. :)
When I bought my recent ones, there are only two things the look and the sound, that made me choose this within 5 minutes from the store :) and no regrets..the hello kitty strap was just an experiment, since that time I cant find a white strap to go along with my white guitar :) eversince then Im liking it. By the way this is a fender std tele... Im planning to save for a 1952 re-issue, but according to yupangco they only have one unit in the whole philippines on stock now. well i dont have the money now either.

i've had a lot. and all the deciding factors that made me change from one guitar to another is the comfort, the versatility and the look.
minsan naman, may distinct sound akong hinahabol sa pag-cover ng band. eh, i end up: "hindi ito yun eh.."
after all the strats, teles, les pauls, explorers, v's, ibby's, semi's & basses i've had, now i ended up with a relic Stratocaster. it fits my musical roots (the Blues), most of my idols use it and its a versatile guitar (for me) that left a tradition and legacy.

Most of the music I listened to.. and most of the music I wanted to play, were recorded using strats. The strat is the first guitar I fell in love with (an MIA candy apple red Fender strat w/ maple neck @ Yupangco several years ago).. and I've had more playing time with strats than any other type of guitar.. so why move away from what I'm at home with? :lol:

first of all, I consider the looks,
then the tone and feel,
and last but not the least, the price. :-D

It's just like finding a girlfriend:
1. The looks - She's gotta look hot and should look good with you.
2. The feel - The way you make her feel and SCREAM, and the way she makes you feel when you're playing with her.
3. The sound - The retrospect experience.
4. The price - Nobody wants a freeloader.

Opportunity.. A friend traded his guitar to me (amps+cash) for no apparent reason. Unang tingin ko palang dun sa guitar (ibanez rg320fm) gusto ko na agad. Sakto naman na I was selling the amps (for no apparent reason din) and wala pa ko buyer/s. After negotiating ayos na.

A guitar that can do:
A strat=like/tele like single coil, twangy, overdrive/clean sound
An Lp humbucker sound
A guitar which allows you to play slow and fast without much difficulty
A guitar that can somwhow allow you to do tone alterations.
hence, I have been buying superstrats, all with 5 way switches and even one with 7 strings. But someday, I'd like to buy a real hotrodded strat or tele such as a Suhr strat or classic T, modern or similar. :)

1) price. i love ishibashi. :-D
2) feel. kailangan gusto ko muna yung action at response nung gitara.
3) tone. swabe dapat ang tunog para sa tainga ko.
4) looks. wag naman yung barag-barag na. :lol:
factors na di ko masyadong pinapansin:
1) brand. di ako tulad ng iba riyan...headstock palang, patay na. :lol:
2) upgraded. mas gusto ko stock.
3) hype. di porket gamit nya, bagay rin sa akin.

looks are secondary, but still important. i've seen of some great guitars that just don't work for me
in the looks dept (parker fly, klein)
