Title: Choice of nut material!

I am planning to change the stock (plastic) nut on my stratocaster copy guitar. Need your opinion guys. Keep those posts coming. ROKenROLL :evil:

since you mentioned locking nuts i'd go for locking nuts since they hold tuning better but getting them installed are a pain specially on a strat

floyd locking nut > kahler locking nut

no graphite?

a locking nut is good... for a floating/locking trem. otherwise, why bother?

the nut can significantly alter your guitar's tone. better make sure what you're going for before asking for suggestions that may be arbitrary for a lot of people.

i have a floating trem sa prs se ko, then may sperzels locking tuner nako so i dont need locking nut. now what material to choose?

easy answer: graphite or graphtech (not tusq). graphtech really helps keep floating trems in tune, but it's a relatively soft material, so it needs to be replaced every now and then, depending on how heavily you use the trem.

or, if you really want bone, sure. but it'll help if you apply guitar grease or other such lubricants on the nut every now and then.

I like Mastodon nuts.  Technically they are bone but they are fossilized so probably the carbon content has diminished overtime hence making the tissues have more crystal-like structure.  The effect is having more full-sounding vibrations of the strings to the guitar body.  Better energy transfer that is.

im not a heavy trem user, im planning to put tremol-no on my guitar and put it in hardtail mode..

so now whats the best nut material? i want a full sound..
