Title: Megadeth in Manila

Since we are all frustrated & hoping that our favorite guitar-speed-metal band are always just passing us by whenever they have a tour including Japan & Australia... I'm planning to open a topic in megadeth forums, about suggesting the band to play in our home country. We can all keep the topic alive, by posting our thoughts on it, our grievances perhaps & hopefully, Mr.Dave can consider us.
What do you think?

Sad to say, PERA ang factor na nagpaadecide sa mga foreign acts to play here. mga management nila ang nagdedecide kung pupunta dito kung favorable sa kanila yung deal.. Thats the sad truth and until you have the breads to pay them upfront. Walang metallica or megadeth or lamb of god na dadating. Tanggapin na natin yun. kabuhayan nila yun, Unlike dito satin na nagiging libangan lang ang combo-combo sa metal. :evil:

April 1993 Metallica concert in Ultra open grounds, I was there man...I remembered back then when they played Seek & Destroy those rattan chairs in the front row just went flying all around and stockpiled in one place (that is how realized how powerful music is)...Unforgettable experience man...Metal up your ass!!!

Nung Seek And Destroy at nagbatuhan na ng mga chairs, nag-shoot yung binti ko sa tatlong chairs kasi gumawa kami ng tower para makita sila (nasa $600 area kami), at since nagtakbuhan ang dalawang sisters ko at naiwananan nila ang kanilang mga bag, ayun natamaan ako ng pagkadami-daming upuan. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Nag-concert na ang Metallica sa Phillipines. Mga late 90's. D ko marecall ang exact year. Also nagconcert din sila sa Cebu.

well a good thing sa bagong gawa na stadium sa MOA (kung saan nag concert si lady gaga) now we,ve got a venue that'll accomodate supergroups- yun lang naman kulang natin dati. magandang venue. antay lang tayo- biglang dadami na dadaan dito. wag lang sana mga kups ang mag handle ng event, baka yariin tayo sa ticket price.

This info with PULPs name on it seems pretty valid. But i've check megadeth.com's killing road... wala pa dung details for their July schedule, June & September lang. I'm hoping that they're updating it, kaya wala dun ang July.

IMO, the matching genre thing for opening acts and the main act isn't always a good thing. You will never like comparing the bands.

Dude I appreciate your opinion. But what I honestly think, your conjectures are a bit off, and what I think, the reason why our support acts for foreign band shows are as such, and why other great foreign bands pass up on the RP, is all about economics; far from your speculation that the foreign bands have no appreciation of our musicians here.
Case in point: DREAM THEATER. Do you think Dream Theater 'passed up' on the RP because they think no local band can represent the strength of the RP prog community? The Philippines is a great resource for music producers who are on the budget. And WE are the best-kept secret. And to our demise, our musicians are underpaid and undervalued.
No reasonable artist (both foreign and local) would want to pass up a playdate at any place for as long as they are guaranteed a few things: 1) Income 2) Insurance 3) Comfort - relative from one artist to another, both on and off-stage. And to reason out that why DT passed up on us is because "kung sinu-sino lang ang nagfa-front dito" is plainly fallacious.
Dream Theater did not make it here because NO ONE WOULD LIKE TO SPONSOR THE GIG. Just look at Mike Mangini's kit. Can we afford to replicate his kit by requesting JB to give him all that sh1t? Can we afford to ship that drum kit here? No again. Even Mike Portnoy toured with a 'lite edition' kit some few years back in their SEA tour to book more dates (sans RP). Let alone the whole rig of DT. Promoters cannot afford to shoulder the TF of DT and the economic indicators of people attending a DT show are far from formidable. These are characterized by CD sales, merch sales, and spending power.
Now, regarding FRONT ACTS. In most cases, the front acts are chosen by the producer of the show for specific purposes. They can be any of the following: 1. a label or big-shot manager of the band PAID the producer to front for the foreign act to promote the local artist's/album 2. the show producer had an X-deal with the support band, and the front act was part of the deal 3. The support band could be managed/handled/sponsored by the sound system provider, and the support act is one of the arrangements 4. the label distributor of the foreign act's music wants to promote another local artist in their local label's roster (think Gen. Luna fronting for a Warner-signed foreign artist)
COME TO THINK OF IT, you can get any GREAT LOCAL BAND to front for Megadeth. But will the producer spend an extra 60-100k for the backline of the band? Think about it. Dude I appreciate your opinion. But what I honestly think, your conjectures are a bit off, and what I think, the reason why our support acts for foreign band shows are as such, and why other great foreign bands pass up on the RP, is all about economics; far from your speculation that the foreign bands have no appreciation of our musicians here.
Case in point: DREAM THEATER. Do you think Dream Theater 'passed up' on the RP because they think no local band can represent the strength of the RP prog community? The Philippines is a great resource for music producers who are on the budget. And WE are the best-kept secret. And to our demise, our musicians are underpaid and undervalued.
No reasonable artist (both foreign and local) would want to pass up a playdate at any place for as long as they are guaranteed a few things: 1) Income 2) Insurance 3) Comfort - relative from one artist to another, both on and off-stage. And to reason out that why DT passed up on us is because "kung sinu-sino lang ang nagfa-front dito" is plainly fallacious.
Dream Theater did not make it here because NO ONE WOULD LIKE TO SPONSOR THE GIG. Just look at Mike Mangini's kit. Can we afford to replicate his kit by requesting JB to give him all that sh1t? Can we afford to ship that drum kit here? No again. Even Mike Portnoy toured with a 'lite edition' kit some few years back in their SEA tour to book more dates (sans RP). Let alone the whole rig of DT. Promoters cannot afford to shoulder the TF of DT and the economic indicators of people attending a DT show are far from formidable. These are characterized by CD sales, merch sales, and spending power.
Now, regarding FRONT ACTS. In most cases, the front acts are chosen by the producer of the show for specific purposes. They can be any of the following: 1. a label or big-shot manager of the band PAID the producer to front for the foreign act to promote the local artist's/album 2. the show producer had an X-deal with the support band, and the front act was part of the deal 3. The support band could be managed/handled/sponsored by the sound system provider, and the support act is one of the arrangements 4. the label distributor of the foreign act's music wants to promote another local artist in their local label's roster (think Gen. Luna fronting for a Warner-signed foreign artist)
COME TO THINK OF IT, you can get any GREAT LOCAL BAND to front for Megadeth. But will the producer spend an extra 60-100k for the backline of the band? Think about it. When Chidren of Bodom was here, They were very impressed with Eternal Now. That was a prefect fronting band. Everyone was happy and the respect was there, no labelling of a joke. Just respect of it's a good that there is such excellent musicians like EN and they exist and there is a scene. I am so proud and happy for that.
Papi Dogj, i do value and appreciate your opinions against mine, but i have agree and disagree on you on some aspects. This is a good discussion. It just shows that there are a few people who cares for our pinoy bands. I read somewhere, don't remember if it is here or on facebook, that he doesn't care for the front act because it is Megadeth. With comments like that...it's just shows our filipino culture out of the window. In all honesty nakakahiya yung statement na yan. Yes, it's our dream to see our favorite foreign bands in the flesh, but in point, we have to make an impression on the first timers in our country, i bet this would be a first impression on Megadeth, a fronting band na mag tambling tambling sa harap magsasayaw at maghuhubad. Match na match yun. I'm just saying lang. I know you understand where i'm coming from.

For me, iba kasi yung 'pinagtatawanan ng foreign bands' sa 'di pinapansin ng foreign bands'. In most cases, it is the latter. They would spend most of their time in the dressing room with booze while the support act is playing. Yung natatawa sa front act ay yung audience mismo. Like Aiza fronting for John Mayer. She does a pretty good job, but she was fronting for the wrong show. On the contrary, would it be nice if Jun Lopito or Mr. Crayon did the front act? Mako-compare at mako-compare sila kay JM.
Anyways, with front act or no front act, I assume the audience will rush in once the gates open. (No reserved seating kasi.) Ang swerte naman ng front act nitong Megadeth... for sure maraming manonood ng set nila.

Anyway kay guys save your moolah for tickets! Try to get gitna, it looks and sound better, if your up front and personal you're gonna get a stiff neck and the sound won't be that good.

Good point. I agree on both sides. Let's not forget that everything is just part of a business. When a foreign bands tour, they are not just promoting their songs and showcasing their talents but they(lalo na ang bands/artists manager) are also expanding their incomes as well. They want to generate a bigger profit out of it and for them, our country is not that good for a place of business. A lot of factors to consider to generate a bigger profit and one of it is the Spending/ Buying power of the people in our country is not that strong.(sama na rn cguro natin ung mga mga unreasonable taxes that our great government imposed gaya ng travel tax and etc.) :lol: Let's also take into consideration that our country have a poor security system. A lot of foreign people cancel their travel in our country due to some security reasons. What more to the perception of a high profile bands/ artists? On the other hand, hindi nman cguro pinagtatawanan ng foreigners. For me, I think the appropriate term would be, ang babaw ng tingin ng mga foreigners sa atin. Not just musically but also in some other aspects. One time, I talked to a guitarist who played in a band sa cruise ship. 3 months lang sya and na kicked out sya sa banda. Siya lng ung Filipino sa banda. He told me that the reason why he got kicked out of the band was because he had a hard time reading notes. Sobrang strict daw kasi nung mentor when it comes to music. Mabait nman daw pag sa labas ng musica. He even said to me on how he got scolded by the foreign mentor. We are not playing music here the Philippines style. He admits nman na may pagkukulang tlga sya. He kept on relying on his ears and have a hard time playing the piece note for note. For me, I think we should not take the reactions of foreigners as a negative na kaagad. There's always a reason behind their reactions. If they don't appreciate or respect us on what we do, that's because they think that we still need to improve and that they are still better than us.

I can say that both talent + economy will be the deciding factors, and I personally think the fronting band should be at least of the same genre or close to Thrash perhaps. I don't want to see an "Aiza fronting for John Mayer" kinda thing on July 29, hopefully not.
Just to add narin, as a member of Cyberarmy Forum of Megadeth, all four Megadeth members told everyone that they don't drink or charge up with booze, straight edge guys so to speak. Hence, I am pretty sure they'll take a minute or two of their time to listen to the fronting band. You don't also want to see "Satanic-inspired" bands to front for them, nobody wants to mess up with the Modern-day Dave Mustaine and Junior (being devoted Christians and stuff). Not that I don't like Black, or Blackened Death Metal, but for sure everyone knows that Mustaine's stance is on such issue.
Anyways, I got my ticket ready, can't wait. 53 days to go!

Anyway, even Megadeth is not thrash nor speed metal anymore. :D But yeah, fronting acts should at least share the same vibe... not necessarily the same genre. For example, Up Dharma Down fronted for Incubus' 2nd concert here. Layo ng genre, but for me they kind of set the mood for me. Mike Einziger is one hell of an fx user, and so was Los of UDD. Call it a 'boring' set but Up Dharma Down performed pretty well despite the onstage sabotage.

Another thrash frontliner so to speak. But those 2 bands just don't mix for some reason.

is it jsut me or parang masyadong malakas yung bass ni Ellefson at mahina yung guitar ni Mustaine? Could have been better if may speakers din sa gilid at likod.
but complaints aside, overall the concert was an AWESOME experience. Tumatayo balahibo ko nung sinasabayan ng lahat ng "Megadeth" chants yung riffs ng Symphony for Destruction. Sobrang saya! 8/10.

The best concert i've ever been sounds and crowd ramdam na ramdam ko yung mga kick lalo na pag nag do double pedal bumabayo sa dibdib at mukha ko hahaha

2930 pesos well spent! no dull moments. too bad hindi ako masyado nakavideo kasi ang lapit ko sa moshpit and i can't keep my hands steady ang daming nambabangga. haha! pati pics puro blurred but the hell with the pics and vids. ang saya ng experience! kahit di magkakakilala nag aapiran at nagpapalitan ng peace and horn signs pag pahinga mode sa pag mosh. hindi ko rin maintindihan yung mga sinasabi ni dave hehe. actually akala ko sablay yung acoustics ng venue kasi parang lubog yung vocals ni dave tsaka yung mga guitars. nung pinanood ko sa cam ang linaw naman ng audio. siguro dahil ang ingay lang din talaga sa pwesto ko. puro sigawan e. kawawa yung nagcrowd surf nalaglag sa partition ng gold tsaka silver. hehe

as a die-hard Metallica fan myself... I can't help but agree with you. Mustaine is a better over-all musician than Hetfield. But no doubt Hetfield as well is a phenomenal musician :D but Mustaine is in another league of his own.

venue size was almost the same... the DT venue was in a school gymnasium... MD venue was in an concert hall in a newly renovated mall called ATT 4 Fun.

Theory ko nun, since panay orchestra yung pinapatugtog sa pagpasok ng mga tao, magshishift yung sountrack sa choir intro ng symphony of destruction tapos BAM!!! Anyhoo, kala ko tutugtugin nila Tornado of souls or Lucretia. nabitin ako. haha

Alam na nila James at Lars yan kung gaano ka-warm ang mga Pinoy sa kanila dahil nanggaling na sila dito nung '94 'di ba? :wave: Yung "99 Ways to Die" ata ang parang tuluyan na nilang kinalimutan. Sobrang 'di na nila tinutugtog yun e.
