Title: the PUNK GUITAR thread (SUB-GENREs,ROOTS,HISTORY,GREARs,GUITARs & Experiences)
Post by: the_Nong on October 02, 2009, 09:43:44 AM
Yes my Oi brothers! We have our thread!

Throw it in! This thread is Dedicated to the Punnk Genre, weather it's Pop, Old-School Oi, Modern, Techno, Hardcore, Anarchy etc.. We can Discuss sound, pedals, band/artist review, fashion and history here!!

I'll try to post what i have posted in the thread..

as Billie Joe Armstrong said:

"There are a lot of bands who claim to be punk and they only play the music, they have no clue what it's all about. It's not about popularity and all that crap."

That's why we have this thread..

i agree with yearling.. rekta is the best!

but when gig amps suck, i use:

either my relic strat (sss kasi lead namin naka SG na, para hiwalay ang sound) or my H-H strat (kun kinakailangan).

Korg PitchBlack
GTX NG-100 (Noise Gate)
BOSS SD-1 (Stacked MOD) - for simple OD/semi-Clean rhythms..
HardWire TL-2 (Metal Distortion) - versatile kasi, not nasal, from classic rock to metal ang versatility.
Boston FL-100 (Flanger) - i usually use for bridge parts of songs.
MimicMAn (Delay) - for extra body of slow songs or just to add color to breaks.

by the way, Pop-Punk pala banda namin kaya mejo hindi hardcore.. kulitan lang, hehehehe..  :-D

But when it comes to guitars. The best thing to use is:

LP, SG, GAX30s

You must be using humbuckers so that you can get that palm mute thing going on.

sorry man, i beg to diasagree... hindi lang humbuckers.. i can till 'palm-mute' kahit single coils. in my 27years of holding a guitar, i could be wrong..

maybe Johnny Ramone too...

to each of his own.. different stroke for different folks.
just don't put it in general.

yan Hardcore Punk Rock from Great Britain! Anarchy in the UK!!!!

kaso.. Pop Punk lang kami eh.. cheesey..

me too. i'm enjoying this thread. i'm a Bluesman at hear but i play pop punk for fun and i just love the Energy. mejo i'm too old to play hardcore punk eh, kaya pop punk nalang para masaya..

i remember way back in the 80's.. mmm.. 1986 to be exact.. i was in third year high school and the punk scene was so ok! i mean, genres and fashion was something to look forward to everyday! punks were usually at SM north edsa, wearing creepers, ripped jeans, denim/leather jackets, ala pang DM's nun, kaya combat boots pa! we used either Beer or Egg white or spray-net to keep those maw-hawk or spikes up! chains and leathers were present and the shades na parang 'head-band'! whoah.. time warp. and the famous graffiti or vandals we do is usually the big 'A' with a circle around and a matching 'Anarchy in the UK' or 'Hardcore'.. we listen to cassettes then or to XB102. hehehe, dead ends, dead hungy, twisted red cross, GI & the Idiots, betrayed, Urban Bandits etc..

hehehehe.. those were the early days.. sample pics how my generation looks like before?  check these out..

i just wanna share:

Have you ever wondered what the Philippine Hardcore scene looks like in the 80s? Well, there is this great website that have detailed what was going on here in MANILA in the aspect of HARDCORE as we know. This KABAYAN of mine have written what was really happening in terms of the Underground scene here in the Philippines that would mezmerized you enough to reflect on it. I remember back in High School when there was this controversy regarding Satanic Groups that were spreading around bad vibes. One group in my vicinity was named "HAVOC" and this created rumors and deception back then. YUP!! I know someone who was even called on the Principal Office just to shed light on the HAVOC's matter. I may say it was one controversial issue indeed especially for Catholic Schools. Good thing it was resolved. Hmmmp!! There's was even a joke that time that "HAVOC" means HABA BUHOK (Long Hair in English). He He He!! So let's deviate for a while about NEW WAVE and let's travel back again to the late 70s and 80s but this time with a "KISS ASS" attitude". So for my blogpost today I decided to share this article to you guys from that very comprehensive website I'm talking about. PROUD TO BE PINOY!!

or THE PUNK ROCK GUITAR THREAD.

Orignally the word "Punk" was a name of a magazine that was in circulation during the mid 70's that caters to the crowd of a bar in New York named CBGB (“Country Bluegrass Blues”). where the slits, patty smith, blonde, the ramones, television, MC5, the new york dolls, velvet underground etc. performs and were regulars. makakatugtog ka lang dun pag may originals ka, parang Dredd, now with the artists playing, sila lang ang usually laman ng "Punk Magazine", then eventually, when performing, the bar goers/followers call them "Punk Rock".

at first they dont like to be called as such. eventually, it is.. share ko lang.

notice the backgound of the Ramones.. hehehehe..

as much as i like the two bands, kids these days also pretty much think it's green day and blink 182 that started the punk movement, lol.

i read somewhere that black flag reached the peak of it's popularity with dez as their vocalist. don't quote me on that though

hehehe, korek! m thankful though for the two bands (Blink 182 & Green Day) for bringing it out, it's the fusion of the generations. old school sound + modern feel + modern/classic look + fun + attitude (a little lighter though) = their POP PUNK. now, specially blink, they brought out humor to the genre. although it's still popular music & not as pure as "Punk Rock", the roots are still in there.. and also, hehehe, another excuse for me (for my age) not to go Harcore.. hheheehhehe..

to add injury, kids these days often refer to as EMO as post-Punk or hardcore..  beg to disagree.. it's more like Gothic, parang when Souxie sounded punkish in the early days but became deep and gothic later.. oh well..

btw, you're right, Dez Cadena was the Vox during it's mid peak of their popularity.. and later on turned to guitar because of his worn-out-voice (wala kasing training daw..) then later on Rollins step on board.. mga 1981 siguro un.. hehe, i was 11 then..

anyway, baka ma-OT: pedal set up ko is :

BOSS SD-1 (stacked mod) > HardWire TL-2 > BE FL-100 > MimicMan Delay

but sometimes the TL-2 does the job alone! hehehehehe..

have you ever heard of the band GOOD CHARLOTTE? they have mohawks in their first album, quite a nice band to listen to as well. also RANCID..those appeared in the 90's

but regarding EMO i dont like EMO either..

RANCID is awesome! Rancid is Rancid man!! ayus!! hehehehe..

i dont mean to offend but i find Good Charlotte and Sum 41 kinda 'posero' or parang their using the genre to be labeled as 'cool'.. sorry ha.. no ofense..

yes yes yes.
i must say in my age/generation this 2 bands were the biggest influence in musicality and perhaps attitude and my lifestyle.
especially blink 182. gad! blink 182 is the soundtrack of my youth.

but as much as i like this band.
i also embraced their influence.
like blink's biggest influence were bands like bad religion, descendents, cure etc.
more on suburban punk/so-cal type things. execpt the cure at 80's they are at the peak were people know them as goth.

anyways. speaking of bad religion and descendents
even tho' i wasnt born yet at there peak of success. (but darn it i wish i was).
im inspired by the guitar playing of brian baker!
lahat ng kanta nila nsa on-the-go ko sa ipod
since i then. haha

ps:repost ko dito baka magalit si mr.poppunk effect sa kabila eh. LOL kiddin'

Back in the early 80's I have been listening to a lot of U.K. Subs, The Destructors, The Exploited, Abrasive Wheels, The Vandals, Black Flag, etc. Wish that I've kept, at least, the cassette jackets for posterity.

Reading the bands you guys mentioned in your posts made me really feel so old.

Recommended songs: U.K. Subs' "Police State" and The Exploited's "Maggie".

You don't have to be that old to appreciate Wuds, Dead Ends, Betrayed, Biosparks, Urban  Bandits, George Imbecile and the Idiots, I.o.V and more. We once interviewed Chikoy Pura of the Jerks and he told thrilling stories of how it was back in the old days. The culture, language, profanity, and all of the gritty things I could think of happened then and there. It was so kick ass.

lol, it'd be like a UFC match if Doyle and Henry Rollins ever fought each other.

i love the gretsch tim armstrong uses live. right-handed guitar turned left handed and full of dents and scratches.

smartkat, where does one go to buy local punk CD's/casettes? usually it's a hit and miss at their gigs, i missed GI and the Idiots at Ten02 last weekend ):

punk comes with a lot of sub-cultures and genres. usually the punks associated with vegetarian and vegan culture are straight-edge or hardliners. (not too sure about this, i enjoy the music, not necessarily all the lifestyle choices that go with it)

share ko lang

with all due respect to our younger punk rockers with regards "POP Punk" If I'm coming from an old school thought... I'm inclined to think that it has deviated from what punk stands for.. (the non conformist attitude)  Punk is not Funny...its supposed to be abrasive, punk is not supposed to go mainstream....its supposed to be an alternate sub culture, certainly cheezy  is a little bit at odds with agression.

in the case of Greenday, they did actually came from an authentic punk movement at Gilman street (a west coast version of CBGB) but the moment they got singed to the majors and got huge... the scene that cradled them just hated them as much as they were embraced  before the majors. at one point they couldn't hang around Gilman's because Punk fans were going to beat them.

the generation after Greenday, well a good number of them (not all) don't seem to know this original punk sensibilities. i remember seeing greenday for the first time on MTV... i said (w/o the knowledge of their background) this band sounds very punk but not so much in spirit . i like them by the way the whole act and music. and my interpretation of the song "Good Riddance" (years later) is about their separation from the Gilman Punk Scene.... That's just me .... i can be wrong

if you put one "old school" punk and one "pop punk" in a room... the former will butcher the latter, of course it's just an illustration that most old school punk rockers think they have no connection to what we know now as "POP Punk"... in the words of Billie Joe himself "Punk is a lifestyle"....in other words.... Palm muted rhythmic 8 notes, 3 chord root fifth voicings played @ 140 BPM does not make anyone punk... even if he has spiked hair.

I had my moments of punk youth back in the 80's but my lifestyle (as well as musically) slowly drifted inconsistently to" what punk is" so i stopped considering my self Punk by the early 90's (and i think my Punk friends mutually thought so as well).

kaya i can really relate to Greenday... i guess i felt the same way when they were booted out of the Gilman street.

It's basically the same as the Seattle Scene hating the Global Juggernaut of Grunge... they think its a misinterpretation of the "Seattle Scene" which is Punk Inspired

^When you start really thinking about it, that happens to every scene actually. Kahit naman nung early punk era, they had problems with bands signing up under major labels. We have our Yoko too, Nancy Spungen who allegedly killed Sid Vicious (well they concluded that it was his Mom but Nancy was the one who got him involved with drugs and made the "sell-out Sid"). So yeah, punk is punk whatever happens. The nature of being non-conformists and anarchists is what matters. Even if we have these capitalists being so desperate to squeeze profit from any form of ideologies and make people like the non-conformists, it's not a tragic tale really because it happens a lot. I do get your point though.:)

The chaos of it all is intoxicating. :)

Well Billy Joe didnt exactly help in the 'not selling out o punk department', selling out stadiums in front of kids with their moms and dads isnt really punk for me. I mean he can say whatever he likes but at the end of the day to me hes just a dollar faced bastard who cashed-in on the unpopularity of the Iraq war and Bush. Johnny Cash was more punk than Billy boy could ever hope to be.

To me punk(the movement that started in 76 if you wanna be politically correct about it) is dead, it died in 84.

well, to begin with.. the word "Punk" came from a magazine. those who are labeled Punk Rockers nowadays or even after the word evolved were just ordinary bands doing their own things, playing their original songs, giving out a look, streaming their attitude, spiked hair was caused by perspiration, ripped clothing with safety pins were there to hold the clothes itself, three cord progression was the easiest way back when to create music and to get into a bar to play originals... and so on.. now, if it's a lifestyle, he'd be in the streets sleeping on slums or even get jailed, that's a Punk.. an attitude that asks "whatta you got? huh?"..

Punk Magazine was started by people who goes to CBGB and listen to bands like the Ramones, Blonde, Velvet Underground, Television, the New York Dolls etc.. which happens to be the Artists na laman din nun magasin. now as people are becoming fans and also who are buying the print, the regular artists' ROCK in CBGB are being labeled as "PUNK", thus, Punk Rock. at first the Ramones was not ok with the idea of them as Punk Rock, as well as the other bands..

check: http://www.punkmagazine.com/vault/back_issues/01/01index.html

info:
PUNK magazine was a fanzine created by cartoonist John Holmstrom, publisher Ged Dunn and "resident punk" Legs McNeil in 1975, and was the first publication in the world to popularize the CBGB scene. Also, its use of "punk rock," coined by writers for Creem magazine a few years earlier, led to the term's worldwide acceptance as the definition for the new bands that were producing a new sound based on the music of The Stooges, the New York Dolls, the MC5, and the Ramones.

Punk published a total of 15 issues between 1976 and 1979, as well as a special issue in 1981 (The D.O.A. Filmbook), and several more issues in the new millennium.

Covers featured such artists as Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Patti Smith and Blondie. Punk magazine was home to many future talents, many of whom were published for the first time in its pages, such as Mary Harron, Roberta Bayley, David Godlis, Robert Romagnoli, Steve Taylor, Lester Bangs, Bob Gruen, Pam Brown, Buz Vaultz, Anya Phillips, and Screaming Mad George. Punk was an early breeding ground for female writers, artists and photographers, who had been shut out of the mostly-male underground publishing scene of the 1960s.

The magazine staff went through many changes during those years, as a result Ged Dunn left in early 1977 and McNeil quit shortly afterwards. Additions to the staff include Bruce Carleton (art director from 1977-1979), Ken Weiner (frequent contributor from 1977-1979), and Elin Wilder, one of the few African Americans to enjoy a role in the early CBGB/punk rock scene.

Punk was a vehicle for discussing and examining the underground music scene in New York, primarily what would be called punk rock. The music was exemplified by bands and performers like The Ramones and The Dictators. The music was played in clubs like CBGB, Zeppz, and Max's Kansas City. It mixed Mad Magazine-style cartooning by the likes of Holstrom and a young Peter Bagge with the more straightforward pop journalism of the kind found in Creem.

In 2001 Punk was re-launched, but the events on 9/11 set back the plans for a relaunch. In 2006 the magazine was revived, and current issues are still being published.

so, goin back.. what Punk lifestyle? maybe, Punk Attitude..

info:
The pop punk style emerged at the onset of punk rock around 1974, with the Ramones; however, it was not considered a separate subgenre until later. The Ramones' loud and fast melodic minimalism differentiated them from other bands in New York City's budding art rock scene. Protopunk and power pop bands had also helped lay the groundwork for the pop punk sound. An early use of the term pop punk appeared in a 1977 New York Times article, Cabaret: Tom Petty's Pop Punk Rock Evokes Sounds of 60's. By 1977, punk rock had already become a much more active and concentrated movement in the United Kingdom than in New York City. Buzzcocks, Generation X, 999, The Jam, The Rezillos, The Lurkers, The Undertones, and The Shapes featured catchy melodies and lyrics that sometimes dealt with relatively light themes such as teenage romance. Many mod revival bands also displayed pop punk leanings.

By 1981, hardcore punk had emerged in the United States, with louder, faster music than punk bands. Vocal harmony, melodic instrumentation and 4/4 drumming were replaced with shouting, discordant instrumentation, and experimental rhythms. A few bands, such as Descendents and The Vandals, began to combine hardcore with pop music to create a new, faster pop punk sound, sometimes referred to as popcore (or skatecore). Their positive yet sarcastic approach began to separate them from the more serious hardcore scene. The term pop punk was used in the 1980s, in publications such as Maximum RocknRoll, to describe bands similar to Social Distortion, Agent Orange, and TSOL.

true with that idea the old-school punk rockers will butcher pop-punkers kasi hindi hindi naman pure 'old-school punk' and pop punk.. when i was in highschool noon 1985, i saw the real-punk-rock-old-school-oi- punkers, and mabigat men.. mabigat..

i believe that as time goes, generations pass, all genres evolve, transform into something up-to-date-with-generation. and doing music and labeling ourselves as Pop Punk is a choice, and we think if we intend to go Pure Old School Oi Punk, i'd do the genre and call ourselves as purists or Punk talaga diba..

i was born in 1970. kinda 'tanders' to do pop punk, mas lalo na Harcore.. but as the 'pop-punk' genre goes, it's fun, exciting and masarap tugtugin..
kaya di ako nag pure Punk/Harcore Punk kasi, mahirap na eh.. hindi naman ako astig, i just love the 3 to 4 chord riffs, the skinny jeans, narrow necktie and sneakers. minsan naman as modern as the time is.. thrasher look..

my brothers, this is the Punk Guitar thread. welcome lahat nang forms of 'evolved' punk rock.. roots naman nito lahat is what was called "PUNK ROCK".

watch 'Punk Attitude Documentary', i hope that helps with tracing back one of our roots..

Even the things I read in "Please Kill Me" by Legs McNeil seems to say that the people who invented "Punk" weren't even aware or intended to make it into a genre or movement. (much like other genres i guess.)

Proto-punk bands like MC5 and the New York Dolls both paved the way for punks to come, both musically and aesthetically. I guess when Malcolm McLaren decided to cash in on this fad he was in the right place at the right time.

This thread doesn't sound very guitar-oriented anymore, lol. Maybe we should have this moved?

Me too bro, specially pag maganda ang amp.

But since my Band does a sub-genre,  my gear is usually a:
single-bridge-pup strat>SD-1 modded>HardWire TL-2>Flanger>Delay>Amp.. to add extra fun and color for our originals..

Punk rock really does ooze soul. With punk, you get the raw, bare expression of music without all the self-indulgent prog-rock opuses and virtuosity, and a lot of the time, even without the sound quality. But the soul is there, the spirit, and that's what matters most to me.

Love love love going to shows.

I remember seeing The Libertines at a small venue when they toured for the Mick Jones-produced debut Up The Bracket.  I remember queuing up to The Crocodile Cafe's bar right behind a pre-Kate Moss dating/raging junkie Pete Doherty.  He was still soft-spoken and cordial.  I don't think they ever toured under the original lineup after that.

Got to also see Iggy and The Stooges at a festival venue about 3 years ago.  Iggy let most of the front row up the stage and got mad at the stagehands for not letting the crowd up.  The band then did I Wanna Be Your Dog and then asked the crowd to get off the stage in an orderly fashion.  Hilarious!

Seeing Gang Of Four on their reunion tour was a fantastic experience.  The funny part was that the audience was composed of a much older set than what I was used to seeing at other shows.  The old-school punks came to pay respect.

I was also stung by the music of Erase Errata when they opened for Bloc Party when the latter was touring for their debut album.
http://www.myspace.com/eraseerrata (http://www.myspace.com/eraseerrata)

I was also glad to have experienced the music of Sleater-Kinney at a live setting before the trio decided to call it quits.  This was months after the release of The Woods on the Sub Pop label.

Some of the bands I've enjoyed seeing onstage and took photos of:

Against Me! (at Endfest 2007)

the distillers have one hot front woman, wow

dude, try to check out the frontwoman of Vice Squad.. she's a bit hot for my taste on her photos took around the 80's a bit old narin by this time.. :)

on the 'Pop-Punk' issue (i think), well, maybe at this age i would say that i have personally experienced some of the local punk culture here in the philippines a few years back.. with some of the 'pioneers' of pinoy punk and the like... well, in my personal opinion, some of the 'pioneers' here in the philippines will also contradict their 'beliefs' with their 'actions'... :) for example, if one talks and about Anarchism and that of he is a follower of the concept of it, it would contradict the fact that he works with the government (pretty lame eh)... or one would talk and tell that he believes that the solution of our economy is the Barter System which also contradict his belief because he owns a large wholesale and retail of shirts.. :P hahahaha!

lets put it this way, would you judge someone regarding his/her look, lifestyle or his contract deal with a major label that he/she is not 'metal' because he/she dresses up in a prim and proper manner, have a clean cut, wears colorful shirts, friendly, and other things that would oppose the concept of being 'metal' such as trashed clothes, long hair, black outfit (shirts to be particular with big bold band graphics on the front and a screaming band name on the back), sporting a stare-that-could-kill, and an underground scene BUT listens, plays, and loves 'metal' music????

come on!!!!

so lets all stop the whining about other sub genres and 'opposing sub genres of the main genre' and start talking about the most important thing (i think) that would really matter in this thread, THE MUSIC ITSELF........ :)

to wrap up, i think that punk started out as a lifestyle... and evolved into music.. which is eternal and more meaningful.... :)

those Hagstroms that Broady uses looks really nice and it aint that expensive. Before I got my Tele I was seriouslly considering buying a Hagstrom Super Swede guitar(LP like), I think Lars (Rancid) use them and Pat Smear (The Germs, Foo Fighters) use them as well.

Switching keys here, lets admit it the punk guitar style isnt exactly known for being the most technical some may say its crude (I know my style is), but I bet youve heard of Jim Heath of The Reverend Horton Heat I think hes one of the best around. You know when sometimes stuff you hear from a bands record dont really translate well live, well I tell you goin to one of his shows like hearing his record but gazillion times louder.

dude, try to check out the frontwoman of Vice Squad.. she's a bit hot for my taste on her photos took around the 80's a bit old narin by this time.. :)

on the 'Pop-Punk' issue (i think), well, maybe at this age i would say that i have personally experienced some of the local punk culture here in the philippines a few years back.. with some of the 'pioneers' of pinoy punk and the like... well, in my personal opinion, some of the 'pioneers' here in the philippines will also contradict their 'beliefs' with their 'actions'...

@death by exposure
well to be honest, Im not a punk but I listen to all kinds of music. I listen to punk music too, but wearing mo-hawk and leather jackets does not go along with my personality, where I am a peace loving creature. I just noticed that punk music, is a type of music that is simple and If one would compose a song, punk is the easiest to do. well musicality it does not require that much technicalities only attitude and thats cool.

@the nong, your strat set-up reminds me of a hello kitty guitar set-up..so hello kitty guitar can be used for punk too :)

@24242009

that would be the point of my post sir... :) we must all (in any genres) prioritize THE MUSIC ITSELF and not other factors that is related with it... :) just my personal opinion... :) peace! :)

@the nong

i really dig Fender guitars that are modified for this music!!! aside from Tom Delonge and Deryck Whibley modifying their 'Casters, i really love the modification Steve Klein (New Found Glory) did to his Jazzmaster!!!!

1 pickup, 1 knob and a fixed bridge!!

THIS WOULD BE MY NEXT DREAM PROJECT GUITAR!!!!!

great videos!
btw, share ko lang, i used to have this two years ago. got it from juggs & modified a little bit plus i changed the pup & tuners.. but i had to sell it because of financial reasons.

yep, it's an epiphone les paul junior. just like Billie Joe's. great guitar! simple, slick body and great neck shape..

fortunately, my uncle's going back here from the US and i pre-ordered another one, but will still have to change the Pickguard t tortoise, tuners to gotoh or grover or sperzels, pots to 500k and 250k and humbucker-sized p90 pups.. another project this December..

wheaw thats 1 hell of a sexy axe.!
haha nyways i never tried using lp jr. mas magaan ba siya sa ordinaryong lp?
i mean still heavy pa din ba?
kc i used to owned 1 lp special II,nagamit ko siya almost 2yrs narin. kaso its breakin' my back. i got back problems coz of it. im a very low guitar player kasi eh. as in todo ung strap sa dulo. (madali kasi mangawit kamay ko when medyo mid level ung guitar kapag nag papalmute)
aun kaya im using modified strats and and es333. which is magaan kasi semi hallow naman.

pareho siya ng feel like the SpecialII, pero a bit lighter. a little thicker ang neck. that was my 1st Les Paul.. i like it kasi it's different from a traditional Les Paul.. hehehehe.. it's a great buy! worth it!

my posts from: http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,149842.25.html

i agree with yearling.. rekta is the best!

but when gig amps suck, i use:

either my relic strat (sss kasi lead namin naka SG na, para hiwalay ang sound) or my H-H strat (kun kinakailangan).

Korg PitchBlack (wala pa)
BOSS SD-1 (Stacked MOD) - for simple OD/semi-Clean rhythms..
HardWire TL-2 (Metal Distortion) - versatile kasi, not nasal, from classic rock to metal ang versatility.
Boston FL-100 (Flanger) - i usually use for bridge parts of songs.
MXR 6-band EQ (wala pa) - as booster
MimicMAn (Delay) - for extra body of slow songs or just to add color to breaks.

by the way, Pop-Punk pala banda namin kaya mejo hindi hardcore.. kulitan lang, hehehehe..  :-D

sorry man, i beg to diasagree... hindi lang humbuckers.. i can till 'palm-mute' kahit single coils. in my 27years of holding a guitar, i could be wrong..

maybe Johnny Ramone too...

to each of his own.. different stroke for different folks.
just don't put it in general.

yan Hardcore Punk Rock from Great Britain!

PROUD TO BE PINOY!!

by: DR. STIRRING RHOD

http://docmuzic.blogspot.com/2008/10/philippines-80s-hardcore.html

or THE PUNK ROCK GUITAR THREAD.

Orignally the word "Punk" was a name of a magazine that was in circulation during the mid 70's that caters to the crowd of a bar in New York named CBGB (“Country Bluegrass Blues”). where the slits, patty smith, blonde, the ramones, television, MC5, the new york dolls, velvet underground etc. performs and were regulars. makakatugtog ka lang dun pag may originals ka, parang Dredd, now with the artists playing, sila lang ang usually laman ng "Punk Magazine", then eventually, when performing, the bar goers/followers call them "Punk Rock".

at first they dont like to be called as such. eventually, it is.. share ko lang.

notice the backgound of the Ramones.. hehehehe..

hehehe, korek! m thankful though for the two bands (Blink 182 & Green Day) for bringing it out, it's the fusion of the generations. old school sound + modern feel + modern/classic look + fun + attitude (a little lighter though) = their POP PUNK. now, specially blink, they brought out humor to the genre. although it's still popular music & not as pure as "Punk Rock", the roots are still in there.. and also, hehehe, another excuse for me (for my age) not to go Harcore.. hheheehhehe..

to add injury, kids these days often refer to as EMO as post-Punk or hardcore..  beg to disagree.. it's more like Gothic, parang when Souxie sounded punkish in the early days but became deep and gothic later.. oh well..

btw, you're right, Dez Cadena was the Vox during it's mid peak of their popularity.. and later on turned to guitar because of his worn-out-voice (wala kasing training daw..) then later on Rollins step on board.. mga 1981 siguro un.. hehe, i was 11 then..

anyway, baka ma-OT: pedal set up ko is :

BOSS SD-1 (stacked mod) > HardWire TL-2 > BE FL-100 > MimicMan Delay

but sometimes the TL-2 does the job alone! hehehehehe..

wow man..may mga mp3 ka ba ng punk bands nung 80's pa?sayang 1988 na ako nabuhay,di ko na naabutan

haha axe to fall is a great record. i can pm you the link to the album leak if you want.

punk was abrasive, undigestable, loud, violent and most of all, smart and independent back in the 70s and 80s. i only think converge are more than worthy of those same adjectives.

btw, my setup consists of the following:

Guitar> compressor >  signal splitter>

and signal is split into two:

a: splitter> liptone diablo distortion > amp1
b: splitter> liptone Jcm800 distortion >  amp2

amp1 is where i get my low and low mids. amp2 would by my treble and presence amp. on the assumption that each venue has at least two amps. i learned this from analyzing converge's live setup.

im currently using our vocallists mustang.

there is. hardcore is still punk anyway. and some punk kids go to hardcore shows. there are a lot of punk shows here in mindanao though.

about being recognized... recognized as what? remember that punk during the late 70s gained mainstream popularity. which was ironic at that time because the censorship of certain radio stations became bypassed so that stations could get more listeners from the ever growing punk crowd.

there are tons of punk bands that never made it to the mainstream. Articles of faith has got to be one of the most slept on bands in punk history. theyre too good to pass up.

i may not have lived during those times, but i think i can say na mahirap ulitin yung nangyari 20 years ago. iba na context natin ngayon eh. though there are a lot of political issues that can be tackled, sometimes complaining in the form of playing punk songs wont work anymore. i believe we have to show them how wrong they are by actually being smart about our political stands rather than just play the victims and complain and complain and complain.

or kung di nyo trip ang pulitika, theres always our emotions. (lulz)

20years ago? well, i was in 2nd year high school then.. and hardcore was definitely there.. when i learned about punk rock at that time, i knew people that does the lifestyle and it is really an attitude! i saw the fashion, the music and the bands. minsan nagpapatugtog pa ang XB102 ng mga undergound music nuon which made the hardcore scene quite 'there' in the air..

i've attended some hardcore gigs and to be honest, the 1st gig i went to was amazing, i saw real bands playing hardcore deep, ang lalim ng pinanggagalingan ng tunog at diko alam kung san nila hinugot un, pero astig!  but on the 2nd gig ganun din music but it made me think twice about this gig. the crowd was rowdy, magulo, mainit at may mga dalang kadena na naka pulupot sa fist and pag slamman' na, kundi siko tatama sa muka mo, ung kamao na may kadena! heheh, at may nakikita akong upuan na lumilipad, nakawan ng creepers, combat boots at may mga durugistang naghahamon ng away pag napikon sa slam dance.. hehehe..

from there, i took it na mejo diko kaya. thinking i was 15 years old then..

mga kapatid, when i play the Blues, my guitar is on a mid part of my body. naks, serioso..

but now with my pop punk band.. it's low enough for me to strum, to power stance and to move around.. iba kasi feeling pag may kasamang "look" ang performance eh.. masaya at hataw sa gana...

mine, i use seymour duncan's invaders to my strat and gibson dirty finger sa es333.
kung sa strat naman if low budget try squires. medyo maganda ang quality regarding with its price.
if my budget theres always fenders :)

with regarding sa coils and humbuckers its another story. nasa tao na yan kung anu taste.
kasi my pop-punk na they use regular coils etc. merun din naman gumagamit ng mga humbs.

hehe test your sound brother! tignan mo kung san ka kumportable!

as for me, i'm currently using mini-humbuckers.. its almost as close as the sound of a P90.. :) but i will definitely say that a humbucker that is coil-tapped will be the best option for me.. :) best of both worlds.. :)

ok naman lahat. depende ss sound na gusto mo lumabas. personally, depende sa song. old thin classic punk rockish-new wave-alternative-70's punk sound, single coil ako. pero pag bigatan, chuga-chuga mala blink-distillers-greenday-etc sound, ung strat ko na humbuckered bridge..

p90 + marshall jcm800 = win

a nice cheap p90 guitar would be the SX les paul special. its being sold at 7k sa jb. and an equivalent of the jcm800 would be markv's shredhead. stig yun.

though im sticking with the converge setup(bright tonewood, emg pickups, split signal to a bright and dark dist/amp.)

chika lang... umalis drummer namin but we are currently enlisting the help of a friend who is a monster at drums. its a major turning point sa sound namin :D

This is just a punk rock song
Written for the people who can see something's wrong
Like ants in a colony we do our share
But there's so many other f$$$n' insects out there
And this is just a punk, rock, song!
BAD RELIGION

Good ol' Mike Ness and Social D! Favorite ko yung Faithless at Winners And Losers out of the Sex, Love and Rock N' Roll record , at ang walang kamatayang Ball And Chain dun sa self titled record nila.

They didnt invent Cow Punk and yes their cover of Ring of Fire is one of the best Cash song cover out there. Like Cow Punk? Check out Mikes Ness' solo effort youll find a honky tonk version of Ball and Chain.

Listening to Social D makes you GAS for a LP gold top with P-90s or an LP junior!

New record out I think early or mid next year.

You guys should also check out Ted Leo And The Pharmacists.  They're one of my favorite left-wing political punk groups.  They're so inspired by The Clash in a sense that they try much as possible to change dynamics and mood for every song they do.  They're also one of the best live bands I've ever seen.

Examples:

Bomb Repeat Bomb

Shake The Sheets (this song was my first exposure to the band...which led me to pick up the Shake The Sheets album...which helped me get through 8 years of the crappy Bush administration along with Sleater-Kinney's album One Beat)

No prob, man.  The band is ready to release a new album in 2010.  Sabi ni Ted sa mga interview, 80's hardcore daw ang influence niya this time around.

To tie this to the topic, I'll have to admit that I really like Ted's silver finish Fender amps played at the band's live performances.

If you like something even more left leaning than TL&TP, you'd want to check out Against Me!

These guys from Florida are Crass devotees that earlier in their career were signed to Fat Wreck Chords and railed against consumerism and the US right-wing agenda.  They started getting mainstream attention with the Butch Vig-produced album New Wave.  This record was also my first taste of what the band was like.  I really like their Billy Bragg-influenced folk/punk hybrid.  I've been to a couple of their shows and they are really damn fantastic performers.  It's also great to hear the audience know the songs and sing along to their choruses.  Let's just say that it's like going to church service.  I think this band is also busy getting a record out for 2010.

Here are some tunes for the curious:

Cliche Guevarra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RE4E0KLXrY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RE4E0KLXrY)

Up The Cuts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCzK6j2I2v4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCzK6j2I2v4)

BTW, I also like the sounds that come out of their Orange/Hiwatt stacks.

kung matuloy ang EB and may jamming, count me in for descendents, circle jerks, wasted youth, private stock, dead ends, dead kennedys songs. :-D

Punk DIY ethics talaga. Speaking of DIY ,I tried to install a Quarter Pound bridge pup for my tele and I totally eff'ed it up! But i stumbled upon Iron Gear pups, bought a stacked pup for the bridge and im very satisfied with the sound and the price, its a bit cheaper then Seymour Ds.

OT: I hate these people na nagpapagupit ng mohawk na they don't even know na it's associated sa punk music. Ex: yung bassist namin na kasama yung officemate nya, sumakay sila ng elevator then may nakasabay sila na naka-mohawk, nagreact yung officemate nya na "Oi! Oi! Oi!" After that naring nila sa earphone na sobrang lakas na lady gaga pinapakinggan, [pichapie] pala.  <_<

It was so kick ass.

and yeah, punks not dead, man. It's still very much alive. Kicking and screaming.

NICE!! namiss ko yang mga tapes na yan ah ,lalo yung nasa ibabaw he he he G.I. + idiots pa din!!!!

That's Tommy Tanchangco. he was the guitarist for the band Third World Chaos and the founder of Twisted  Red Cross record label. He manages artists like Kitchie Nadal and Barbie Almabis (?).

cleared... thank you guys!   i did some repair & tech jobs for his son's pedalboard for free sometime late last year.. a very generous guy indeed but for me it's more of a pleasure helping out people who we looked-up when we were just a little kid starting building our passion in music.. eventhough i chose not to get the pay, i hope it didn't  made wrong impressions... sir tommy was one of those pioneer in punk rock genre here in the philippines... it was a total struck for me  :)

My drummer told me Leftover Crack (if I remember correctly, maybe it was some other punk band) were assholes. Punk laid down the foundation for how I write for all of my projects.

As for my current rig, this:

Love your geetars, pedal boards bit too complicated for me tho, Im not sayin its not nice.

Id love to post photos of my stuff but im an old fart and i dunno how to do it.

Haha, I didn't get the pedalboard idea from playing punk though. For punk, it's usually just me into an amp but since my only amp is a clean amp now I get my dirt from pedals.

Dude, just go to tinypic.com or something and upload your photo. It'll ask you to verify your upload then just get the [ img ] link afterwards. It's right there, it'll say "link for forums" or something. Just copy that here.

I just wanna share some of the stuff I use. This not to brag but to give idea to those who are starting to form a punk rock band. Check nyo po, crappy punk rock band ko: www.facebook.com/katumbal www.soundcloud.com/katumbal Thanks  :-D

This Marshall MG100DFX amp is my main amp na ginagamit sa gigs. Linagyan ko rin ng casters para hindi mahirap dalhin. I like this because its cheap, its a solid state amp, so hindi problema sa travel at sa Punk Gigs(hehehe). The tone doesn't bother me at all..hehehe...hindi lng cguro ako tone conscious . I also like this because its very loud...and has a line out function hindi ko na kailangan ng mic sa malalaking gigs and I also use this para ma stereo sa ibang amp sa venue since ako lng gitarista sa banda. I used to bring pedals also pero hindi na ngayon. Lahat ng tone ko galing sa amp na to (My Distortions Delay and  Flange). Love it or hate it but overall this amp works for me. :-D

Eto naman, sometimes i use this in small local bar gigs na walang masyadong kasamang banda. mga 1 to 3 bands na gigs. Since this is a very clean sounding amp, I use an MXR classic distortion  to boost its front end.

Ayos tong thread na to, buti na-up ulit.
