Title: expression or by the book (note for note)
Post by: 24242009 on November 28, 2009, 08:36:02 PM
anong mas ok sa inyo? by the book o freedom of expression?

NR=1
itong bandang ito, kumpara ibang gitarista hindi sila ganun kagaling..pero maganda
ang music.

pati itong banda na ito
siguro pipintasan ng karamihan ang pag-gitara nito pero mganda pa rin..

BTW original songs ang mga kanta nila

pag bookish ba nakakasira ng freedom of expression? kasi puro standard ang kilos ng pagtugtog?

IMO, kelangan natin din ang mga lesson na galing sa book or in any other resources of guitar information pero it does not mean na we are going to stick to scales and blah blah blah. Syempre mas dapat pag-igihin ang expression kasi hindi natin yun basta nababasa sa mga books or in any reading materials.

Learning stuff thats technical never made anyone worst. It just exposes you to new things. No one ever lost freedom by learning more.

The one thing that makes you a great guitarist is your expression.

This is just my opinion - real musical freedom comes from artistic discipline. Learning from the book is only deepening your horizons for self expression. It's like language - you can never learn too many words. The more you know, the more you can use.

there is no guitarist who just simply plays by the book.
it is written in the metaphorical "book" to express yourself using the "book" itself.
in other words, playing by the book, is technically expression.

The freedom of expression is a wonderful privilege for us as a guitarist, can you imagine if we where like robots? we are controlled not by our feelings. It's like eating burger without ham LOL. That's what makes us unique from one another, it is because, expression will reveal your style although we have similar genres, but we have all unique style in playing guitar. Music is science and art. Art means "based from your own perception"

siguro yung by the book eh doesn't mean walang expression. parang programming lang yan eh. bibigay sayo yung syntax pero ikaw bahala kung pano mo gagamitin sa paggawa ng program.

I heard the extremes of this:

From the far right: I talked to a musician from the old school about Steve Morse as the new Deep Purple guitarist...goes like this

Him: Hindi magaling yung bagong guitarista ng Deep Purple
Me: Ows? Eh galing Kansas yan at Dixie Dregs
Him: Ay, walang natutunan sa dalawang banda na yun?
Me: Bakit?
Him: Kasi di niya pinaplaka ang mga adlib ni Ritchie Blackmore
Me: Kahit si Blackmore di niya pinaplaka ang mga solo niya live
Him: Kaya pala puro isa dalawang araw lang ang tinutugtog nila sa mga ibang bansa at di 6 months. Kasi dapat ang ginagawa nila pag tumugtog live, walang pinagkaiba sa plaka.

The other extreme, from a certain blues guitarist I read in guitar player

"I don't need to know lots of scales. In fact I can say a world of feelings with one bent note!"
