Post by: tWoKp. on June 09, 2006, 05:13:27 AM
Come on lets start sharing our setups, its inspiring lookin at different setups specially home studios. I'll start of with mine. Pretty basic but effective ya get me!8)

Im 18 yrs. old and im about to finish my music production course this July. I got plans taking all the things i've learn back home (Baguio City) prob after i sort out my vocal chain, ship them all back home and start making music with ya'll! :D

I've been doing partime as an assembler on a light engineering company. Nope i didnt get anything from my parents except for my bedroom. Im d one who painted the room aswell, i've learned a lot of things growing up in Philippines that most kids here in england wont even touch, so yeah im blessed!

Here's my old arrangement

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/2434/sidedeck4on.jpg
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/6828/main4jn.jpg

Rearranged setup (I feel more comfy with this arrangement, i dnt have to stand up when im sampling records)

Things i'm planning to get this summer: (I need a job too! )

It's funny how a clean table/environment attracts so much stuff, as is my case! I'd be remiss not to mention that my 'work table' is a converted keyboard pipe stand holding up my crt, monitors, sound modules, audiodock, and keyboard controller. Over time, it has become a magnet for all sorts of stuff.

Seeing ur pics tells me that I better start organizing my workspace again. Just a word of advice about your setup, though. You might want to move/position your monitors further from the wall and add a bass trap in the corner. The diagonal positioning, however, is genius!

yeah the workspace has a huge effect on the creative side too. When i was having a creative block dats when i started rearranging my setup, burning scented candles, dim lights helps too. After that WOW! im workin like my mom (u dnt knw about my mom!lol!)

i didnt wanna touch the acoustics yet coz im gonna be movin everything to the garage soon hopefully its gonna get done before i go phil.

I can't recall if the Truths were rear ported; if they are, they should be at least a foot away from the wall. You can also get a couple of those Auralex bass trap wedges and blue tak them to the wall if you want a temporary solution. You might also want a couple of diffusers on the walls near the monitors. Use the 'mirror' method. Have a friend move a small mirror along the wall while sitting in your mix position. Mark the position where you can see the cones in the mirror - that's where you position the diffusers. Considering your present position, chances are they will be quite close to the monitors, if not beside.

The truths are front ported, its got a room compensation switch at the back where mine is set to -6dB Corner. Its got three swtiches -2db (Wide for wide rooms) -4dB (Narrow) -6dB (Corner). AHH the infamous mirror method!haha i actually use to have egg boxes on the first reflection points but took them coz it just looks ugly!  i'll try the blue tak auralex combi

i knw its hard to get a decent job there. And i meant work as in like take everything i've earned and learned then maybe start an indie label work with different artists. Im all about the love for the music. Pero ngayon kinukumpleto ko pa yung setup ko before i plan on moving back there.

Hows the music scene back there? i mean is it hard to break in?

Expect ko kamukha ng 201 ang 101... medyo iba ang layout kaya di ko nakilala. Gwaps pa ng Motu ah! 192 khz... dapat naka 500 GB HD ka na.

kitC i was thinking of a Raptor HD. OK daw sabi ng isang MASTER dito hehehe. i saw one last week... ala pang client ko nasa cali pa eh.. pag balik next week..

Medyo overkill ang RAID for audio. Ang kailangan mo lang ay adequate backup procedures... burn to DVD!

Post by: BALDO on September 06, 2006, 09:42:37 PM

how does the UA pre's compares to the Grace? siguro mas thicker sounding yung UA....what do u usually use for vocals? and parehas ba yung pres sa grace 101 at 201
Title: Home Studio Pics Thread
Post by: BALDO on September 06, 2006, 09:50:31 PM
Title: Home Studio Pics Thread
Post by: BALDO on September 06, 2006, 09:53:47 PM
mas warmer yung UA kasi tube preamp yun.. yung grace e solid state.. medyo maingay yung UA dahil sa circuitry pero it gives warmth lalo na kapag DAW ang recording media mo at hindi analog tape. pero kung ribbon mics mas ok yung Grace kesa sa UA dahil GAIN hungry yung ribbon mic.
Title: Home Studio Pics Thread
Post by: abyssinianson on September 06, 2006, 11:35:41 PM
yeah, the UA pres are nice but you have to watch the gain on them kase ang headroom is not very high, the (Avalon) 737sp has a bit higher headroom by comparison. On the plus side, the coloration of the signal especially if you run the resulting signal through an LA or some kind of tube comp, the sound is very warm, parang in-your face talaga.  I don't own a Grace pre pero I know it is very clean from having used the 201 before. If you want a clean - very clean - sound to make dry recordings with, the Grace is the way to go. It is priced very competitively too.

Na-qualify ako for automatic upgrade to Sonar6 pano I waited until August to upgrade to Sonar5, tapos I was able to get Project5 V2 with the deal, all for $149 - very long story but the moral is, it pays to be patient (and adamant at the same time).

They'll be shipping S6 real soon.

Jepoy,
Nice setup... curious of your new setup.

By the way I noticed that you have Multimix 12FW in silver not in black, is this an older or new model? Also your PC case you left it open, just wonder how much fan noise you get if it is open.

TheHunter, that's not an LCD monitor. Well, it is, but it's actually my desktop workstation. It's the entire computer. :)

Signal chain is Guitar -> Toneport UX1 -> DAW -> output speakers. The midi controller is used for putting in notes and for controlling effects parameters in the DAW.

-Rackmount cabinet: mainly holds whatever outboard is directly used by the PT rig
(http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/miclumayag/mystudio.jpg)
-Artsy fartsy pics: L to R: Control 24, PT HD3 I/Os, PC (Cubase/ Nuendo) setup used mainly for audio/ video work, the drum space my brother and I share.

-Amps: Top to Bottom: Mesa Boogie Mark IV, Mesa DC-5, Diezel VH4, Mesa Tremoverb 100W

**some of these pics are somewhat old (I took some of them shortly before I started posting on Philmusic about a year or so ago) so some things have changed a bit. In addition to the Genelecs, I also have a pair of Event ASP8s sitting on the Control24 shelf now. The PC rig has since had a monitor upgrade to 2 Dell 20+"monitors, and I added a second Mackie Universal module to my existing unit in the picture. I try and stay consistent with my gear to really learn it. Most of the work I do on the side is given to me by word of mouth so the autonomy I have to accept work is a nice thing since I don't do music fulltime. I do just as much indie movie scoring work as remixes and mixing. Most of my music work in recent years has focused on production work for indie dance labels.

Where'd the Rhodes go?  :?
Title: Re: Home Studio Pics Thread
Post by: abyssinianson on January 31, 2007, 11:11:37 AM
@Kit: The rhodes is safe and sound next to a couch behind the rack:) Out of my keyboards, the rhodes is the only thing that doesn't have any sort of DAW connectivity to it so the piano mainly plays one of two roles: rehearsal/ songwriting tool (hence its location close to the couch), and recording tool. When I record the Rhodes, I usually have to break out the suitcase amp and mic it. just for you Senor Kit, i will snatch someone's camera and take some up close pics of the thing as soon as I can.  While I am at it, I will take pics of the trusty 'ol MS2000 and the Alesis Andromeda.

Have you heard? Fender is reissuing the Rhodes!

@Kit: so sorry....i thought I'd share what pics I had laying around. I didn't mean to offend :-o

I heard about the Rhodes reissue but didn't hear about the price. Imagine, the old Rhodes may be more affordable still since there are people who always seem to be selling them in different conditions. In most cases, you can get them in really good working order if you are handy with electronics and know your way in a piano. Usually, the first thing to go on the Rhodes are the hammers and the relay mechanism. I bought my parts from a local place that had spare parts from other Rhodes pianos.

@Kit: so sorry....i thought I'd share what pics I had laying around. I didn't mean to offend :-o

No offense taken. Just yankin' at 'ya! There's an Andromeda near here that's tugging at my GAS strings too!  :-D (and then, there's Lexa Doig as Andromeda, but that's another story...  )

Lexa Doig....mmmmmmm....she's no synth but I'll give her a go:) Ha! If you do get that Andromeda, it'll be a pretty good match for you. It has a lot of the Juno type sounds as well as fat synth characteristics of the JP-8000 keys except with more buttons and knobs than you can shake a stick at! No doubt, you'll be fiddling with the keyboard for a while because it is really quite flexible. Alesis did well on the RnD with this synth.

This last batch of pics shows some of my notable pieces of gear. I am not a very knowledgeable synth guy so I try and stay with specific pieces of gear to help me do my projects with as less of a learning curve as possible. From the top left, clockwise: Rhodes Seventy-Three, Alesis Andromeda, Roland TR-808, Korg MS2000R, Moog Voyager, Roland TB-303 with Devilfish mod. Out of the bunch, the Rhodes is the most temperamental but it sounds great - gritty with a ton of attitude if you play hard. I've heard people use a Leslie with it and I would love one if I could get my hands on a bargain. I still haven't completely figured out the Andromeda but the knobs and buttons are all there to keep me busy for years, I suppose.

Prospective purchases: I gotta save for these - Access Virus, Nord Lead.

Not shown: Roland A-80 (fully weighted keys MIDI controller), Korg Kontrol49, M-Audio Trigger Finger, Sherman Filterbank

You know what would be cool abyss? A panoramic shot of your studio. Hard to imagine it in bits and pieces plus the only wide angle shot you have was when you were rewiring stuff. Better yet... you should be in some of the pics! That way, if you take your vacation here, we'd know what you look like!  :-D  Kinda like what Baldo did before he came over (and he made sure he showed me 10 of his 18 guitars when we were chatting one time).

I think that is the only thing I haven't done in a while is take pictures of the guitar "family." People here in Philmusic seem to like doing that. I will get to it one of these days. I am afriad I don't have as many guitars as BALDO does...lol. If there is anything about my former GASsing that I've really, really tried to cure, it is having too many guitars. I've realized that having guitars that I don't use heavily sticking around is a shame and I've been pretty good about that the past few years.

I thought about going back home in 2007 but it'll be a bit hard because I really cant go on vacation for more than a week. I could but I've been a workaholic for so long that being away from work for a few days at a time makes me fidgety. Cιst la vie in Medicine, I guess. I haven't had a vacation since '97, I think, when I was in college. we'll see though. There is no one left in my family (or clan) left in the Phils so I really don't have a reason to go back home. Everyone is either in the US, Japan or Europe.

i imagine na masaya yan. you might be better off in a year or so kase baka lilipat ako permanently sa Northeast coast sama yung buong studio gear ko. I think out sa lahat dito, si BALDO lang ang magiging malapit sa akin kase taga NYC siya di ba? sa Cambridge, MA ako mag istar. so, kung merong bibisita sa kay BALDO, you can kill two birds with one stone then. libre ang recording :)

nagtanong si jepoy about yung scheduling sa mastering co-op. i think my schedule would be less hectic then. we'll see how things work out.

Woah, I totally drooled over your gears sir Abyss! :-D

I find your setup very interesting especially the way you'd run 2 different DAWs in it.

How would you differ your experience in PT between Cubase, though? I've worked mostly with PT since i entered SAE (and implenting MIDI in it is just so horrible, at least without implementing rewire!). I worked with Cubase SX3 for some time as well, although i haven't really gotten my hands wet with it as much as i did with PT. Anyway, one of my best instructors had told me that he doesn't perceive SX3 to sound as good as PT. How true is this? Does the algorithm behind these two DAWs heavily affect the way it 'sounds'. I am intrigued, atleast in your experience. :-)

@Mark:

In my experience, there is a huge advantage to using third party sequencers like Logic, Sonar, and Cubase in that you are free to mix and match your gear. As such, how well your gear sounds is entirely up to how much you want to invest in your setup. I started off using Cubase and Logic in the early 90s so I am a bit biased to say that I really don't see very much of a difference between all the full blown sequencers because, while Cubase/ Nuendo/ Logic has a great number of features, you trade off with latency lags since no single manufacturer makes dedicated hardware to solve the latency issue. On the other hand, PT, while the industry standard (in the US), comes very, very short of being an all-in-one setup because of the MIDI problems it frequently experiences. Between low latencies and MIDI implementation, as a user of multiple platforms, I prefer to have something that will allow me to do EVERYTHING in one setup but, alas, this is not yet fully possible.......so here I am, using PT and Cubase/Nuendo to get projects done.

Yeah, MIDI in PT has always been its weak point and I am surprised that digidesign hasn't done anything to bypass the use of Rewire into its environment and use MIDI routing like Logic, Nuendo and Cubase.

On sound, the quality of audio between PT and the other sequencers narrows down to your converter system. This is a subjective viewpoint and people might argue with me on this. The algorithms in the programs themselves do not matter as much, I think, and this seems to hold true in the comparison's i've done on my gear. For the most part, I keep pretty short signal pathways when I record and transfer data into my DAWs and I can say that I don't hear a very big difference between the competing platforms when I finally mixdown to digital media. Up until recently, I was using the built in converters in my PC DAW soundcards to transport audio. The PC converters sounded great to me. Ditto for PT. Then, I gave Apogee converters a listen after using a Rosetta 800 on a (indie score) mixing project at a friend's project studio. Though the guy's setup sounded great on an RME MADI/ AD setup, the addition of the Rosetta made his tracks wider and more multi dimensional. The resulting sound with the Rosetta wasn't necessarily better than the PT or my native PC DAW platform, it just sounded - different - and I liked it. I traded a few things in for a Rosetta 800 recently but have not had a chance to fully use it. I have an up and coming bossa nova jazz project to record my uncle's work for a CD and that will be a good environment to test the Rosetta and do a shoot out between PT, native RME converters and the RME+Rosetta 800 setup. He will be playing a digital piano and my Rhodes on several tracks.

The take home message here is the signal chain is a very important part of the DAW setup because you really do get what you put into your system; the cleaner it is, the more unadulterated the sound. I think that when people say that PT sounds better than other systems, they should specifically address PTs ability to process information as a SYSTEM and not just as a program because, this is how Digidesign mainly designed PT systems: to carry a lot of data transfers with the least amount of latency. The bad part about this situation is that the gear is proprietary. Now, PC DAW setups using Nuendo, Logic, Sonar and Cubase can get just as good quality audio, I think, if the right pieces are put together to maximize the sequencer features and the type of work that you do on the DAW. Some examples of pro sounding work done on non-PT systems include:

-Moulann's indie CD (Cubase and Logic) (tracks at: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=14420953 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=14420953))
-Uneaq (Cubase) (tracks at: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction-user.viewprofile&friendid=1028161 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction-user.viewprofile&friendid=1028161))
-Whatever project Hans Zimmer produces (Cubase and Nuendo)

Last time I checked with him, Andrew (Uneaq) was using an M-Audio Delta 44 on a Cubase setup to produce his tracks. DJs and musicians in the UK largely use Cubase and Logic systems to produce their music on a wide variety of platforms which use hardware from a varied number of manufacturers. Magazines like Future Music showcase pro setups everymonth and it is a good way to see how you can design your system by "cherry-picking" your gear.

you can do it in one of two ways: through optical ADAT or through s/pdif. Note that by passing your converters through the Apogee Rosetta you will monitoring from the Rosetta and not the RME outs anymore. Your inputs for mics, analog stuff will still be through your RME Fireface, Hazel. Also, your use of the Apogee 200 or 800 limits the number of channels you can convert. You can't use the 4 mics on the fireface and still use the 200...you will have to either use the Fireface's converters or spring for the Rosetta 800 which uses 8 channel conversion. This was the reason why I got the 800, to give myself enough room to track more than 2 tracks at a time for something like a room mice in addition to a stereo mic signal.

Abyss, with 100lb dogs, nothing would make your guitars safe from them. As for cats, you should see the cover on the Peavey speakers, the cats think its their scratching pad. hahahahaha

bugoy and edge, just looks big. I think the drum kit makes it look big. That Tama Stagestar is really a small kit.  Altho for the size of the room, it's good enough for rehearsing. The room is small enough that everytime my gf comes down when we are rehearsing (there's 4 of us), she says "this room reeks of musician's sweat." lol

BTW, I think my next addition to the studio would be a bar fridge so we don't have to go upstairs for drinks. ;)

Oh those boxes. hahaha Yeah I really should. It's been over a year now since we moved to the house and I still have boxes. Actually ang laman noong boxes are 600 LP albums, half rock. half jazz. Mostly ones I accumulated when I was in the "audiophile" phase of my life, all imported from the USA, Japan, Germany, etc. :) About 300 CDs and then the rest of the boxes contain guitar mags, (guitar world, guitar one, etc) from 1989-1998. I stopped collecting them since then.

the design of that wood poster methinks really works as a diffuser. ive seen one at shinji's studio

If it is indeed used as a diffuser, two things:
1) the diffusive elements are too thin to diffuse appreciable frequencies (the thickness should at least be 4 to 8 inches); and
2) diffusers are normally placed at the back of mix position.  You put absorption in front for better point source control, otherwise your stereo spread is all over the place.

My 2 cents.

yes sir mike... i agree it should be placed at the back. ive seen alot of studio pics with that wood frame design diffuser and its placed at the back.
btw the actual frame that i saw at shiji's studio is placed at the vocal booth at the back of where the singer tracks. :)

I am actually thinking about getting a couple of the space couplers from auralex to use in my drum space. Apparently, these artSPACE things that auralez makes are pretty good. I've seen them in a couple of studios here but i never thought much about them for my own place.

 :-) :-) :-)

Find an inexpensive shockmount that has the same diameter as the 2020 mic body. MXL makes several shockmounts that can fit round body mics. Try here (http://www.audiogear.com/MXL-Microphones.html). (http://www.audiogear.com/Resources/MXL90.jpg)

Then there is also this: Universal Mic Shockmount (http://www.shockmount.com/) which is priced at $25 I think.  (http://www.shockmount.com/img9.gif)

Lastly, there is the DIY route. Examples are here (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t133669.html) and here (http://www.wiremonkey.com/diy_shock_1.htm). These look like the Universal shockmount from the previous paragraph and they seem more tailored for thin body and shotgun mics. Might be a problem for vertically positioned, heavy body mics.

hindi naman too limited ..=)

in my case i find it very flexible.. =)
it has midi and audio recording functions

and i use it live onstage sa performance.. ganun kabilis umandar ung program..
and kapag nag aarange ka ng song.. pede ka mag palit palit ng beat patterns..basslines... gitars ekek... pag hahalo halo mo ung parts ..testing testing =)

siguro and mejo di pa ko confident eh ung mastering ... di ko pa talaga alam kung oki mag master don.. i still throw the mixdown file sa soundforge =)

eto share ko lang:

You should have upgraded to SL2 or SX2 with that OEM vst 5.1. I got my SL2 for just $199 during the Emu upgrade offer. I think you could upgrade to SL3 for $299... haven't checked the upgrade price to Cubase 4 Studio - go to steinbergupgrades.com for details.

Did a lot of work with 5.1 previously and one thing I wish they kept with SX was the separate panning for left and right channels on a stereo track.

sayang.  those emu upgrades definitely sound like a missed opportunity for me.  will do check out the steinberg website.

re: cubase 4, isn't it buggy?  or has is been sorted out already?   vaguely remember some issues in past forum topics.

One thing they hate was the removal of directx support. If you have any projects with Dx effects, you're screwed with C4. You can check out 2nd hand SX3/SL3. Unlike Sonar, Steinberg allows license transfers; but you'll have to get a new dongle for $25.
Title: Re: Home Studio Pics Thread
Post by: abyssinianson on March 14, 2007, 01:40:47 AM
It is also worth to note that you can only have ONE Steinberg dongle pero machine and will need to transfer the dongle from machine to machine if you look to use your Steiny products on more than one DAW. Cubase 4 is still buggy as far as I can tell and so are some features of the new Nuendo version. I am still sitting on the fence with my old versions of cubase SX 3 and Nuendo before thinking about upgrading. I think the DX stuff on Cubase 4 will run on a wrapper for those of you that use DX but success with the wrapper are still spotty since it is not supported by Steinberg at all. Wrapper testing is mainly done by the folks over at the Steinberg forums and some reports seem to be reporting positive results.

Cubase 5.1 will serve you well. I was a long, long time user of 5.1 before I made the huge jump to SX3. I bypassed SX1 and 2 altogether because 5.1 did basically everything I could ever need at the time. Personally, MIDI implementation is where third party sequencers leave PT in the dust. In fact, Digidesign PT users have long complained about the MIDI development lag that Digidesign doesn't seem to emphasize for its legions of user that actively use MIDI on a daily basis. I will give Digidesign this though: they have worked (a lot) on their MIDI aspect but it still isn't as versatile as Nuendo or even SX3, I feel.

Good luck with SX3, Cubase is a wonderful program that has TONS of features guaranteed to keep you busy for years.

thanks sir abyss.  come to think of it, vst 5.1's good enough for my needs.  rarely do any recordin, only when the need arises for guitar sounds in certain projects.

read on the steinberg site bout one of my fave film scorers, harry gregson-williams.  he's also been usin vst 5.1 for the longest time.  only ports to protools after he composes his score, for mixdowns.  his work on metal gear solid rocks!

guess as long it's mostly midi and loops, vst 5.1's perfect for my requirements.  it does have a very stable midi implementation which gives me more time workin and less time worryin bout crashes.

there are a lot of big name steinberg users, one of them is Hans Zimmer, the film composer who has been using Nuendo and Cubase for as long as the product has been out, I think. For the longest time I was using Cubase/ Nuendo as my main composition platform because I started learning recording on it and I just find it more intuitive than Logic. Nowadays, I use PT and Cubase/ Nuendo equally as much because a lot of people who work in studios here in the US use PT as their standard platform. To make things easier, I try and keep things simple on my end so, at least, working on their projects gives me the efficiency that I need to work on quick project turn around. Smaller project studios and DJs prefer Cubase and Logic and their liberal application of EQs and effects in those project environments helps me communicate better with them when I am able to work directly on the session files and have a duplicate of their creative process. Its all a matter of choosing what tools suit your needs and I think 5.1 would be a great fit for your creative projects.

yup! hans zimmer!  been dissectin/reverse engineerin his work.  hehe.  he's like one of the first film composers who actually made popular the use of sample synths for composing classical film music.  the new-ish breed which is worlds apart from the traditional pen-and-paper john williams mold.

thanks for the very enlightening tips.  i'll just stick with my vst 5.1 in the meantime.  besides, there's usually protools naman when i bring my stuff in.  that or straight to avid which is hellish to work with audio.

you're using Avid for audio? Avid platforms are for video post-production.

abyss,

Scores are usually tracked (here, that is) to Avid and the punch is usually done manually... live. No sync of any kind. If you are using a sequencer, no one I know of syncs it with timecode generated by the Avid system; a pity since syncing would make scoring work so much easier. In 1999, I was indirectly involved with the score tracking of Pedro Penduko (the one with Janno). A colleague would have the sequence on a MC-50 mkII and he would do on the spot fills and lengthen a section by ear, and punch in manually! They didn't do sync then, still don't do it now. <sigh>  :|

yup, for musical scorin locally, there's no midi sync involved with the avid machines.  usually i'd just import the files straight to avid, then lay it all in manually.

so my compositions'd would sometimes be based on script lang, as long as i've worked with the director before, that'll be ok.  then i'll just make lotsa loops from my score so it'd easier to work with usin avid.  i'd just cross my fingers that the hit points'd line up right.  with the extremely tight sched, i actually learned to do audio stuff in avid, however cripplin it might be.

worse is havin the producer breathe down on my back and the show's for airin within a couple of hours.  then you'd have the PAs runnin back and forth on their mobile phones doin dub-outs to dvcpro and literally runnin from the studio to the broadcast department.  it's actually quite a rush at crunchtime.  hehe.  just hope that the program manager doesn't call up to ask what the hell's goin wrong.

That must be very time consuming but a helluva way to get a sense of what Avid and Final Cut can do if you do everything in it. I have exprienced drifting audio on Avid and Final Cut Pro but usually the case is some buffer difference between the audio (usually tracked and synched with a third party program) and the video or some part of the audio file was slightly longer before it was bounced to Avid or Final Cut causing the rest of the A/V file to go bonkers over time.

Janno? As in, Janno Gibbs? Ha! I haven't heard that name in a long time. Its funny that I was just thinking about Dolphy a few days ago and asked my cousin if the old fart is still alive and womanizing..lol

Usually indicative of a sync problem. More often it's because video is usually at 29.97 fps while most DAW soft are set to 30 fps. It becomes a headache when you're scoring to a video copy of a film which usually runs at 24 fps. You hope that whoever did the film transfer to video did it right; that's why standard video pre-production copies of films should have embedded SMPTE timecode but no one seems to use it properly around here.

I'm reminded of this flash animation short I did a couple of years back. They had me record the VO for the animation while their flash guy was simultaneously creating the visuals with the limitation that it be only 30 to 45 secs long.; no picture boards timed to script and with no idea over how long the actual animation would have been. On a wing and a prayer, I flew in the VO and music clips based on gut feel (since their flash renderer didn't do realtime playback and sound clips had to be positioned by typing in time values), and nailed the position of the takes and highlight points in the first few tries. Whew!

Janno? As in, Janno Gibbs? Ha! I haven't heard that name in a long time. Its funny that I was just thinking about Dolphy a few days ago and asked my cousin if the old fart is still alive and womanizing..lol

Yeah, that Janno. Dunno about Dolphy though.  :-D

hahaha..walang anuman 'pre. yeah, dream ko nga na makakuha ng SSL AWS console at some point sa buhay ko or whatever it is na counterpart ng AWS Primacoustic Gobos from some guy for 50 bucks. Sa ngayon, I am just thankful to be able to work on an SSL, Neve, SOny Oxford or Icon every so often to have an idea of how to apply what I've learned sa loob ng full fledged na studio. For now, yung Control 24 ko is the largest console I have ever owned and it is more than enough sa personal and commission projects ko. Nowadays, I am concentrating more on gigging whether it is DJing, doing "gun-for-hire" gigs and recording other people, or playing solo acoustic gigs.

Sabi ni Kit you just added an additional Accel card. PCIe ba? Kuryoso ako if it makes a difference between PCI or PCIe. Honestly, hindi ako sure if a PCIe will be that much a difference kase PCI kasya na sa aking setup pero merong promotional price and Digidesign para trade-in for PCIe. If the difference is as noticeable as what I've seen in my UAD-1 cards from PCI to PCIe, I would go for it - if not, huwag na lang.

Title: Re: Home Studio Pics Thread
Post by: astrobog on April 11, 2007, 03:26:32 PM
Title: Re: Home Studio Pics Thread
Post by: abyssinianson on April 11, 2007, 11:49:45 PM
Yun ang sabi sa mga tao na nakagamit ng HD3 on the Digidesign forums. Sabi nila daw it isnt that big of a difference pero it was after they already upgraded thinking it would make some audible difference sa efficiency ng machine nila. Granted, this is speaking for track counts of 50 and up. My concern was plug-in efficiency and if PCIe would make my busses work better when layering effects. I didn't know what to think because Digidesign (via support email) said it would but actual users said it doesn't make a massive noticeable difference so people are better off saving their money. I have been sitting on the fence as far as upgrading my Accel cards because they do work fine for me but, like I said, the deal right now is pretty good for trade-ins so it is something to think about for the long run. It looks like I might pass on upgrading.

I hear the Mac Pro works really well sa PT - very stable. I am on a G5 and it works well for me. I was on a G4 for years and years before I got up the nerve to even check out the G5. If I do GAS up in the next few months, it'll have to be for more data storage.

kailangan ba talaga shinji eh KAHOY yung stand???  :?

Para medyo woody ang tone... :-D :-D :-D

Seriously, I've seen metal speaker stands with the pillars filled with sand to deaden resonances.

oh sure, i think sam ash even has a couple made of metal stands with a trangular base available on their site. the stands looked pretty sturdy when i saw them at the store but i wouldn't leave my monitors on them, especially with my dogs running around the studio sometimes. thankfully, yung mga pusa ko mahilig lang na mag poke around sa likuran ng mga racks and they dont go on top of anything.
