Title: Shooting in Public... (share your experiences)
Post by: gainsucker on May 31, 2010, 10:55:03 PM
there are some countries where you are not allowed to take photos in public... (Saudi, etc....)

what do you guys do? i mean, how do you handle situations especially when there is a moment worth being captured but you being seen with your long telephoto lens might stir up an argument... especially if the one you're taking photos isn't in the mood...

especially knowing that there are some laws in photography against taking photos without permission...

i remember when i was in Saudi... was into long exposure that time, and i really needed to hide, just to take a photo of a building... may kasamang kaba at suspense kase the moment the police catches you taking photos, kulong ka....

i like taking candid shots, coz' only in that way you can capture a perfect moment...

what i usually do is keep my lens in a small bag, pull it out quick once i see something interesting...

sometimes i walk with tourists, pretending that im also one, lol... so i could take all the photos i want... trigger happy

meron na ba inaway dito or dinemanda? share your stories  :-D

Parang ang hirap kasi kung magpa-paalam ka. Ang tendency is masira ang moment. Po-pose na sila. Maganda nga yung ma-capture mo yung "moment" na yun. Hindi pako nakaka-encounter ng may nang-away sakin after ko sila picturan without them knowing it.

yup...  mismo...

i like taking pictures of lovers, kids, and emotions... sa atin buhay na buhay ang photojournalism, sa dami ba naman ng subjects sa kalye...

i hope some can post here photos ng mga kuha nila sa street... yung candid lang ha  :-D

They did it corteously, so we were polite to them in return. Swerte namin halos tapos na kami magshoot. Nakakainis lang na ang daming bawal, but rules are rules.  :-)

Yeah. I respect the country too. I spent 10 years (pretty much my whole childhood) there.

Yun nga yung mahirap dun, if you take pictures of kids iba talaga iisipin nila.

just finished shooting sa book na ginawa namin for a politician, about sa different places around QC area. mahirap, nakakadisturb ang pag pic sa mga places na kahit in public e bawal kuhanan. guards usually ask for permits pag nakita ka nila.

iglesia ni cristo church sa commonwealth ave ang isa sa pinakamahirap kuhanan. pabalik balik kami dito para makakuha ng magandang angle kasi ang hirap magtago sa mga guard. e my mga guard pa sa overpass malapit dun pati barangay tanod na iglesia at tatanungin ka. pag nahuli ka nila di ka nila papaalisin hanggat di mo binubura yung mga picture na kinuha mo (unless syempre pag ok naman yung reason mo and my permit ka for taking pictures). eventually nagkaron kami ng permit from the politician, and kahit my permit na, they still dont allow na pumasok kami sa loob, sa labas lang kmi pinakuhanan. sobra higpit.

sa mga malls naman and new places like sa technohub commonwealth, (maganda dito pag gabi hehe) bawal din kumuha ng pic. kasi daw kahit na open for public yung place, private pa din daw yung may ari which is ayala lands. pero nag tip yung guard, pag may kasama daw na model o tao dun sa pic, ok na ok lang daw mag picture hehe kaya we ended up being models in our own shots. :-)

Saan ba kumukuha ng permit for taking pictures?

way back pa to, when i was starting my journey in photography. me and my bandmates went to MOA, gamit ko pa nun was a Yashica Electro 35 GSN and a Canonet QL17 and a tripod. Then i saw some photographers din dala mga DSLR nila and tripods and their backpacks, mejo umuulan nun so they have to cover yung cams nila and ako din. so yun lakad shoot lang. then i saw this part sa likod ng moa na may slide tas daming naglalarong bata sabi ko aba ok to. nilagay ko tripod ko pinatong ko yung cam, sumilip sa view finder "aba ok tong spot na to" nung pipindutin ko na may kumalabit sa balikat ko. "sabi ko huh? una sasabihin mo sakin public place to then malaki camera ko, kung public place to pasara niyo to para walang taong makapasok dito."

exactly. its like they associate dslr cams to trigger bombs or anything connected with spying.

I've been to events na sinusurrender ang mga dslr's and pinapalampas yung mga point and shoot. Which is a lot of crap. people aren't allowed to take better pictures now?

Inaassume ko nalang lagi na hindi ko alam ung mga patakaran nila and represent an innocent face at any point they police me shooting. No use arguing with guards, they're taught what to do and even when they're not best at it, they still have the last say on the implementation, so just let it be.

I got in trouble last night.

I took shots of the 7-11 store in downtown star ferry and one of the staff came out and told me off, i got angry and took a shot of her and walked off. She grabbed me and started shouting. Next thing i know the bus drivers came out for her defense then a big guy looking like a local triad thug grabbed me by the neck.

I trembled with fear inside.

Took a big gulp of beer and collected myself. I signaled the thug to let me go coz i aint runnin.
I kept it cool, ive been thru this before...they called 999, the local emergency number.
Cops came with sirens blaring....HILARIOUS.

I demanded they call an ambulance pretending i got hurt when they grabbed me.
Usual ID check  and all. They demanded me to delete the photos...all the photos i took of the shop.

I said talk to my lawyer so they just looked and the staff girl 7-11  demanded her photos be deleted.
I did coz i was tired of arguing but only her photo.

I showed her a photo of her store selling beer to underage girls and her eyes started welling up with tears.
Still the cops just ignored it, i dont know what they were talking about, maybe she just go told off.

And they let me go, i was cautious coz the local thugs might still be after me, cops are useless against them.
Lesson learned, ill stay away from the star ferry for a month or two.

@pallas: saan to bro? kakatakot... i've been taking stolen shots here sa Singapore, buti wala pa ko na encounter na ganyan, pero your situation kase is very sensitive, lalo na you can use the photos as proof para maisara yung store...

when i was in SAUDI, taking photos in public is illegal... lalo na pag kinunan mo babae, baka ikulong at i rape ka pa ng mga Arabo, and the will even break your cam...
