Double bass is more of a logistic problem because you need to lug around 2 bass drums, you need 2 sets of kick mics (and that's an extra track in the mixing board), you need to tune them as similar as possible (except when it's not same in size or if you want both drums not to sound the same), and it takes a good amount of floor space.

I haven't tried playing a double bass kit yet, but I would love to if I have the chance.  Mas solid nga daw ang feel.

I have an old Modern Drummer magazine which discussed this topic - double bass vs. double pedal.  I can't remember which issue.  If I could find that article, I'll try to post some excerpts of opinions from different drummers like Mike Portnoy, Virgil Donati, Simon Phillips, etc.

Personally, I prefer double pedals.  It's convenient, and it's what I'm already used to.  And with today's technology and design improvements, double pedals are much better nowadays.

This is for bangbus and others who want to find out how to move the Hi-hat stand closer to the left bass pedal.

I use a Pearl HA 100 Hihat to bass drum attachment

and Pearl AX 20 Dual Quick release clamp

attach the clamp on the left bass drum...ingat lang kasi nagkaka mark ang finish so if you want put a tape on the area where you want it placed.

Next you can attach the Z rod to the clamp like this

The next picture will show you what you need to attach to the Z rod and that will also serve to connect with the AX 20 dual clamp.

Post by: rexdrummer on October 08, 2006, 02:31:08 AM
The last picture shows the AX 20 clamp is attached to the Hi-hat stand, plus the other end is clamped on to the Z rod.

Just remember since you only folded the legs that will give you limited options on how to angle your Hi-hat pedal. Also make sure that the stand is balance/straight. You need to make sure you're protecting the bass hoops against too much weight.

Hi Rex, thank you so much for your prompt reply! I will go down to my local drum retailer today and get one as I badly need it to accomplish a double bass setup like your tight kit! This the last thing that I need after recently acquiring an additional left floor tom. I'll send you pix when i'm done. Once again Rex thank you for hooking me up!

Best regards to you and your family there in WI!

that is part of the drumhead> The model of the bass batter skin is EVANS EMAD (Externally Mounted Adjustable Damping). the EMAD comes with 2 variants (thin and thick) of muffling foam that you slide into a circular frame attached to the head  :P

check the signature of bangbus, may closeup snap ata also of his emad.  :P

that specific part is highly recommended to bring the hihat stand next or as close as possible to the left bass drum pedal. if you are particular like bangbus in keeping the hihat stand stable and yet close to the snare and left bass drum pedal, you will need this, otherwise you will be forced to rely on the unfolded legs of the hihat stand for stand stability which actually prevents the hihat stand from being next to the left bass drum pedal due to the limited space between the hihat stand, the 2nd bass drum and left bass drum pedal. in other words, tatama yung hihat stand legs sa left bass drum at left bass drum pedal pag unfolded yung legs.

but if you're comfortable or fine with having the hihat stand a bit away from the 2nd bass drum pedal and snare, then you don't need this.  :P

aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhh! this thing is expensive here in ripoff britain! average price for this is 37-40£ (4k pesos)! how i wish i was in the states instead where it only sets you back by $36!

£30 is the cheapest i could find and thats from an online store in Germany pa! although the store offers cheap dhl 4 to 7-day shipping to uk for only 700pesos altogether including 4 optimounts that i would be getting from em. wish me luck!

nice!

dual purpose sya for your company...its a nice display item rin! or if you wana sponsor a gig/drum eb/clinic, display mo lang to attract the young guns! it has more market recognition compared to other signature kits kasi more affordable sya, realistically priced, and the endorser is young and popular din...specially if your market is comprised of young fellas, i believe this will reinforce the pearl brand to those rockin out or even to those startin out. lalo na pag makita yan ng isang rich spoiled brat, yari si daddy for christmas! basta make sure you get the joey jordison figure stand din!

add: if you have the kit na, display mo sa mga lobby ng big malls like megamall, mall of asia etc to point the direction to perfect pitch or yupangco showroom . . . ok sya talaga for promotional purposes din!

But we can still put multiple toms on a single bass drumkit (ex. - Carter Beauford, Tim Alexander), and/or a few toms on a double bass drumkit (ex. - Vinnie Paul, Ed Shaughnessy).

Just a thought.

Practically, I'd still prefer single bass with double pedals on it.

For sure madami din interested sa double bass kit.
Many drummers are fond of expanding and upgrading their kits no matter what the price.
Just like car enthusiasts who'd invest huge amount to modify their cars.

Kaya sure hit pa din yan sirJP.  :-D

Ano ung fusion size toms?

As far as I know, ang Fusion size tom is a combination of standard jazz and rock tom configurations.
The basic rock tom configurations are 12" 13" AND 16". Jazz naman, 10" 12" and 14"
Check out Steve Smith and Dave Weckl's drumkit sa website ng Zildjian at Sabian.

To appreciate Terry Bozzio's drumkit is to watch and hear him perform on it.  Grabe talaga ang ostinato and melodic drumming explorations niya.  Tama lang na ganon ang drumkit niya, because he can pull it off and he's able to use every instrument in his monster kit in a creative and musical context.  Genius.

Post by: G_CLEFT2004 on September 16, 2007, 07:40:40 PM
Hey Bro just to talk about which will be better for you a "double bass" set up for a drum set or would you prefer a "double pedal" only??

I think Double Bass will be better.  The disadvantage is only pag may mga gigs outdoor medyo matagal set up and bulky pag travel!!

Title: Re: Double Bass vs. Double Pedal?

double bass yun.. ang saya.. iba yung feel niya at sound wise.. pareho yung tunog ng bass sa left at right.. pero what can i do? i can afford only double pedal.. sad... kung magssponsoran ako ng drum company(asa pako) e di ok! hehe..

masaya kaya magtono... fulfilling... it's one thing that all drummers must have..

Disadvantage of double pedals:

"when you hit the bass drum the head is still resonating. When you hit it in the same place right after that you kinda get a "slapback" from the bass drum head hitting the other pedal. You're not letting them breathe."

But logically, this is also the equivalent of playing single strokes on our snare drums and toms.  And for me, I think the difference in its slapbacks and breathing is just slight, meaning I don't think it's such a major dilemma.

masaya ako with my Mapex Birch M 6-pc.  I love the hardware too.  I just thought that expanding my kit would be a good idea.  Now, I think getting an extra kick and pedal would cost me just as much as a double pedal, and it would be much cheaper pa than getting a DW double or darn Axis.

I am not  a serious drummer but I do a lot of studio work.  What would be a better choice?

Siguro sir, if you're a gigging drummer, I'd recommend double peds. :-)

If not, a double bass drum setup is said to feel more natural, and it offers higher customizability with regards to sound and pedal feel.

I've also read that if you are using triggers on your kick, it would be better to do 2 separate bass drums than going the double pedal route...

May i ask some question? what is the purpose of this poll? is it for GAS related or tone... if tone pipiliin ko yung double bass dahil mas solid yung attack, tone and punch.. concentrated yung each pedal sa isang bass drumheads. hindi nya pinapatay kagad yung resonation ng bass drum. kaya sa states mas panalo sa kanila ang double bass.. But it depends on the music that you play... pero kung sa pagtitipid naman ang pipiliin ko syempre double peds nalang ako. dahil mas handy sya... saka practical.... i vote for double bass dahil sa tone ako naka base. but i dont have double bass eh... magastos... hehehehe

For me, here are the advantages of a double bass setup:

1.  If you like blasting, double bass has a better feel because you are dealing with 2 different skins for each beater.  Hence, the response is more felt with that setup.
2.  Triggers would love a double-bass setup than that of a double pedal setup.
3.  Resonance!  The room all of a sudden has richer overtones, because you hear 2 bass drums resonating instead of just one.
4.  Looks.  (Relative though.)  I guess Tommy Lee has the best 32" and 40" kicks available in double bass.

recently I've just acquired another 18x22 bass drum... setting up took a lot of energy... one thing I immediately realized is that in a double bass kit the hihat pedal is located closer to the throne, so it's impossible that the hihat pedal and the bass pedal are exactly adjacent to each other. Double Bass kit is very expensive! After buying the bass drum, I had to buy new bass drumheads... in this case I bought two Remo Encore PS heads  (un lang afford!), plus! Reso heads should also be the same... Tuning is a pain the ass... Up until now I spend time tuning both drums coz I just can't seem to get them exactly identical in tune (probably because they're different in shell material and brand, my bass drum is a Yamaha and the other one is a Gretsch). In terms of floorspace... It took up almost 5 square meters with only one floor tom. But after all that it was all cake! Felt like I had a brand new drumkit! The feel is very different from that of a double pedal.. and it's much more louder since no second beater stops the resonance of the drum. The major difference in feel is the vibration on the left foot. You won't feel that on a slave pedal. In terms of looks,  :-o wow, Everytime I look at it there's a smile on my face! :-D, guests at my house are like "wow.." all in all having a double bass kit is really great but the cost is too high, and it takes a lot of time and energy to set up. So if I have to vote between double pedal and Double bass? I go for the double pedal. That double bass kit will just be for home use! ahahaha!

double bass...

my pedals are still side by side.. hindi lang pantay... malabo talaga magpantay ung dalawa eh... I think you're talking about the Tama Iron Cobra Hihat Stand, anyways... Hihat to bass drum attachments are pretty expensive. I think the Mapex one costs P2500... so I've improvised my own using Lazer Hardware, share ko na lang po para kayo din makatipid ehehe... using a clamp and a cowbell mount... it all costs P750!!!
